Stayed in town

 I went to run early this afternoon, but rather than the drive to the park, I stayed in town.  Got in 3.3 miles.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight - for the 57th time.

Clear and cool

 This weather is clear and cool and perfect for running.  I got out to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.4 miles on the roads.

Another 3.7

 I ran the same 3.7-mile distance at the park this evening, except this time most of it on the trails.

After the rain

 It rained off and on most of the day.  It stopped late this afternoon and I went to the park and ran 3.7 miles, all on the roads.

Texas 10 Series Katy 5-Miler

 I got up very early this morning and drove down to Katy in the rain to run the Texas 10 Series 5-Miler.  The rain stopped shortly before arriving at the race.  With the temperature in the 70's, it was very humid.  The course is all concrete streets and about as flat as possible.   I finished in 1:29:46, a couple minutes slower than my last Texas 10 Series 5-Miler in Cypress.  In any case, I finished 2nd of 2 in the 70 and over age group.  Also won $50 in the cash drawing after the race.

Back Pew 5K

 I ran the Back Pew 5K in Porter this morning and finished in 52:37.  I was first of one in the 80 and over age group.

All trails

 With two races this  weekend, I ran 3.2 easy miles on the trails at the park early this afternoon.

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight.  Nice cool and clear weather.

1,000 miles for 2024

 I ran 4.1 miles on the trails at the state park this afternoon,  That puts me over 1,000 miles for 2024.

Group night at the park

 As usual for Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park this evening.  I ran 3.7 miles, mostly on the trails.

Could not get to the park

 I headed for the park this afternoon to run trails.  Due to a bad wreck on I-45,  traffic on I-45 and the service road was at a standstill.   So, I managed to do a U turn and head back into town.  Got in 3.6 miles on the roads.

Late run

 I got up early this morning and drove down to The Woodlands for my grandson's football game at 9 a.m.  Then, back to Huntsville for a family gathering for a few hours.  Then, to church this evening.  Finally went to run about 8 pm.  Ran 3.5 miles in the old mall parking lot (5 times around the perimeter).  Today marked 3.5 years on my current running streak.

CPT Rowdy Inman 5K

 I ran the non-competitive CPT Rowdy Inman 5K on the SHSU campus this morning, put on by ROTC.  I finished the very hilly course in 53:30.  In fact, the only flat part of the course was the loop around the track at Bower's Stadium.

100 days

 I am a couple days away from reaching 3.5 years on my current streak.  However, with 3.2 miles on the trails at the state park this afternoon, I reached 100 straight days of running at least 3.1 miles every day (3.4-mile average).

Fass Brewery 5K

 After missing the run last Thursday, I went down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.

Started on the trails

 I started my run at the state park this afternoon on the trails, then switched to the roads after 2 miles.  Ended up with 4.2 miles total.

 Nice cooler and drier weather this evening.  Got in 4 miles on the roads at the park.

Wet run at the park

 There was scattered rain in the area all day.  I had to run an errand in Conroe this morning and then my last physical therapy appointment in Huntsville this afternoon.  I finally got out to the park to run.  I ran 3.7 miles, mostly on the trails and mostly in the rain.

Sunday Night 5K

 On the way down to The Woodlands this evening to run the Sunday Night 5K,  I encountered a heavy rainstorm and two wrecks on I-45.  I still managed to get to the race on time and there was no rain during the race.  I finished in 50:20, a minute or so faster than last month.

Alex's 5K

 

I ran Alex's 5K in south Houston  this morning and finished in 52:00.  I was 3rd of 4 in the 80 and over age group.  I have not run this race in a few years, but it was a good chance to visit with a lot of good running friends.

Park roads

 I was tempted to run trails at the park this morning, but with a couple inches of stitches in my neck, I decided to stay on the roads.  Ran 3.2 miles.

No Fass tonight

 I normally run the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe every Thursday night.  However, I had surgery to remove a spot on my neck late this afternoon in Conroe.  With very welcome storms in the area and maybe storms in Conroe tonight, I ran 3.4 miles in Huntsville late this morning.  The surgery went fine and I got back to Huntsville when it almost time to go back to Conroe to run.  So, I decided to stay with the 3.4 miles.  That gives me 112.9 miles for the month of October and 957.6 for the year.

It was suppose to rain

 After over a month without a drop of rain, the forecast was for rain today.  There were a few sprinkles here and there.  I ran 3.5 miles at the park, mostly on the very non-muddy trails.

Group evening at the park

 As usual for Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park this evening.  I ran 3.5 miles on the roads.

Stayed on the roads

 After 5 miles of trying to avoid tripping on the roots on the trails yesterday, I stayed on the roads at the state park this afternoon.  Got in 3.5 miles, which puts me over 100 miles for the month.

Sunday longer run

 I went out to the park this afternoon and ran 5 miles on the trails, some of which have been newly reopened.  It was nearly 90 degrees and I got bit by a horse fly.  Can't believe those things are still out in late October.

Bull Dog Dash 5K

 I got up early this morning and made the foggy drive to the town of Iola to run the Bull Dog Dash 5K.  I ran this race once before, back in 2018.  I finished in 51:11.  They did not have age group competition, but I would have been first in the 70 and over age group.

Friday trails

 I ran 3.2 miles on the trails at the park early this afternoon.  The sand is getting so deep;  we need some rain bad.

 Nice clear night for running the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe, but we can sure use some rain.

Voted

 While it has nothing to do with running, I voted today.  I was surprised about how quick the process was.  No waiting line.  On the way back to my truck, I ran into Katy, an old running buddy I have not seen in years.  We had a nice visit.  Later, this afternoon, I went to the park and ran 4 miles, mostly on the roads.

Tuesday at the park

 I got in 3.3 miles at the park this evening, mostly on the roads.

Annual physical

 I had my annual physical this morning and got my flu shot.  Discussed my 7 surgeries in 2024 with the doctor.  I went from there to my physical therapy appointment, then to Iron Works and then to the state park for a 3.6-mile run, mostly on the trails.  I was running through a deep sand area (no rain in weeks) and tripped over a stump hidden in the sand.  Hard fall and got dirty.

Late Sunday run

 With church, visiting family and some yardwork, I did not get around to running until late this afternoon.  Rather than driving to the park, I ran 3.4 miles in town.

Missed our club run

 I missed our club run in my own sub-division this morning.  However, I got up early and put out all the signs and course markings.  Then, I left for Humble for my grandson's football game.  After the game and lunch with family down that way, I drove back to Huntsville and then to the state park.  I ran 4.1 miles, about half on the trails and half on the roads.

Friday at the park

 I ran 3.6 miles at the park early this afternoon, mostly on the trails.  I see a notice on FB later today that they re-opened some more trails.  That will give me more options.

 Nice cool clear night for running the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe.

34 degrees cooler

 I did not realize that there was going to be a change in the weather overnight.  It was cold this morning.  I went to the park at noon today when it was 62 degrees and ran 4.2 miles on the trails.

96 in mid-October

 It was 96 degrees this mid-October when I went out to the park to run late this afternoon.  Thanks goodness the humidity is low.  Got in 3.4 miles, mostly on the roads.

Therapy, gym and run

 I had an hour-long therapy appointment late this morning and then went straight to Iron Works for some lifting.  I took a break and then went to the park and ran 3.3 miles, mostly on the trails.

Crowded park

 I had to wait in line for a while to get into the park this afternoon and there were a lot of people on the trail.  Nice weather, too.  Got in 4 miles, all on the trails.

Friday and Saturday

 I ran 3.4 miles in town yesterday (Friday) before driving up to Melissa (way north of Dallas) for my granddaughter's Taekwondo black belt ceremony last night and her Mother's brown belt ceremony this morning.  Before driving back to Huntsville tonight, I ran 3.4 miles on the concrete trails at a park in Plano.

As usual for Thursday, I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight.  With a 7 p.m. and a change in daylight hours, it is now starts after dark.

Half and half

 I ran 3.2 miles at the park this evening, half on the trails and half on the roads.

Snake number 1

 It is a little late in the season to be reporting my first snake encounter at the state park.  I ran 3.2 miles on the roads and met up with a small copperhead.  They are easy to see on the road; not so much on the trails.

 After exercising an hour at my rehab appointment this afternoon, walking over a mile with an engineer wheel to finish up measuring a new race course, I went to the park and ran 3.5 miles on the roads.

Texas 10 Series Cypress 5-Miler and Sunday Night 5K

 Another long day.  I got very early this morning and drove down to Cypress to run the Texas 10 Series Cypress 5-Mile race.  After a mile or so, I felt pretty comfortable.  My miles were all about the same.  I finished in 1:27:20.  Slow, but faster than I expected with the back problem.  I was 3rd of 3 in the 70 and over age group.  I got back to Huntsville in time to attend the Spanish Mass at church.  Then, I took a nap and then drove down to The Woodlands to run the Sunday Night 5K.  I finished in 52:45, my fastest 5K in several months.

Spindle Tree Park Run 5K

 I got up early this morning for the drive down to Magnolia to run the Spindle Tree Park Run 5K.  Nice clear weather.  I finished in 55:56.  Later today, I drove up to Tyler for a family get-together and drove b ack to Huntsville tonight.

Resting up for a busy weekend

 With a busy weekend coming up, including a football game tonight, I went to the park this afternoon and ran 3.3 miles on the trails.

Fass Brewery 5K

I ran the Fass Brewery 5K tonight in Conroe.   With a 7 pm start and the sun setting a few minutes after 7, it is pretty much a night run.

In town

 I mowed and trimmed the yard this afternoon, so it was fairly late before I had a chance to run.  Stayed in town and ran 3.5 miles.

As usual for Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park tonight.  I ran 3.7 miles, mostly on the trails.

Wrapping up September

 I ran 4.1 miles in town this evening.  This barely put me over 100 miles for September  with 100.1.  That's 844.7 for the year, way behind last year.  However, it is two straight months of at least 3.1 miles every day.  I had my 3rd rehab appointment for my back this afternoon.  So far, no magic.

Sunday afternoon at the park

 The weather has been slightly cooler the last few days and I did not encounter any biting horseflies at the state park this afternoon.  Got in 3.5 miles on the trails.

Running Towards Conservation 5K

 I ran a new 5K in Lufkin this morning, the Running Towards Conservation 5K at the Lufkin Zoo.  I have run other races at the zoo, but it has been a few years ago.  I did not realize that the "race" was not timed, but I finished in 59:14, according to my GPS.  The course, which was about half trails, was spot on 3.1 miles.  They had about 50 runners, a nice T-shirt, race packet, finisher medal and plenty of refreshments.  I think I would have won a 70 and over age group.

Park was probably closed

 I read on the news this morning that there was a police chase that ended up at Huntsville State Park early this morning.  They caught one guy and the other ran into the woods.  I presumed that the park was probably closed due to a police search.  The guy would probably surrender after being attacked by biting horse flies.  In any case, I ran 3.1 miles in town today.

50th Fass Brewery 5K

 I drove down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K for the 50th time.

3.6 in town

 I had a long list of errands today and finally got to run this evening.  Rather than driving to the park, I ran 3.6 miles in town.

Split run

 I went to the park early this afternoon and started running roads.  I did not feel well and quit after 2.2 miles.  Later this evening, I went to the old mall parking lot and ran another 1.4 miles.  Total 3.6 for the day.

Two appointments today

 I had an appointment with my cardiologist this morning to review the results of the ultrasound check of the veins in both legs a couple weeks ago.  The 4 surgeries in 2024 to remove bad veins were successful and I am good to go.  That means no more bothersome compression socks.  The second appointment was the first appointment with the physical therapy clinic regarding my back pain.  If left there without a lot of confidence that the back pain issue will be resolved.  Maybe I am wrong.  After all that, I mowed the yard and then went into town and ran 3.6 miles.

 Back to the park this Sunday afternoon.  Got in 3.5 miles, mostly on the trails.

Woodforest 5K

 I woke up this morning sneezing and had allergy symptoms all day.  I drove down to Conroe this morning and ran the Woodforest 5K.  It was hot and humid and I felt lousy.  Even got dizzy after the race.  I finished in 58:52 and was 4th of 4 in the 70 and over age group.  The good part was that I got to visit with a lot of good friends.

Noon run

 It was hot and sunny, but I ran 3.2 miles in town at noon today.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening, the last part in the dark.  Guess it's getting to be that time of year. 

Stayed away from the park

 I did a lot of yard work today (cut left hand, sprained right pinkie, cactus thorns in both hands and a sore back) and ended up running in town this evening, rather than driving to the park.  Got in 3.6 miles.

I was warned

 Just as soon as I parked my truck at the state park this evening, a huge black biting horse fly landed on my window.  Those things are normally gone by the end of July.  I put on extra repellant and wore a cap (keeps them off the head and gives you a weapon to swat them with).  I ran 3.3 miles, mostly on the trails.  They were all over the place, but I did not get bit.

Got up to 4

 I ran 4 miles in town this evening.  After all the back issues since January and the sprained ankle a couple weeks ago, this is the first time I ran 4 miles in several months.  The back pain will continue for a while (first physical therapy appointment is next Monday), but at least the ankle sprain is nearly healed.

Missed the storm

 I went to the park late this afternoon and ran 3.5 miles, all on the trails.  During the last mile, I could hear the storm approaching.  I managed to finish before it hit, but drove home in heavy rain.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I got early this morning and drove down to Magnolia to run the Spindle Tree 5K Trail Run.  Finished in 56:29.

Trip to Tyler

 I made a trip to and from Tyler today, so I did not get to run until later.  I went into town and ran 3.2 miles.

Fass Brewery 5K

 As usual for Thursday, I went down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.  The crowd there seems to grow each week.

Followup appointment on my back surgery

  I had an appointment today with the doctor who did my back surgery on July 22.  Obviously, the pain has not gone away, even though I am not getting the sharp pains.  More surgery would be more invasive and would break my running streak.  So, he referred me to physical therapy.  Hopefully, that will help.  Maybe they can fix my sprained ankle, too.  I need to get back to my normal slow running.  I am tired of walkers passing me.  In the meantime, I ran 3.5 miles in town this evening.

Forced onto the trails

 I met up with the group at the park this evening, as usual for Tuesday.  I started running on the roads, but got unmercifully attacked by biting horse flies.  They are usually out only during May, June and July.  After being bit 8 or 10 times in just over a mile, I got on the trails to finish 3.3 miles.

Ran in town

 I planned to run at the park this evening, but I-45 was a big mess due to a bad accident on the north side of Huntsville.  So, I ran in town.  Got in 3.6 miles.

Sunday at the park

 I made it out to the park this evening and ran 3.2 miles on the park roads.  With my ankle still hurting, I'll probably stay off the trails for a while.

Tunnel to Towers 5K

 I ran the Tunnel to Towers 5K in Cypress this morning.  Finished in 56:34 (48:00 last year).  This was my 40th race in 2024 (54 at this point last year).

Noon run in town

 I ran 3.1 miles in town at noon today, enjoying a little cooler weather.

Rainy Fass Brewery 5K

 As usual for Thursday, I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight - the whole distance in a light rain.

Trip to Tyler

 I made the 2 1/2-hour drive to Tyler this morning.  Had lunch at my nephew and his wife's New York style pizza place, visited family for an hour and then drove back to Huntsville.  Then, I mowed the lawn and went into town and ran 3.6 miles.

Met up with the group

 I met up with the group (only me and Jason) at the park this evening.  I ran 3.2 miles on the roads.

Labor Day 5K

 I ran our club's annual Labor Day 5K in the very hilly Spring Lake Sub-division.  My ankle bothered me a lot, especially on the steep downhills.  I finished in a slow 1:02:17.

Sunday Night 5K

 I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands this evening.  Finished in 56:07, four seconds faster than last month.  I guess that back surgery is helping.  My ankle was sore, but tolerable.

Wrapping up August

 Late this morning, I ran 3.1 miles at the state park, mostly on newly re-opened trails.  I must have mildly sprained my right ankle coping with all the roots on the trail, so I finished on the roads.  The ankle is sore tonight, but I am sure it will be okay tomorrow.  Being Labor Day weekend, the park was crowded for a change.  For the month of August, I ran 100.04 miles (average 3.2 per day), but at least 3.1 per day.  I still have back pain, but, obviously, it is not as bad as June and July.  My back surgery was on July 22.  Hopefully, my back will gradually get better and I can improve my running speed.  I am scheduled to see the doc for a follow-up on September 11.

 As usual for most Thursday evenings, I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe.

Busy day

 I had a busy day, including spending over an hour dealing with the incompetent (or untrained) people at Home Depot, a trip to Conroe and mowing the lawn, but made it into town to run late this evening.  Got in 3.5 miles.

More rain

 Nice much needed heavy rain this afternoon.  It stopped in time for the group to meet at the park, though.  I stayed on the park roads and got in 3.3 miles.

Finally a little rain

 After weeks of zero rain, we had a little rain in and around Huntsville this afternoon, which cooled things off a bit.  I ran 3.8 miles on the roads at the state park this evening.  It was 80 degrees when I finished.

Late Sunday morning run

 I had to go out of town early this afternoon, so I ran 3.1 miles in town.  Hot, as expected in late August.

Spindle Tree 5K

 I got up early this morning and drove down to Magnolia and ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run at 7:30 a.m.  Finished in 57:30.

 I ran 3.1 miles at the state park this afternoon, mostly on the trails.

All roads again

 I went to the state park late this evening and ran 3.6 miles on the roads, mostly through the nearly empty camping areas.

101 degrees

 It was 101 degrees when I finished running at the state park this evening.  Got in 3.3 miles on the roads.

Walk and run

 I went out in my sub-division in the mid-afternoon when it was about 100 degrees and walked with an engineer wheel for 2 miles to measure a part of a new race course for our running club.  Got it done, but still have another section to do.  Then, I went to the park and ran 3.1 miles on the park roads.

Sunday afternoon at the park

 I ran at the state park late this afternoon.  For a Sunday afternoon, the park was almost empty.  I did not see anyone on the trails and there were very few campers.  I ran 3.6 miles on the trails and roads.

Heat Wave 5K

 I ran our club's Heat Wave 5K this morning at the Waterwood Sub-division, about 15 miles east of Huntsville.  Nice course, but hilly and hot.  I finished in 58:15.

 I went to the state park early this afternoon when it was good and hot.  I planned to run the roads, but got on the rough trails.  I ran 3.2 miles.

Fleet Feet Run

The Fass Run Club of Conroe ran in The Woodlands this evening, along with the regulars at the Fleet Feet store Thursday run.  I ran 3.1 miles, most of it in heavy rain.  About 2 miles into the run, the lightning got so bad that I took shelter for about 10 minutes.  

Back to the park

 I waited until late this evening when it was a little cooler (less hot, anyway) and went to the park to run.  Got in 3.3 miles on the park roads.

 I met up with the group at the state park this evening and ran 3.2 miles on the roads.

Another 3.5

 I went out to the nearly empty state park this evening and ran 3.5 miles on the park roads.

Millican, but not to run

 I went over to Millican late this morning to attend the Millican Summer Series post-party.  Good BBQ and a good visit with runner friends.  I thought about running, but it was so hot.  I ran in Huntsville late this evening.  Got in 3.5 miles.

Southern Star Brewery 5K

 For the 10th straight year, I ran the 10th Annual Southern Star Brewery 5K in Conroe this morning.  I finished in 54:34 and was 2nd of 2 in the 80 and over age group.  Got to visit with a lot of good friends.

Unplanned trail course

 I went out to the state park early this afternoon and ran an unplanned course on the newly opened trails.  Came out to be 3.1 miles.  I have now run all the open trails.  The summer rain storm and hurricane caused some serious damage.  In several places, the damage was so bad that they had to re-route the trail.

Millican Summer Series Race Number 6

 After missing 3 races, I made it over to Millican this evening for the 6th and last of the Millican Summer Series 5K (actually 3.2 miles) Trail Run.  At least the course was dry, with no water crossings.  I took a couple light falls on the trails and finished in 1:09:30, about 3 minutes faster than my last run there.

Mostly park roads

 I trimmed some trees in my yard today and hauled a load to the city dump.  After some rest, I went to the park and ran 3.3 miles, mostly on the park roads.

Trails open again

 They opened about 3.5 miles of trails at Huntsville State Park this week.  I met up with the group at the park this evening.  I ran 1.9 miles on the trails and then 1.3 on the roads, for a total of 3.2 miles.  Just as I finished, I remembered that I was suppose to do a short run today because of the leg surgery yesterday.  In any case, I survived.  While much work has been done to open  the trails, they are much tougher than before.  Exposed roots everywhere and lots of mud on the segment along the lake.  The long bridges at the end of the lake, which I ran across when doing those 4-miles runs and runs around the lake, are wiped out.  It will be months before they are rebuilt.

Leg surgery today

 I got up early and ran 3.1 miles in town before going to the doc for my 4th and last leg surgery.  This time, they neutralized a vein in my left leg.  If all goes well, I should be able to get out of compression socks in a couple weeks.

 I went down to The Woodlands this evening and ran the Sunday Night 5K.  Finished in 56:11.

Change of plans

 I got up early this morning to drive down to Magnolia to run the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run at 7:30.  However, there was a bad wreck on I-45 and I was at a standstill for an hour.  By the time traffic was moving again, it was too late for the race.  I made a U-turn and headed back to Huntsville.  After taking a nap, I went to the park and ran 3.1 miles on the roads.

Double run

 I went into town early this afternoon to run.  My back was hurting and I stopped at 1.2 miles.  After going home and doing yard work and taking some Ibuprofen, I felt better this evening.  So, I went back into town and ran another 2.2 miles.  Total 3.3 for the day.

 I went down to Conroe this evening and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.  My first 5K distance in a while.

End of the month

 On this last day of the month, I ran 2.4 miles in town.  That gives me 50.2 miles for the month and 644.2 for the year.  At this time last year, I was at 774.5 miles.

Cleared by the doc

 I had a surgery follow-up appointment with the doctor this morning.  My bandages were removed and I was told that I have no more restrictions.  I know that I am not fully recovered, but I did meet up with the group at the park this evening and run 2.5 miles on the roads.

Monday run

 I did a lot of yard work this afternoon and then went into town and ran 1.2 miles.

Got up to 2

 I went to the park this afternoon and ran 2 miles on the roads.  No sharp back pain, it is just taking time to get my strength back.

Mid-afternoon run

 I went into town this afternoon and ran 1.4 miles on the roads.

Park open again

 Huntsville State Park is open again, even though the trails are all closed.  I went there this afternoon and ran 1.3 miles on the roads.

Fass brewery run

 I went down to the Fass Brewery Run in Conroe tonight and ran 1.5 miles.

No strenuous exercise

 My post surgery instructions says no strenuous exercise for 2 weeks.  After I explained streaking when he scheduled the surgery, my doctor told that I could run an easy mile for a few days after the surgery.  So, this evening, I ran 1.2 miles in town, after mowing the back yard (riding lawn mower).

Easy mile tonight to keep the streak alive

 After pretty much laying around all day, I went to the old mall parking lot late tonight and ran an easy mile.  The hard part was general fatigue, not so much the back.

Surgery done

 I ran a mile at the old mall at midnight this morning.  I went to a surgery center in Conroe early this morning for the long-waited back surgery.  The surgeon went in from 2 holes in the back and removed part of the ligaments around the bulging disc.  This is suppose to permanently remove the pressure and pain.  Hopefully, it will.  The surgeon spent a lot of time in the prep room explaining everything to me and my family members.  Then, he held my hand and asked if he could say a prayer with me.  That was appreciated, but inn all my surgeries over the years, it was a first.  I have to take it real easy for a few days.

 I went into town this afternoon and ran 1.2 miles.  Surgery tomorrow.

Dog Days 1-Mile

 I ran our club's Dog Days 1-Mile Race this morning at the Elkins Lake Sub-division and finished in 18:46.  It was the first 1-mile race I ran since 2020.  I did add another .2 miles to the run for a total of 1.2.  I started to run the hilly 5K course, but I may have messed up my back even more.  So looking forward to surgery Monday morning and hope I can get back to normal soon afterwards. 

Park is still closed

 The state park is still closed due to hurricane damage..  I am starting to get use to running in town.  My back is no better, so I ran 1.2 miles in town this afternoon. 

Fass Brewery run

 I met up with the group at the Fass Brewery this evening and ran 2 miles.

More distance

 I went into town this evening and ran 2.3 miles.

Better

 I felt a little better today and ran 1.7 miles in town.  Just do not want to come down with something that will delay my surgery next Monday.

Surgery a week from today

 My back surgery is scheduled a week from today.  Last month, it was cancelled after I came down with a sinus infection the week before.  Now, today, I felt lousy, besides the back.  I got in 1 mile in town this evening and it was not fun.

Late run at the old mall

 It was after 8 tonight before I got a chance to run.  Went to the old mall parking lot and ran 1.4 miles.

Too much yard work

 I spent much of the day doing yard work and did not get around to running until late this evening. Got in 1.2 miles in town.

Another short run

 Did some back jarring yardwork for a few hours today and then a 1.2-mile run in town this afternoon.  I am getting behind on my distance and races.  My back surgery is a week from this coming Monday and I have high hopes that it will resolve the problem.

Fass Brewery Run

 I was signed up for Millican this evening, but I did not think my back was up to a very technical trail run.  So, I went down to the the Fass Brewery in Conroe and ran 1.8 miles.

$100 run

 I did some heavy yardwork this afternoon and did not feel well for my run this evening.  I went into town and ran just 1.2 miles.  Just as I was finishing, I found a $100 bill folded up in the street.

Clear day

 Nice sunny day today, but the state park is closed again due to the hurricane yesterday.  I went in to town this evening and ran 2 miles.

Hurricane day

 Hurricane Beryl came through Texas today.  In fact, the eye passed over Huntsville this afternoon.  I was scheduled for leg surgery in Tomball this afternoon, but could not reach anyone to confirm that it was still on.   I presume that they had no power and that my appointment was cancelled.  I finally got around to running in town late this evening.  My back limited me to 1.5 miles.

Sunday Night 5K (150th)

 I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands this evening - for the 150th time.  It was also my 1,400th race.  I finished in 58:01.  We had a light rain for most of the race.  The rain was from the outer band of Hurricane Beryl, headed for Huntsville tomorrow.

Park roads

 I went out to the crowded 4th of July weekend state park this afternoon.  The back limited me to 1.3 miles on the park roads.

2 in town

 Being a hot summer day, I waited until late this evening and then ran 2 miles in town.

Stu's Country Mile 5K

 I ran Stu's Country Mile 5K in Centerville this morning - for the 28th straight year.  Another tough 5K with the back pain.  The results have not been posted, but I believe my time was around 57 minutes.  In any case, I was 3rd of 3 in the 70 and over age group.

Another short run

 I went into town this afternoon and ran 1.2 miles.

Back limitations

 I went to the park this evening and was able to squeeze in a 1.2 mile run, mostly on a relatively smooth trail.

Park run

 I went to the park this evening and ran 1.9 miles on the roads.  This is my 5,555th post on this blog.

Wrapping up the month

 I ran 1.6 miles in town this evening.  This gives me a total 67.5 miles for the month of June.  This was my 3rd month in a row with less than 100 miles.  I have 3 weeks until back surgery.  Hopefully, after that, I can get back to normal soon.

Getting behind

 I ran another 1.4 miles in town this evening.  With these short distances and fewer races, I am getting behind my normal pace.

Friday in town

 I ran 1.4 miles in town this evening.  I feel much better as far as the sinus infection goes, but no improvement in the back.

Missed Millican

 I missed Race 3 of the Millican Summer Series tonight.  This is my 4th straight year for the 6-race series and this was my first miss.  With the sharp pains in my back, I just thought that the technical trails would be too risky.  I managed more movement around the house today and got in a 1.2-mile run in town this evening.

Tried to do nothing today

 My goal today was to do nothing that would cause the intense pain in my back.  It usually is cause when I sit down and get up from a chair or in and out of my truck.  I am trying the learn the precise movement to avoid the pain.  Was almost successful today.  I had a meeting in town this evening and ran 1.2 miles afterwards.

Park with the group

 I stayed in bed most of the day.  Thankfully, my coughing lessened.  I met up with the group at the park this evening.  It has been a long time with the park closed for over a month.  They have even re-opened some trails.  I had misplaced by GPS, so I ran 25 minutes on the roads and trails, being very careful not to fall and mess up my back even more.

Trying to keep the streak alive

 While I have not had a fever from the sinus infection since last week, I feel lousy and the coughing never seems to stop.  Today was the day I was suppose to have surgery on my but was cancelled because of the sinus infection.  The bulging disc pain in my back has become more acute.  I have to move very carefully, especially getting up and down from a chair or in and out of my truck.  The back surgery is now scheduled for July 22.  In the meantime, I had an appointment with the cardiologist today,  It was suppose to be clearance to quit wearing compressions socks after 3 surgeries to neutralize veins in my legs.  Now, he wants to do one more.  I'm not sure what direction I am going with my back for the next few weeks,  but I am trying to take one day at a time.  I went over to the track at 9:30 tonight and ran 1 mile.

Late evening run

 I really felt lousy today, plus an errant to run in New Waverly and help my son from Houston work on my lawn mower.  I think I worsened by back yesterday when it broke down and I pushed and pulled it to the garage.  Anyway, the mower is now like my back and I have to find a part for it.  It was after 7 tonight I went to the old mall and ran 2 loops for a total of 1.4 miles.

Polish Pickle 5K

 For the 28th straight year, I drove up to Bremond this morning and ran the Polish Pickle 5K.  I did not feel too bad, except for the back issue, and finished in 55:00.  I was 3rd of 3 in the 80 and over age group.  The overall winner ran it in 15:03.  He was probably having a beer at the finish line before I got to the 1-mile marker.

Stayed in bed until 4 pm

 My temperature was up to 102 today and I stayed in bed until 4 pm.  It got down to 99 something later this afternoon and I went into town and ran 1.2 miles.

Sinus infection

  I finally got in to see my regular doctor this afternoon. He ruled out COVID and Flu and decided that I have a sinus infection.  He gave me antibiotics, steroids (start tomorrow) and a pill for coughing.  I took 2 doses of the antibiotic and I still have high temp late at night.  I went over to the track at 9:30 tonight and ran 1 mile.  I must have  looked drunk.  I was all over the track and nauseated.  The hard part is that I had to reschedule my back surgery from June 24 to July 22.

Fever

 I developed a fever today, which I suspect is a sinus infection.  I felt lousy, but I went to the park this evening and ran 1.1 miles on the roads.  Hopefully, I can get in to see my regular doctor tomorrow.  My big concern is the possible delay of my back surgery, which is scheduled for Monday.

Another short run

 My allergy symptoms and back issues were not any better today.  I am trying to avoid a sinus infection, which might delay my back surgery which is scheduled for Monday, June 24.  I went over to the old mall parking lot late this evening and ran 1.4 miles.

Park unexpectedly closed

 I spent much of the day in bed trying to beat the allergy symptoms, but went to the park late this evening.  When I drove in, the gate was closed with a nearby sign saying the park was closed today and tomorrow.  So, I went into town and started running.  Due to back pain, I opted to stop at 1.9 miles.

Woke up with full range of allergy symptoms

 I woke up this morning with a full range of allergy symptoms.  After church, I spent most of the day visiting family, taking some over the counter medication and napping.  I went to the park late this evening and ran 1.3 miles without much discomfort.

No Label Brewery 5K

 I "ran" the No Label Brewery 5K in Katy this morning.  I finished in 644th place out of 644 runners, with a time of 1:13:22.  At the start of the race, I felt totally unstable because of my back.  After 1 mile of running, I had to start walking (my first time walking at all in 852 5K's).  I walked the rest of the way to the finish and even had to stop several times to stretch my back.  My niece, Amie, joined me early in the race and stayed with me the entire time.  Thanks, Amie.  There were only 2 in the race over 80, so I was awarded a beer can lid medal for 2nd place.  On the positive side, I got to visit with a lot of good Houston friends before and after the race and safely drive the Katy Freeway, which is the widest highway in the world (26 lanes).

Split run

 I went out to the park early this afternoon and started running the roads.  Due to my back and sore leg from the surgery on Tuesday, I quit after 2.2 miles.  This evening, I went into town and ran another miles on the roads.  Total 3.2 for the day.

Millican Summer Series Race 2

 Was not sure whether I would be able to run technical trails after the surgery on Tuesday, but after running 3.1 yesterday on the park roads, I gave it a go at Millican tonight.  No rain, lightning, water-covered trails and mud tonight.  No falls, but with the sore leg and back issue, I ran slow and finished the 3.2 miles in 1:12:25.  I almost stepped on a Copperhead in a grassy area about 2/10ths of a mile from the finish.  In all my races on the trails at Millican, it was the first time I have seen a snake.

Finally back to the park

 The state park re-opened yesterday after so much storm damage.  The trails are still closed.  I waited until about 5 this evening to run.  My leg was still very sore from the surgery yesterday, but they said I could return to normal activity after 24 hours.  Before I could start running, the superintendent stopped by for a visit and update on the park.  After a mile of running, a lady stopped me to ask why the trails were closed and to tell me that she had the same race T-shirt I was wearing (2014 Texas 10 Plano).  Then, later in the run, I met a couple old friends from Huntsville who were hiking the roads.  We had a nice visit.  I finished up on the park roads with a total of 3.1 miles.

Last leg surgery done

 I ran 1.4 miles at the old mall parking lost at midnight this morning.  After a few hours sleep, I got up and drove down to Tomball for the 3rd and final surgery to neutralize bad veins in my legs.  This one was more painful than the other two.  After 24 hours, I can resume normal activity.  So, tomorrow, I am heading for the newly re-opened Huntsville State Park.

Noon run

 I went into town at noon today and ran 3.1 miles on the roads and sidewalks.

Late Sunday run

 I had a busy day and did not get around to running until about 7 this evening.  I went into town and ran 3.6 miles on the roads and side walks.

Greyhound 5K, Kosse

 For the 12th time over the years, I ran the Greyhound 5K in Kosse this morning.  The country road we run on keeps getting worse every year.  There is a trip hazard every step.  However, I ran extra slow and managed not to trip and fall.  My back definitely needs the surgery scheduled on June 24.  I finished in a slow 1:00:11 and was 2nd of 2 in the 80 and over age group.  My good Marine friend, Dennis, just turned 80, so we are competitors again.

3.1 in town

 Early this afternoon, I ran 3.1 miles on the sidewalks and roads in town.  

Fass Brewery 5K

 I went down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K for the 40th time.

Global Running Day

 Today was Global Running Day.  As I have done for many years, I went down to The Woodlands waterway and joined The Woodlands Marathon group (two other groups were also running the waterway).  I ran 3.5 miles, with several stops to visit with friends.

Park re--opening date moved again

 The state park re-opening date has been moved to June 12.  I feel guilty that I have not volunteered to help with the cleanup work at the park, but with my back issue, I would not be much help.  I did go to the hospital today for some pre-op testing, followed by yard work and a 3.1-mile run in town.

Two surgeries scheduled this month

 On June 11, I am scheduled for the 3rd and final surgery to neutralize a vein in my leg.  I kept my streak alive through the first two surgeries, so I am confident that I can get through the third.  The two injections in my back for the bulging disc have not helped much.  So, on June 24, they are going in and remove some ligament around the spinal cord.  The nurse said that I would have to rest for a week.  I explained to her about streaking.  She talked to the doctor and came back and said one easy mile a day for a few days.  In any case, I will be glad to get through this month and get back to my normal slow.  I did yard work for most of the afternoon and then went into town and ran 3.6 miles on the roads and sidewalks.

Back home in time for the Sunday Night 5K

 I squeezed in a 1.1-mile run Friday morning before leaving for Wylie (NE of Dallas).  I was so beat up from the trail run Thursday night, it would have been hard to get in a longer run.  After a busy day on Saturday, I went to run concrete trails at the park in nearby Plano.  I waited at the park for a while until it quit raining and then took off on the trails.  Some were under water and I had to double back and get creative.  I ended up with 3.1 miles.  I drove back to Huntsville this afternoon, changed into my running short and drove on down to The Woodlands to run the Sunday Night 5K for my 149th time.  I finished in 54:00.  My bulging disc is still a problem, despite the two injections.  I am waiting to be scheduled for a surgery to resolve the problem.

Millican Summer Series - Race 1

 I drove (51 miles) tonight to run Race 1 of the Millican Summer Series, 5K (+) Trail Run in Millican.  About the time the race started, there was heavy rain and lightning.  It was so dark in the woods, it was hard to see the trail.  Many of the trails were under water and the brown mud was extremely slippery.  This was the most miserable race I have ever run.  I slipped in the mud and fell at least 6 times.  I finished in about 1:12:00, but my back and the rest of my body is so sore.  I suppose the good news is that I won my 80 and over age group.

Park opening date moved

 The state park reported more damage from yesterday's storm and moved the reopening date to June 4.  Even then, the trails will still be closed.  In the meantime, I ran again in town this afternoon.  Did 3.3 miles.

Another heavy storm

 I was at Iron Works about noon when we got hit with another heavy storm, heavy rain, wind and hail.  When I got home, I found that one of the trees (next to the one that had the beehive two weeks ago) had several large broken limbs at the top.  It must have been a lightning strike.  The state park is suppose to reopen in a couple of days, but I suppose today's storm will delay it further.  Today's storm moved on and the weather for the rest of the day was pleasant.  I went into town this evening and ran 4 miles.

Long day

 I had to get up early this morning and put out the course marking signs and other tasks for our club's Memorial Day Run at my house.  All went well, except for the heat and humidity.  I took a nap this afternoon and then ran 3.3 miles in town late this evening.

Another busy day

With church today and a lot of tasks to get ready for the race at my house tomorrow, it was a busy day.  It was after 7 this evening that I finally got in a run.  Did 3.2 miles in town.

Saturday without a race

 I started to go down to Magnolia to run Spindle Tree this morning, but I decided not to since I had to be in Conroe at noon for a family affair.  When I got home later this afternoon, I had yardwork to do and then get all of the equipment out of the running club storage locker for our annual Memorial Day run at my house.  I ran the streets in town at 7:30 tonight.  Got in 3.3 miles.

Friday on the streets

 With the park still closed, I got my Friday run in on the streets.  Ran 3.1 miles.

Birthday

 I spent most of my birthday today doing yard work.  Tonight, I went down to Conroe and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.  I do have to share of photo of a pair of socks I received from my good friend, Bridgette Collins.  I'm glad she thinks I'm only 38.  Bridgette and I worked together in the early 90's.  Then, she moved to Dallas and began running.  She has since run a bunch of marathons, written 5 books (4 on running) and serves as a running coach.  She now lives in Cypress.  She is a great person and has done so much for the sport of running

State park still closed

 The latest is that the state park will reopen on May 30.  And even then, the trails will still be closed for a while.  At least, it is during biting horse fly season.  In the meantime, I ran 3.2 miles on the streets in town.

Amazing ankle recovery

 I learned over the years that injuries that come on suddenly tend to go away suddenly.  The ankle that hurt so much yesterday was much better today.  I ran 3.6 miles on the roads in town this evening.  I only had to deal with the back issue.  Wish that had come on suddenly.

Streak saver mile

 My ankle was sore as heck today.  I iced it three times today and waited until nearly 9 tonight to try to run.  I went to the mall parking lot and got in a little over a mile.  Painful, but I am confident that I did not make it worse.

Day did not go as planned

 I had to go to Houston this afternoon.  After church, I got in a mile at the mall parking lot, with the intention of running more at the track late tonight after getting back from Houston.  While in Houston, a beekeeper was suppose to remove a beehive from the tree in my front yard.  He showed up about 9 p.m. just after I got back from Houston.  My grandson went outside barefooted and stepped on a bee and got stung.  Somehow, in all the commotion, I did something to my ankle.  I figured it was a pinched nerve and would be okay after I started running.  I got to the track at 11 tonight and ran one painful lap.  I decided not to risk making it worse.  So, the streak is alive with 1.2 miles today.

Mindy Moses Memorial 5K

 I did not know Mindy Moses, but I ran the Mindy Moses Memorial 5K in Bellville (for the 4th time) this morning.  A nice town and a lot of nice people.  Mindy Moses's Mother came up and introduced herself and then introduced me to Mindy's brother.  Mindy must have been a well-liked person;  they always have a large crowd at this race.  I finished the race in 53:56 and was 2nd of 4 in the 70 and over age group.

No rain today

 For a change, we had no rain today.  With the park still closed, I ran 3.1 miles on the streets in town early this afternoon.

Another heavy storm

 Another heavy storm came through this evening and there is a lot of flooding in the area.  Huntsville State Park was suppose to reopen tomorrow, but I see on FB that they will remain closed for now.  This was my day for running with the Fass Brewing Run Club in Conroe, but the storm was in the forecast.  I went into town early this afternoon and ran 3.3 miles on the track and on the roads.

Streets in town

 Late this evening, I ran 3.3 miles on the streets in town.  The state park is suppose to re-open in 2 days, but another heavy rain is in the forecast for tomorrow.

Back to the mall

 I went back to the old mall parking lot late this evening and ran 5 laps for a total of 3.5 miles.

More rain today

 I had appointments this morning and then it rained most of the afternoon.  I finally got in a 3.5-mile run on the streets in town late this evening.

New venue

 It rained most of the day and I did not get a chance to run until later this evening.  With the state park still closed, I had to run elsewhere.  I ended up running around the outer edge of the West Hill Mall (now state offices) parking lot.  Not bad.  It is 7/10th of a mile around, flat, concrete and no tripping hazards and virtually no traffic.  I ran 5 laps for a total of 3.5 miles.  It might be a good place for one of those pre-operation midnight runs.

Miles and Smiles 5K

 I started streak year 4 off with the Miles & Smiles 5K in Madisonville.  I like the relatively short drive and 9 a.m. start.  Accurate course, mostly on a rough trail through a large park.  I felt lucky to have no slips and falls, but I did not have to stop once and get a rock out of my shoe.  I finished in a slow 57:46 and was first of one in the 80 and over age group.  I appreciate the belt buckle age group award, huge, heavy and beautifully designed.  It is much nicer than any marathon finisher belt buckle I have received.  I have been introduced at races before, but this was the first time I have been handed the microphone and asked to speak.  Well, it was a nice chance to convince everyone to start a running streak.

3-year streak

 I ran 3.2 miles on the streets in Huntsville late this morning.  This completed 3 years on my current running streak.  During this streak (1,096 days), I ran 3,903.1 miles, an average of 3.56 per day.  Also, during this 3 years, I ran 213 races, an average of 71 per year.

Fass Brewery 5K

 As usual for Thursday, I went down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.  Not much pain in the back, but felt a little unstable.

Back injection #2

 I had the 2nd injection in my lower back to treat my bulging disc about noon today.  I was suppose to be completely asleep, but I sure felt it.  Hopefully, it will help.  I ran laps at the track early this morning to keep my streak alive.  Because of the injection, I was not able to eat or drink anything all morning.  I kept the distance at the track to 1 mile to avoid any dehydration issues.

Kate Barr Ross Park run

 Late this morning, I went over to the Kate Barr Ross Park and ran 3.1 miles on the roads.  A city cemetery maintenance truck passed me twice.  I must have looked bad.

Running the streets in town

 I worked out at Iron Works this afternoon and then took off running the streets from there.  So much traffic.  I got in 3.2 miles without getting run over.

Sunday Night 5K

 I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands tonight.  I finished in a slow 54:33.

Hog Crazy 5K Trail Run

 I ran the Hog Crazy 5K Trail Run in Millican this morning.  As I expected, it would be muddy and slippery.  I fell once going up a muddy embankment.  No injuries; just got muddy.  I finished in 1:04:02 and was first  of one in my age group.

Day 1 without the park

 With the park closed due to damage caused by about 21 inches of rain since Sunday, I had to find another place to run today.  I waited for the heavier rain to ease up today and ran 3.2 miles on the streets in Huntsville, partly in a light rain.

Fass Brewery 5K

I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight.  Nice sunny weather after about 12 inches of rain in Huntsville last night and this morning.  At Huntsville State Park, they worked this week cleaning out the lodge after the flood last Sunday.  Well, it flooded again today, as can be seen in the photo.  There is a paved street in front of the lodge, which is part of my road running route.  Of course, there are a lot of trees down and other damage to the park.  They announced today that the park will be closed until May 13.

First post-surgery run

 I ran 3.3 miles on the roads at the park early this afternoon.  I had some pain in the right leg from the surgery yesterday, but my back was more bothersome.  My upcoming challenge will be a 10K race this Saturday.

Leg surgery today

 I ran very early this morning (2 miles at midnight).  Normally, I would go to the track for a midnight run.  With all the rain, half the track would be muddy.  So, I went to the state park.  They gave me the code to get in after 10 pm and I ran on the roads, away from the camping areas.  Never saw anyone else or any cars driving around.  The only wildlife I saw were fizzy black caterpillars on the road.  I had an appointment with my pain management doctor in Huntsville this morning and he scheduled another injection in my back next Wednesday.  Then, I drove down to Tomball (just south of The Woodlands) for the 2nd of 3 surgeries to neutralize bad veins in my legs.  No running for the rest of the day.  For the month of April, I ran a total of 95.4 miles (average 3.18 miles a day).  This was the first month since August 2021 that I ran less than 100 miles.

Lots of trees down at the park

 Lots of trees fell at the park during the heavy storm last night.  Just driving into the park, 3 large trees had fallen over the road and had been removed.  I talked to the superintendent and he said there had been a lot of flooding.  There was 14 inches of water in the lodge.  I do not recall that ever happening in my 35 years or so visiting the park.  The trails must be a mess.  I stayed on the roads and got in 3.3 miles.

Before the rain

 We have a very heavy rain tonight, but I got in 4 miles at the park this evening, mostly on the trails.  I am sure the trails will be a mess tomorrow.

Unusual Saturday run at the park

 I usually have a race somewhere on Saturday.   I woke up a little before 6 this morning with the intention of driving down to Magnolia to run the Spindle Tree 5K at 7:30.  I decided against it and went back to sleep.  I went to the park late this afternoon and ran 4.4 miles on the trails.

 I made it out to the park late this morning and got in 3.2 miles, mostly on the roads.

 I felt much better today and went down to Conroe this evening and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.

Tough 5K

 My BP was low this afternoon, but I managed to get in 3.1 slow miles on the roads at the park.

 As usual for Tuesday evening, I met up with the group at the park.  I ran 3.1 miles, almost all on the trails.

Back to Iron Works

 I stopped working out at Iron Works for 3 weeks while my back was at its worst.  I started back a few days ago, but am being careful not to make matters worse.  I worked out early this afternoon and then ran 3.4 miles at the park, mostly on the roads.  I have a follow up appointment with the pain management doc next week.  Maybe he has some solutions besides the inversion table.

Roads and trails

 I had visiting family today and did not make it out to the park until about 5 pm.  I started running on the roads and then switched to the trails.  Got in 4 miles.

Spring Fling 5K

 I ran our club's Spring Fling 5K at Elkins Lake Sub-division this morning.  My back and leg condition was a continuation of yesterday and I finished the very hilly course in 1:00:56.  Last year, I finished in 51:11.

Friday at the park

 I seem to have regressed on my back and leg issue, but I got in 3.4 miles on the trails at the park this afternoon.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight - for the 35th time.

Inversion table

 The pain management doctor recommended that I get an inversion table to help ease the bulging disc.  I bought one and started using it today.  In the meantime, I ran 4 miles at the park this afternoon, mostly on the roads.

All roads

 I stayed on the roads at the park this evening and got in 4 miles.

Tax day

 This April 15th, I finished up my taxes this afternoon and gave them to the lady locking the post office door at 4:30 pm. I then went to the park and ran 4.4 miles, mostly on the trails.  The back and left leg are better, but still a way  to go to get back to 100 percent.

Trip to Tyler

 After the race in Conroe yesterday, I attended my grand son's football game in Huntsville and then drove to Tyler to attend my high school class reunion (class of 1959).  I drove back to Huntsville this afternoon and got to the park at 6 pm.  I ran 4 miles, some on the trails, but mostly on the roads.

B52 Brewing 5K

 I ran the B52 Brewing 5K in Conroe this morning and finished in 53:41.   Was 1st of 2 in the 80 and over age group.

Back to park trails

 Seems like it has been a while since I have been on the park trails.  Late this morning, I ran 3.3 miles on the trails and realized that my back and leg are not fully recovered.  However, the hardest thing I did all day was trying to assemble the inversion table I bought at the doctor's suggestion.

Fass Brewery 5K

 Tonight was my first post-injection run.  I felt better today and caught up on some yardwork.  Tonight, I went down to Conroe and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.  While my back and leg were not at 100%, I was able to finish the 5K without much pain.

Injection day

 At mid-night this morning, I ran 1.2 miles on the muddy track in town.  Then, this morning I went in for the injection in my back.  They put me out for the injection, but I was at the doctor's office for less than an hour.  Quick process.  The pain is still there from my bulging disc, but I do feel better.  The doctor recommended that I get an inversion table and I bought one this evening (a lot of assembly required). 

Streak saver run

 I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 1 mile, which is the minimum for the Streak Association.  I have to run again at midnight tonight, because I get the injection in my back tomorrow morning and cannot run for the rest of the day.

Eclipse day run

 I drove my son and grand son up to Waco this morning to watch the total eclipse and return to Huntsville.  I went to the park this evening to run.  It did not go well.  I only ran 1.2 miles.  I was afraid that my left leg was going to collapse.  I hope the injection in my back on Wednesday helps the leg too.

Sunday Night 5K

 I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woo0lands tonight and finished in 59:25.  I am so looking forward to the injection in my back and, hopefully, getting back to my normal slow.

Little further

 The pain in my back and left leg continues, but I was able to get in 3.2 miles on the park roads this evening.

Friday at the park

 It was not fun with the back problem, but I got in 3.1 slow miles on the roads at the park this afternoon.

Fass Brewery 5K

While it was slow and somewhat uncomfortable, I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight.  With the change in seasons, it has changed from a night run to a daylight run.

New issue

 I woke up this morning with a very sore left calf.  I have no idea where that came from, unless it is from awkward running due to the bulging  disc.  I iced it and took it easy all day.  Late this evening, I went to the park to see if it was possible to run and try to get in a mile.  It was tough getting in a mile, but it did not get worse.  I kept going and got in 3.1 miles.

Pain Management doctor appointment

 I had an appointment with the pain management doctor this morning in reference to my bulging discs.  He schedule me for an injection in my back on May 10.  I did not get into the streaking with him.  He did say that they will put me out for the injection and someone will have to drive me home.  So, this evening, I met up with the group at the park and ran a slow 3.7 miles on the roads.

Snake number 1

 I went to the park late this Monday morning, but my back would allow me to run 1.2 miles on the trails.  I tried again this evening and was able to add 2.3 miles, for a total of 3.5 miles.  During the brief time on the trails this evening, I encountered a large black snake (about 4 feet), laying across the trail.  I'm not sure what kind of snake it was.

Easter 5K

 I ran the first ever Easter 5K in Magnolia this evening and finished in 53:48.  This gave me 101.9 miles for March and 338.7 for 2024 (1 mile ahead of last year at this time).

Late run

 Had a busy day and did not get a chance to run until about 7 p.m.  I drove to Kate Barr Ross Park and ran 3.2 miles on the roads.

Park getting crowded

 The park is getting crowded for Easter weekend.  I made it out there late this afternoon and got in 3.5 slow miles, mostly on the trails.  I have an appointment on Tuesday with a Pain Management doctor.  Hopefully, he will have a quick solution to the bulging disc in my lower back.

 As usual for Thursday, I made it down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.

Unplanned course

 I went to the park this afternoon and started an unplanned course from a different trail head.  The back is no better, but I got in 3.8 slow miles.

All trails

 Since it is Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park this evening.  I stayed on the trails and ran 3.4 miles.

MRI results

 My doctor's office called today and said that my MRI shows that my back pain is from arthritis and a bulging disc.  They are referring me to a pain management clinic.  Years ago, I had a bulging disc problem, but as I recall the pain was more severe and it went away after a short time.  I cannot remember what treatment I went through.  I had a busy day, but managed to get in 3.2 miles at the park, mostly on the trails.

Back to trails

 We had our club's annual 3.5-mile run at Huntsville State Park this afternoon.  My job was to hike out to the 1-mile point, take photos of all the runners and then pick up the course markings on the way back to the starting point.  My left eye is much better and I was able to put my left contact back in.  3-D vision now!  So, after the race, I ran 3.2 miles, mostly on the trails.

Tyler Azalea Run

 I drove up to Tyler last night to run the Azalea Run this morning.  This was my 13th time running this race, the first time in 1983.  I have always run the 10K, but with my back issue, I switched to the 5K this year.  I finished in probably a Personal Worst 56:18.  I was 3rd place of 3 in the 80 and over age group.

MRI and run

 I had my MRI on my lower back this morning and then went to the park and ran 3.3 miles on the roads.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight, partly in a light rain.  The heavy rain began a little later.

Stayed on the roads at the park

My infected eye is improving, but am staying on the roads for now.  Got in 4 miles at the park this evening.

No MRI today

 I was looking forward to the MRI on my back this morning.  The imaging place would not do the MRI because of my pacemaker.  I am trying to get an appointment at the hospital, but I have to go to the cardiologist first and get the pacemaker placed in a "safe mode."  In the meantime, my left eye is a little better today and I have an appointment with the eye doctor tomorrow.  Hopefully, I can start using my contact on my left eye and return to 3-D vision.  I stayed on the roads again at the park this evening and got in 3.1 miles.

Eye not much better

 I had an appointment with my regular eye doctor this morning.  I showed him the ER doctor prescribed anti-biotic I was taking for my infected eye.  He said that it was for glaucoma and was not an anti-biotic.  He gave me a new prescription.  Turns out, the ER gave the right prescription, but Walgreens gave me the wrong medicine. I hate that place anyway and wish my insurance would contract with CVS.  I  am taking the right medicine now and hopefully I can get my regular vision back  soon.  I stayed on the roads again at the state park later today.  Got in 3.6 miles.

Mono-vision run

 My left eye was sore and swollen shut this morning, presumably from my allergy problem.  I had an appointment with the eye clinic tomorrow, but decided not to wait.  So, I went to the ER late this morning.  As expected, it is infected and the doctor prescribed anti-biotics.  Hopefully, it will clear up soon.  In the meantime, I went to the park this afternoon to run.  With one eye swollen shut, I had mono-vision and stayed on the roads.  I got in 3.5 miles, the last mile in a light rain.

Avoided a PW

 At the risk of sounding positive, I avoided a PW (Personal Worst) this morning.  I had planned to get up early and go down to Magnolia and run the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run.  However, with my back issue, I figured I would set a new 5K PW.  So, I slept in.  I went out to the park later this afternoon and ran 4.1 miles on the trails, partially ii a light rain.  I spent much of this evening on a heating pad.

Slow trail run

 I went to the park this afternoon and ran 3.5 slow miles (slower than my normal slow) on the trails.  I have an MRI on my back next Tuesday morning.

Fass Brewery 5K (Minus)

 I had my last appointment for rehab on my back this afternoon.  It including dry needling.  Tonight, I went down to Conroe to run the Fass Brewery 5K,expecting not to be able to run the whole thing with my back pain and a question mark on the right leg.  When I started running the right leg pain was bad, but eased up after running a while/  It probably masked the back pain.  I thought about completing the whole 5K, but I did not carry a light for the second half in the dark.  I ended up running 1.5 miles.

Surgery day

 I ran 1 mile at the track at midnight this morning to keep my streak alive.  I did not get much sleep and had to be down in The Woodlands for surgery on my leg at 8 this morning.  I guess all went okay.  I had to take it easy all day, but I notice some weakness in the leg where the vein was neutralized.  In the meantime, I called my doctor's office about the possibility of getting an MRI on my back, which is my primary concern right now.  Two more veins to go - and then no compression socks.

Back issue worsens

 My lower back issue was worse today.  After my rehab appointment this afternoon, I went to the track.  I was barely able to run one mile.  I met up with the group at the park this evening and started out on the trails.  It did not take long to realize that I could get in 2.1 miles for my minimum daily run of 3.1.  I ended up with .7 for a total of 1.7 for the day.  One mile is the minimum for the Streak Association, but I have been running at least 3 a day for about 2 1/2 years and 3.1 a day for nearly 2 years.  I have leg surgery in The Woodlands early tomorrow morning and will be able to run for the rest of the day.  My plan is to go back to the track at midnight tonight and get in a run for tomorrow.

Split run

 My BP seems to be back to normal, but I am still dealing with sinus and back issues.  I spent much of today in bed on a heat pad.  I went to the track early this afternoon and ran a mile to make sure I kept my streak alive.  Late this evening, I went to the state park and ran 2.5 miles on the road and trails.  So, 3.5 today.

Another challenging run

 I went back to the park this afternoon and got in a challenging 3.4 miles on the trails.

Skipped a race

 I had planned to run the Spindle Tree 5K in Magnolia this morning, but with the low BP problem, I slept in.  Later this afternoon, I went to the spring break crowded state park and ran 3.4 miles on the trails.  Not easy.  I had to stop and rest a couple times.

Streak challenges

 I seem to have a lot of challenges to my streak lately.  Back pain, sinus headaches and earaches, blood pressure and upcoming surgeries.  I had another episode of low BP today.  I managed to get in 1.6 miles on the trails at the park early this afternoon, but had no strength to go further.  While the minimum distance for Streak Runners International is 1 mile, I have maintained a minimum of 3 miles for about 2 and a half years and a 3.1 minimum for nearly 2 years.  So, I went to the track late tonight and ran 2 miles, to give me 3.6 for the day.  Hopefully, the BP will be back to normal tomorrow.  Next Wednesday, I am having surgery in The Woodlands to remove the first of three bad veins in my legs.  I have a plan to keep my streak alive, but am not sure if it will be the 1-mile minimum or the 3.1 mile minimum.

 As usual for Thursday, I went down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.

Mid-80's

 I am not sure winter is over, but it was in the mid-80's when I went to the park early this afternoon to run.  No change in the back issue (now accompanied by a sinus headache).  I ran 3.8 miles on the roads and trails.

 I went from my third physical therapy appointment (back problem) this afternoon to the park to run.  Got in 3.2 miles, mostly on the roads.

Back to trails

 After 4 days of running in Conroe or The Woodlands, I went to the park early this afternoon and ran trails.  With my back issue, it was not a pretty site.  However, I got in 3.3 miles.

Sunday Night 5K

 This was a bad day for my lower back, but I made it down to The Woodlands this evening for the Sunday Night 5K.  It was probably my slowest 5K ever and I finished in 56:15.  

The Woodlands 10K

 I ran The Woodlands 10K this morning.  It is held in conjunction with The Woodlands Marathon and Half Marathon.  I finished in 1:47:25 and was 3rd of 3 in the 75 and over age group.  This was about 7 minutes slower than the last time I ran it (2 years ago).  Got to visit with a lot of good friends.

To The Woodlands for Packet Pickup

 I went to The Woodlands late this morning to visit the expo and pick up my packet for The Woodlands 10K tomorrow morning.  Gotta get up real early in the morning for a 7 a.m. start.  While I was down there, I ran 3.2 miles on the waterway.

Fass Brewery 5K

 As usual for Thursday, I went down to Conroe tonight and ran 5K with the Fass Brewery Running Club.  I finished up February with 112.8 miles  Combined with January, it's 236.8 miles for 2024, including 13 races.

Much cooler

 The temperature was in the 50's when I went to the park late this morning, much cooler than yesterday.  They were still doing the prescribed burn on the south side of the park.  I usually run on the north side, anyway.  I ran 3.4 miles, mostly on the trails.  Had my second rehab appointment at physical therapy later this afternoon.  So far, no improvement in my lower back.

Mid-80's

 It was in the mid-80's when I went to run at the park this afternoon.  Somewhere in Texas, it was at least 90 degrees.  The news reported that it was only the 9th time in 124 years that the temperature reached 90 degrees in Texas.  In any case, I ran 3.8 miles, mostly on the trails.  The only challenge was retying a shoestring with my sore back.

Smoky park

 They are doing a prescribed burn on the southern side of Huntsville State Park today.  I ween out there this afternoon after running elsewhere for four day and ran 4.2 miles.  I ran the trails on the north side, but it was a little smoky.

Late run in town

 I spent much of the day visiting family in Conroe .  It was after 5 pm when I got a chance to run.  It was almost too late to drive to the park to run, so I ran 4.1 miles on the roads in Huntsville.

The Woodlands 5K

 I ran The Woodlands 5K this morning.  This is an event of The Woodlands Marathon, which is next Saturday.  I finished in 50:40 and was 2nd of 3 in the 75 and over age group.

Run the Ramps 5K

I ran the Run the Ramps 5K at Kyle Field in College Station tonight.  This was only the 2nd time the race has been held at night.  Three trips up the ramps, around the top of the stadium and down again.  Really nice at night with the field lit up.  My GPS showed the course to be 3.2 and I finished in 53:43.  This was the 15th time I have ran this race, starting in 1997.  It was not held many times because of work on the stadium and COVID.  My back did not bother me too much, except going down the ramps.

First therapy appointment today

 I had my first appointment at the physical therapist this afternoon.  They think the back pain is from arthritis in my spine.  The therapist also concluded that my hip and butt was weak.  I told her that I had only missed 31 days of running in the last 27 years.  Guess I have to start doing a series of exercises every day.  So, I took my weak parts down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K

Lower back issue

 I have not mentioned it before, but I have been fighting lower back pain for over a month now.  I have been though doctor visits and medication, but it seems worse now.  It is affecting my running.  Tomorrow, I start physical therapy.  I have no idea what they are going to do.  In the meantime, I ran 4.4 miles on the trails at the park this afternoon.  The last mile or so was a challenge.

Trails I have not been on in a while

 I started out on the  trails this evening and included some trails I have not been on in a while.  One was the trail along the lake - muddy as heck and standing water.  No rain in a week and a half.  It must have really been bad for the Rocky Raccoon 50.  In any case, I ran 3.5 miles, most on the trails.

 I got out to the crowded park later this afternoon and ran 4.5, all on the trails.

Law Week 8K

 I ran the Law Week 8K (4.96 miles) in downtown Houston this morning.  It is one of only 2 races I have been running in Houston in recent years.  It was cold and windy this morning, but still good running weather.  I finished in 1:18:11 a little over 2 minutes slower than last year.  I was 4th of 4 in the 80 and over age group.  Got to visit with some good friends.

 I went to the park late this morning and ran 3.4 miles, mostly on the trails.  They are still muddy in places after nearly of week with no rain.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight.  10 years ago today, I ran my 101st and last marathon (Love.Run.Marathon) on the trails at Huntsville State Park.  Since then, I have run 675 races, including 62 half marathons.

Back to the trails

 It was another relatively warm and sunny day, so I got back on the trails at Huntsville State Park.  The trails were still a little muddy in places.  I ended up running 5.8 miles, but the last 1.5 miles on the roads.

 I met up with the group (just me and Jacob today) at the park this evening.  I ran 3.7 miles, all on the park roads.

Sunny, 50's and windy

 I ran a little on the trails at the park this afternoon, but am not ready for the deep muddy areas.  Got in 4.3 miles, almost all on the roads.

More rain

 There was a heavy rain yesterday during the Rocky Raccoon 50 at Huntsville State Park and there was another heavy rain this morning and tornadoes in the area.  I went to the park this afternoon to run and took one attempt on the trails.  I ended up running 4.1 miles on the roads.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia this morning.  Had to run through a little mud and water and some rain, but not bad.  Finished in 52:34.

Last sunny day before more rain

 It was rather warm and sunny this afternoon.  I ran 4.2 miles on the roads at the park.  More rain in forecast for the next few days, just in time for the Rocky Raccoon 50 trail at the park this weekend.

Tuesday with the group

After doing a lot of yard work this afternoon and hauling a big load of yard waste to the city dump, I met up with the group at the park and ran 4 miles, mostly on the trails.

Beaten down trails

 I went back to the park this afternoon to run.  The trails were beaten down after the Rocky Raccoon 100 this weekend.  With over 2 inches of rain on Saturday, there was a lot more mud and water on the trails.  I started on the trails this afternoon and then finished up on the roads - 3.8 miles total.

Texas 10 Series Sienna 5-Miler and Sunday Night 5K

 I got super early and drove 100 miles down to Missouri City to run the Texas 10 Series Sienna 5-Miler.  Beautiful sunny weather.  I finished in 1:23:52 and was 2nd of 2 in the 70 and over age group.  This evening, I drove down to The Woodlands and ran the Sunday Night 5K for the 145th time.  I finished in 51:35.  Today was day 1,000 on my current running streak.  It is the 8th time I have run 1,000 consecutive days.  During this streak, I ran 3,581.8 miles (average 3.58 per day).  Also during this streak, I ran 200 races.

999 days

 Today was the 999th day on my current running streak.  With the state park closed for the Rocky Raccoon 100, I had to run elsewhere.  I planned to go down to Magnolia for the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run, but the forecast last night was for thunderstorms at race time.  So, I slept in.  Then, a buddy called while I was still in bed and asked why I was not at the race.  He said that it rained, but no lightning.  Well, I could have been there.  Late this morning, I went to Kate Barr Ross Park here in Huntsville and ran 3.2 miles on the roads.

Lots of activity at the park

 The Rocky Raccoon 100 is this weekend at the state park, so there was a lot of activity today.  All the course markings are up and people showing up for packet picket.  Lot of runners camping.  In fact, the park is closed to the public this weekend.  I was there early this afternoon and ran 3.5 miles on the trails.

Sandwiched in a run

 I was in Conroe most of the day for my grand daughter's high school wrestling tournament and we had our annual  running club meeting in Huntsville this evening.  In between, I went to the state park and ran 3.4 miles on the roads.  While running through a camping area, I heard my name called.  It was an old friend, Jason Hanley, who I had not seen for years.  While going to Sam Houston State, he ran trails with us.  We had a nice visit.  He was at the park to help with the Rocky  Raccoon 100 this weekend.

Finishing up January

I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 4.2 miles on the trails.  With a temperature of 75 degrees, I expected to see snakes.  No - just water and mud in places.  That gives me 124 miles for the month of January.  Milestones and a streak challenge ahead.  I am approaching 1,000 days on my current running streak and 10 years since my last marathon.  As far as a challenge,  my cardiologist  is scheduling 3 surgeries on my legs.  He said the compression socks are not helping and I have 3 bad veins in my legs.

 Even though our group has thinned out, we met at the park this evening.  I ran 3.8 miles, mostly on the muddy trails.  It was 73 degrees - mosquitos are out.

Hog Wild 10K Trail Run

 I ran the Hog Wild 10K Trail Run in Bremond this morning.  The race is on a private ranch several miles outside of Bremond.  Plenty of mud, cow patties and fire ant mounds, but no hogs.  I finished in 1:57:34. about 3 minutes slower than last year.  I was 1st place (of one) in the 80 and over age group.  In fact, I was the only runner over 50.

Muddy trails

 I went to the park early this afternoon and hit the trails for the first time since the heavy rains early this week.  Got in 3.3. miles, but had to get through a lot of mud in low places.  Hope it dries out a bit for those running the Rocky Raccoon 100 miler in about a week.  Then, there was more rain later today.

Fass Brewery 5K

 As usual for Thursday night, I met up with the group at Fass Brewery and ran the 5K course from downtown up through neighborhoods and back to downtown.

No break in the rain today

 I rained all day.  With no break in the forecast, I went to the park this afternoon and ran 3.3 miles on the roads in a steady rain.  A neighbor posted on FB this morning that he measured 12+ inches of rain in the last 48 hours.  I guess he can add a few more inches with the rain today and what is expected tonight.  Just wish we could store some for the long periods of no rain in the summer.

In between the rain and storms

 Early this afternoon, we had a break in the rain and storms.  I went to the nearly empty state park and ran 4 miles on the roads.  With probably 10+ inches of rain in 2 days, the trails must be a mess.

Rainy run

 It rained ALL day.  I thought about the treadmill at Iron Works, but I was not mentally up to that.  So, I went to the park late this evening and ran 3.5 miles on the roads - in the rain.

Around the lake

 It was cloudy and about 40 degrees this afternoon at the park.  Perfect for a longer run.  I ran a 6.7-mile course around the lake.

Frost Your Fanny 5K

 I ran our club's annual Frost Your Fanny 5K in the hilly Spring Lake Sub-division this morning.  Appropriately named with the temperature in the low 20's.  I finished in 51:20.  It was my 6th race this year.

Noon run

 I started running at the park at noon today.  Sunny with a temperature in the high 30's.  Got in 4.7 miles on the trails.

 As usual for Thursday, I went down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.

Not so cold

 I went out to the park to run early this afternoon when the temperature was in the high 30's.  Got in 4.5 miles, mostly on the trails.

Up to 28

 The temperature was up to 28 degrees when I went to the state park to run this afternoon and the roads were in much better condition for driving.  I ran 4 miles, all on the trails.

Frost Flowers

It was 22 degrees this afternoon when I went to the park to run.  We had a light rain this morning, so the roads were pretty treacherous.  Two miles from my house, a truck was flipped over along the highway.  I ran 3.5 on the trails.  I ran into something that I had never seen before, Frost Flowers, sometimes called Ice Flowers.  Jason saw one at the park years ago and told me about it, so I new what they were when I saw them today.  The sap oozes out of slits on the stems of certain plants and freezes.  Obviously, the temperature has to be below freezing, the soil has to be moist or wet and other conditions have to be right.  I do not have a phone with a camera, so I went back to the park late this afternoon and took these photos.

 It was in the 30's this morning when I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia.  Finished in 50:55.

 The state park was nearly empty this afternoon when I went there to run.  I guess that it was the approaching cold weather.  In any case, I ran 4 miles, mostly on the trails.

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K social run in Conroe tonight for the 22nd time.

Early afternoon trails

 I made it out to the park early this afternoon and ran 4.7 miles on the trails.

Colder and windy

 After the rain yesterday, it was cold and windy this morning.  Got in 3.5 miles on the trails at the park. A little muddy in places.

Trying to run between the storms

 The forecast was for thunderstorms pretty much all day.  I went to the almost empty state park early this afternoon.  I waited for a storm to pass and then started running on the roads.  At 2.9 miles, another storm blew through, with close lightning.  The last 2/10th of a mile was a little scary, but I finished with 3.1.

Texas 10 Series Bridgeland 5-Miler & Sunday Night 5K

 I got up very early this morning and drove to Cypress to run the Texas 10 Series Bridgeland 5-Miler.  Like yesterday, perfect running weather.  High 30's and sunny.  I finished in 1:19:28 and was 2nd of 3 runners in the 70 and over age group.  This evening, I drove down to The Woodlands and ran the Sunday Night 5K (for the 144th time).  Finished in 49:20.  Total miles for the day - 8.1 (all on concrete).

25th Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia this morning - for the 25th time.  The temperature was in the high 30's, but was comfortable after a half mile or so.  I finished in 50:32.

Friday before a 3-race weekend

 We had a good rain this Friday morning, but the trails at the park were in good shape this afternoon.  I ran 3.5 miles, mostly on the trails.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight.  Believe this was the 21st time running this social run since last summer.

Mostly roads

 I made it back to the park late this morning and ran 3.7 miles, mostly on the roads.

Return to the park

 After 5 days of running elsewhere, I returned to Huntsville State Park late this morning.  Ran 4.8 miles, all on the trails.

New Years Resolution 5K Run

 I ran our club's New Years Resolution 5K Run here in Huntsville this afternoon.  I finished in a slow 53 something and was 1st of one in the 80 and over age group.
