Resolution 15K and end of the year report

For the second year, I ran the Resolution 15K on the trails at Millican this morning.  Tough course  Map is above.  Up and down embankments, twists and turns, rocks and roots to trip over.  On the good side, the weather was perfect and no mud on the trails.  I finished in 3:36:29, ten minutes slower than last year.  According to my GPS, the course was 9.8 miles (same as last year).  I won first of one in the 80 and over age group.

This race was my 72nd race in 2023 (73 last year) and 1,368th race since I started racing on May 1, 1983.  My mileage in 2023 was 1,365 miles, up from 1,343.9 last year.  No run in 2023 less than 3.1 miles.  Today was day 965 of my current running streak.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia this morning.  Cold - 30 something degrees.  Finished in 49:58.

Working on a new 5K course

 I have been working on a new 5K course for possible use by the club.  It is on the SHSU campus and school is out for the holidays.  So, I ran the very hilly course this afternoon.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K social run in Conroe tonight.  If it was a race, I would have won the 80 and over age group.

Appointment at the cardiologist office

 I had an appointment with the nurse practitioner at my cardiologist's office this afternoon.  She thinks my low BP is due to a lack of salt intake  She reduced my BP medicine and told me to take in more salt.  I left there and went straight to the park.  Ran 5.5 miles, mostly on the trails.

Long line to get into the park

 I went to the park this evening to meet up with the group.  Usually at the late hour, there is no line.  Today there was.  It took me 20 minutes to get in.  I ran 3.5 miles on the trails and roads.

Christmas at the park

 I got to the park at noon and headed out on the trail with normal BP.  Got in 4.5 miles.

Easier run

 My BP was still low this morning.  I took on plenty of salt at lunch and later went for a run on the roads at Kate Barr Ross Park.  I did not feel as weak and completed a continuous 3.2-mile run.  Hopefully, I am getting back to normal.

Another hard run

 I had planned to run the Spindle Tree 5K  in Magnolia this morning, but the BP was too low.  Late this morning, I went over to Kate Barr Ross Park in Huntsville and struggled through 3.1 miles.

Low BP again

 My low blood  pressure appeared again today.  I went to the park early this afternoon and struggled to run 3.2 miles on the trails.  I have an appointment with my cardiologist next Wednesday to find out what is going on.

Fass Brewery 5K

 As usual for Thursday night, I ran the Fass Brewery 5K social run on Conroe tonight.  I always look forward to running past this house in a northern neighborhood in Conroe. I did not even keep track of my time.

All trails

 I made it out to the park late this afternoon and ran 4.3 miles, all on the trails.  No falls, but had to stop a while and visit with my good friend, Curtis Barton.  Had not seen him for a while.

Annual home health visit

 My insurance company sends a nurse to my home every year to do a health assessment.  Several years ago, they found my AFIB.  Today, I was asked if I have fallen this last year.   I told her that I had fallen a bunch of times and explained that the falls were associated with trail running.  She advised me to quit running on the trails.  So, early this afternoon, I went to the park and ran 3.7 miles on the roads and trails.  No falls.

 Another sunny and cool day in Huntsville.  Ran 3.5 miles on the trails at the park early this afternoon.

Longer Sunday run

 Beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon, with the temperature in the 60's.  I ran 6.7 miles on the trails at the park.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I got up early this morning and drove down to Magnolia to run the 100th weekly Spindle Tree Park Run.  It was my 24th time for running this race.  I finished in 48:34.

 I ran 3.7 miles early this afternoon at the park, all on the trails.

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K social run in Conroe tonight. 

Rain at the park

 There was rain early this afternoon at the park, but not at my house.  However,  I did a post-rain at the park; 4.3 miles, mostly on the trails.

 As usual for Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park this evening.  Stayed on the roads for 4 miles.

Sunny and cool

 Looks like good running weather this week.  I ran 3.5 miles at the park this afternoon, mostly on the trails.

Sunday at the park

 Sunny and cold this afternoon.  I made it out to the  park mid-afternoon and got in 5.6 miles, mostly on the trails.

Jingle Bell 5K

 I drove over to Livingston late this morning and ran the Jingle Bell 5K at noon.  I finished the hilly 2-loop course in 51:38.  I was 1 of 1 in the 80 and over age group.  That was my 69th race this year.

Longer Friday run

 My 5K race tomorrow is not until noon, so I ran a little longer this Friday.  I ran 4.6 miles on the trails.  I am glad to report that I was not attacked by any squirrels.  Guess the park being closed for 2 days of squirrel hunting paid off.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K at 7 tonight in Conroe.  I did not set my Garmin, but I am sure I was fast.

Park closed

 With park closed today for squirrel hunting, I had to run elsewhere.  I worked out at Iron Works and then hit the roads from there.  My run included some concrete trails in the park on 7th street.  I ended up with 4 miles.  With so much traffic on the city streets, I remember why I started running at the state park.

Early group run

 The state park will be closed for squirrel hunting from 5 pm today until Friday morning.  So, our running group met up early this afternoon.  I ran 4.1 miles on the trails and warned all the squirrels I could.

 I made it out to the park later this afternoon and ran 3.6 miles, mostly on the trails.

Texas 10 Series Conroe 5-Miler and Sunday Night 5K

 I ran the Texas 10 Series Conroe 5-Miler this morning.  This was my 11th straight year for the 10 or 5-Miler at Conroe.  I finished in 1:22:24 and was 2nd of 3 in the 70 and over age group.  This evening, I went back south to The Woodlands and ran the Sunday Night 5K.  I finished in 49:30.  That gives me a total of 8.1 miles for the day.

Missed my race this morning

 I have run the Reindeer 5K in Lufkin every since starting in 2014 and was signed up for this morning's race.  I ended up getting sick about 11 last night and spent the whole night awake back and forth to the bathroom.  I had a high fever and the chills.  It became obvious that I had to skip the drive to Lufkin.  I finally got a little sleep this morning, but still had a temperature up to noon.  I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.2 miles on the trails.  I feel okay this evening and plan on running two races tomorrow.

Easy Friday

 With 3 races coming up this weekend, I took it easy today with a 3.1-mile run on the trails at the park this afternoon.

Two runs

 I planned to run the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe tonight, but  there was a thunderstorm forecast.  So, I went to the state park early this afternoon and ran 3.1 miles on the roads - in the rain.  The forecast for tonight was updated and no rain was expected for Conroe.  I went down tonight and ran the 5K at 7 p.m.  That gives me 6.2 miles for the day.  I finished November with a total of 118.8 miles and 1,235.2 for 2023.

 I got in 5 miles on the trials and roads at the park early this afternoon.  Looks like bad weather for tomorrow.

Park roads

 After a crowded Thanksgiving weekend, the park was relatively empty today.  I went out late this morning and got in 3.5 miles, all on the roads.

50 and clear

 50 degrees and clear skies.  Good running weather.  I ran trails at the park early this afternoon.  Got in 4.1 miles.

Work and run

 I worked at our club's annual Leftover Turkey Run this morning.  I put out the course markings and worked the finish line.  Nice crowd of 69 runners.  This afternoon, I ran 4.5 miles on the trails at the park.  

Friends of the Running Community 5K

I ran the Friends of the Running Community 5K in The Woodlands this evening.  This is the 3rd race of the Montgomery County Triple (three Thanksgiving week races in Montgomery County).  I completed all three, so I was awarded the Pine Cone Award.  After eating too much today, I ran a slow 52:45..

Run Thru the Woods 5-Miler

I ran the Run Thru the Woods 5-Miler in The Woodlands this Thanksgiving Day.  I finished in 1:26:37 and was first of one in the 80 and over age group.  There were 1,200 registered runners in the 5-mile race and 3,600 in the shorter races.  Big crowd and a lot of good friends.  Below are my finish times for this race.

Conroe Turkey Trot 5K

 I ran the Conroe Turkey Trot 5K this morning for the 9th time.  I finished in just over 51 minutes and was one of one in the 80 and over age group.

 I went down to Conroe tonight and ran the Fass Brewery 5K (social run) at 7 pm.

Snake Number 5

 I encountered my 5th snake of the year while running 5 miles trails at the park late this morning.  This one was a gulf coast ribbon snake, non-venomous, but aggressive.

"Adventure" run

 I met up with the group at the park this evening and decided to run where I do not normally run.  I took off down a road that I had not been on for a while, then went on a trail that I had not run for years.  I found a narrow trail off that one, but eventually found the trail under water.  Anyway, I made it back after running 3.5 miles.  Someone in the group said the new trail was to a bird viewing stand.  I think maybe it was to a snake viewing stand.

 After working out at Iron Works, I went to the state park and ran 3.6 miles on the trails and roads, partly in a light rain.

Sunday at the park

 I made it out to the park mid-afternoon this Sunday and ran 4.7 miles on the trails.

CPT Rowdy Inman Memorial 5K

 I ran the CPT Rowdy Inman Memorial 5K on the Sam Houston campus here in Huntsville this morning. It was sponsored by the ROTC.  Except for a loop around the track at Bowers Stadium, the course is either up or down.  It was non-competitive and I finished in 54:05.  

Misting rain and cooler

 It was 52 degrees with misting rain when I arrived at the park early this afternoon to run.  I ran a completely unplanned course on the trails, which turned out to be 3.2 miles.

Late run

 I had to take my wife down to Tomball this morning for surgery (all is okay) and did not get back to Huntsville until after dark tonight.  I started to get to the park and run with a flashlight on the roads, but it was raining and I was not sure when they closed the park gates.  With dread, I went to Iron Works and ran 3.1 miles on the treadmill.

Almost the same course

 I went to the park early this afternoon and ran almost the same course I ran yesterday.  It came out to be 3.8 miles.

Snake #4

 I almost stepped on a copperhead on the trail this evening.  Luckily, my foot landed next to his (or her) tail as it straddled the trail.  Of course, I was running so fast that it would not have had a chance to strike. I felt okay running and got in 4 miles, mostly of which was on the trails.

Back to The Woodlands

 I had to take my wife to an appointment in The Woodlands today (that's 6 trips to Conroe or further south in the last 5 days), so I did not get to the park until later this afternoon.  Felt a little better and got in 3.6 miles on the trails and roads.

Texas 10 Katy 5K and Sunday Night 5K

 I drove down to Katy early this morning for the Texas 10K Series.  I was signed up for the 5-mile race, but switched to the 5K.  Nice clear weather and a flat course on concrete streets.   I struggled a bit at a half mile and again at 3 miles and finished in 54:28.  Slow, but better than yesterday.  I was the only one over 70, so I received a first place in age group award.  I drove back to Huntsville and we had visiting family all day.  I broke away later this afternoon and drove down to The Woodlands for the Sunday Night 5K.  I felt better and finished in 51:06.

Back Pew 5K

 I ran the Back Pew 5K at the Back Pew Brewery in Porter this morning.  Before becoming a brewery, it was a church.  From the start, I was dizzy and weak and the hills were particularly challenging.  My BP seemed to be back to normal, so I do not know what is going on.  Anyway, I finished in 59:51 and was 2nd in the 80 and over age group.

Later Friday run

 I had to take my wife to Tomball (hour+) for a doctor's appointment this morning and ended up going to the park late this afternoon.  Ran 3.1 miles on the trails.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I went down to Conroe and ran the Fass Brewery 5K at 7 pm today.  Flashlight all the way.  I did not even check my time, but am sure it was slow.

Lots of people on the trails for mid-week

 I ran 4.2 miles on the trails at the park early this afternoon.  I do not recall seeing so many people on the trails for mid-week.  Nice weather, I guess.

Last day of October

 I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.8 miles, mostly on the trails.  That gives me 121.2 miles for the month of October and 1,116.9 for 2023 (a few miles ahead of this time last year).

Late run

 My health insurance company was suppose to send a nurse to my house between 12 and 4 pm today for an annual in-home health assessment.  She call a few minutes before 4 pm and to reschedule for 6 pm.  My day was pretty much wasted already, so I just cancelled and went for a run.  My BP seemed to be back to normal today.  I went to Kate Barr Ross Park about 5 pm and ran 3.5 miles.  Two days ago, it was in the 80's;  today in the 40's.

Planned a longer run

 I had planned a longer run at the park this nice cool Sunday afternoon.  However, the BP was still low.  However, I managed to get in 3.2 miles on the trails.

Spindle Tree 5K

 I drove down to Magnolia early this morning to run the Spindle Tree 5K.  My BP was low this morning and I could feel the weakness trying to run.  I struggled to run 2 miles and for the first time in nearly 900 5K races, I walked the last mile with a nice couple from South Africa.  We finished in 1:01:16.  My BP was been low all day.  To keep my 3.1-mile streak alive, I went to the track later this afternoon and ran one mile.

900 days

 Today was the 900th day of my current running streak.  I ran 3.4 miles on the state park roads late this morning.

Dreaded treadmill

 I had an appointment in Conroe this morning and was down there most of the day.  By the time I got back to Huntsville later this afternoon, the rain and storms began.  I kept checking the forecast and the Fass Brewery 5K back in Conroe looked like it would be rained out.  I headed for the state park, but there was heavy rain to the south.  So, as a last resort, I went to Iron Works and ran 3.3 miles on the treadmill.  Sure glad I do not have to do that very often.

Over 100

 With a 4.3-mile run early this afternoon on the trails and roads at the park, I went over 100 miles for the month (with 5 day remaining).  That's an average of just over 4 miles a day for the month.

 I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.8 miles, mostly on the trails.

Shorter

 Since I ran long (relatively) yesterday, I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.2 miles on the trails and roads.

Around the lake+

 I ran around the lake at the state park this afternoon and added a little more.  Total 7.2 miles.

Late Saturday run at the park

 I drove to Humble this morning for my grandson's football game and then stopped in Conroe on the way back for lunch with family.  I did not make it out to the park until late this afternoon.  I ran 3.2 miles on the trails, fighting off flying insects the whole way.

Longer Friday run

 Since I do not have a race tomorrow, I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 5.5 miles, mostly on the trails.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K tonight in Conroe.  I got held up at 4 traffic lights and had to run with a flashlight the whole run, so it was slow.  Am not even sure what my finish time was.  Nice group to hang around with.  Since I completed 12 runs the last time, I got a Fass Brewery T-shirt and a 4-pack of beer tonight.

Snake #3

 I ran 4.4 miles on the trails at the state park this afternoon.  Saw only my third snake of the season on the trail.  It was a brown snake of some sort.  It got off the trail so fast I could not identify it.  Of course, I probably have passed hundreds of snakes coiled up in the brush next to the trail.  It is a good thing that I run so fast.

As usual for Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park this evening.  I ran 3.9 miles, mostly on the trails.

 After a couple races this weekend, I made it out to the park early this afternoon.  I ran 3.3 miles, mostly on the trails.

Oktoberfest 10K

 I got real early this morning and drove to College Station for the Oktoberfest 10K at Kyle Field, which started at 7:15 a.m.  It was cold hanging around for the start, but perfect weather for running.  Most of the course was on concrete streets on the Texas A&M campus, with the finish on the track inside Kyle Field.  I finished in 1:43:59.  The highest age group was 65 and over and there were 597 finishers, so I did not place.

Shiitake Mushroom Festival 5K

 It has been a few years since I ran this race, but I did the Shiitake Mushroom Festival 5K in Madisonville this morning.  I finished in 49:41 and was 2nd of 2 in the 70 and over age group.  After the race, I drove to College Station to pick up my packet for a race there in the morning.

Friday at the park

 I made it to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.3 miles, mostly on the trails.

No Fass 5K

 I went down to Conroe this evening to run the Fass Brewery 5K (social run rather than a race) at 7 p.m.   There was some sort of a festival going on in downtown Conroe and many of the streets were blocked.  I finally found a parking place and walked to the brewery.  They had moved the run to The Woodlands, but I did not get the message.  So, I drove further south to The Woodlands and parked near the waterway.  I never saw the group, but ran 3.4 miles along the waterway.

Running in the 60's

 In the 1960's, I only ran when the Army made me.  The temperature this afternoon was in the 60's and I willingly got in 4.4 miles on the trails and roads at the park.

 It was group night at the park this evening.  I ran 3.2 miles, mostly on the trails.

 I made it out to the park this afternoon and ran 4.1 miles, starting on the trails and finishing on the roads.

Around the lake

 Nice sunny and relatively cool weather this Sunday afternoon.  I went to the park and ran a 6.6-mile loop on the trails around the lake.

Heights 5K

 For the 12th time, I ran the Heights 5K in Houston this morning.  It started at 7 am, so I had to get up plenty early.  The temperature was 70 degrees, the course is down and back on the flat and very smooth asphalt of Heights Blvd.  Very comfortable  running.  I finished in 48:08 was was 1 of 1 in the 80 and over age group.

 Back to the park this afternoon.  Got in 3.3 miles on the trails and roads.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I went down to Conroe this evening and ran the Fass Brewery 5K at 7 p.m.  It is getting dark early now and most of the run was in the dark.  I carried a flashlight and used it most of the run.  I finished in about 51 minutes.  

Expecting to run in the rain

 There was rain in the area again today (no  complaints) and I went to the park early this afternoon, expecting to run in the rain.  I ran 3.7 miles on the park roads and missed the rain.  I ran into a guy in the picnic area that said, "Didn't I see you that last time I was at the park?"  Probably so.

Negative test

My COVID test this morning was negative and my BP was normal.  I worked out at Iron Works and later this evening ran 3.8 miles on the roads at the park - much of it in a heavy rain.

Turned the corner, I think

 I felt much better today and my BP seemed to be back to normal.  I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 4.6 miles on the trails.  The run today put me over 1,000 miles for 2023, a little ahead of where I was at this time last year.  I plan to COVID test tomorrow and hopefully it will be negative.  I need to get back to the gym.

Kate Barr Ross Park run

 My BP was very low this afternoon, so I opted not to go to The Woodlands for the Sunday Night 5K.  Huntsville State Park was closed today for a big bike raced.  So, late his afternoon, I went to Kate Barr Ross Park in Huntsville and ran 3.1 miles on the roads and cross country trails.  Slower than my normal slow.

3.1 miles, in 2 parts

 Rather than another home test, I went to Walgreens this afternoon and tested for COVID.  The test came back positive.  My blood pressure dropped even more (91/48) .  After speaking to my cardiologist, I went to the track this evening and ran 1.1 miles to meet the minimum requirement for the Running Streak Association.  Later tonight, I ran another 2 miles at the track, for a total of 3.1 miles.  That meets my minimum for the last 2+years.   That gives me 111.3 miles for the month of September and 995.2 for 2023.

Still positive

 I took another home COVID test tonight and am still testing positive.  The doctor had given me a prescription for Bromphen for the sinus issue.  When I picked them up a few days ago, the pharmacist warned me that it could increase my blood pressure.  I have noticed that my blood pressure was actually getting lower everyday.  I went to the park later this afternoon and started on the roads before switching to the trails.  After a mile or so, I started getting tired and then frequently dizzy.  I had to stop several times and hold on to a tree and ended up with 3.3 miles.  I checked my blood pressure several times when I got home and it was unusually low.  Well, no more Bromphen for me.  I had planned to run the Spindle Tree 5K tomorrow morning, but with the positive test today, I guess that is out.  I made an appointment tomorrow afternoon for COVID  testing at the drug store.  

Empty trails

 I went to the park in the middle of the afternoon today (when it was nearly 100 degrees) and ran 4 miles on the trails.  Never saw another person on the trails.  I guess that is good since I may be contagious.

No fever

 No fever today, but I felt lousy all day.  I spent much of the day on the couch, but did get out to the park early this afternoon for 3.5 miles on the park toads.

 I still have a fever today, but I went to the park this evening and ran 3.2 miles on the roads.

Got COVID

I tested positive  for COVID this morning  and have been running a fever all day,   I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.1 miles on the trails.  It seemed like 10 miles

Hot Sunday af the park

 I went to the park early this afternoon.  The temperature was in the 90's with high humidity.  I ran 5.4 miles, most on the trails.  This evening, I feel like I have the beginnings of a sinus infection.

No race this morning

Normally,  I run a race every Saturday morning.  In fact, it was last April when I missed a Saturday.  I intended to run the Run The Woodlands 5K this morning.  However, I woke up at 3 a.m. and could not go back to sleep.  I finally turned off the alarm about 6:30 and decided not to make the drive to The Woodlands.  After getting some sleep until about 10 a.m., I got up and went to the state park.  Ran 4.1 miles on the trails.

 After a usual workout at Iron Works, I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.5 miles on the trails.

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening, for the 11th time.  I finished in 50:36.

Half and half

 This evening, I ran 4.2 miles at the park, first half on the trails and the second half on the roads.

Low humidity

 The humidity was obviously low when I went to the park this afternoon.  Very comfortable running.  I ran unplanned trail course, which turned out to be 3.3 miles.

Sunday afternoon at the park

I made it out to the park this Sunday afternoon.  Once I got over a little stiffness from the 10K yesterday, I felt okay.  Got in 4.4. miles on the trails. 

Woodforest Charity 10K

 I ran the Woodforest Charity 10K in Conroe this morning.  The temperature was only around 90, but the humidity was very high.  I was completely soaked in sweat when I finished.  My time was 1:45:05.  There were only 2 of us in the 70 and over age group and I got 2nd.  Got to visit with a lot of good friends

Sluggish

 I felt sluggish when I ran trails at the park late this morning.  With a race tomorrow, I took it easy with a 3.2-mile run on the trails.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening for the 10th time.  I thought I had a faster pace, but I finished in 51:17.

Cool in the 90's

 The 90+ degree temperature almost feels cool.  Much more comfortable running.  Got in  3.8 miles at the park this evening, mostly on the trails.

Trails and roads

 I had a busy day and did not make it to the park until almost 5 this evening.  The temperature was very comfortable.  I started on the trails and switched to the roads after 2 miles.  Ended up with 4.5 miles total.  By the way, I passed on the Gruene 10K in New Braunfels this past Saturday after running for 12 straight years.  The race deteriorated over the years and it was just not worth the over night trip to New Braunfels.

 I got up very early this morning and drove over an hour to Cypress to run the Tunnel to Towers 5K, in support of the military and first responders.  I finished in 48:00.  I got visit with a long-time friend, Donna Crocker of Cypress.  We ran a lot of the same marathons for many years.  I drove back to Huntsville, took a nap and then drove back south to NRG Stadium in Houston for the Sam Houston - Air Force game.  Just got home just before midnight.  Channel 2 of Houston covered the Tunnel to Towers race.  My mug is at 1:15.  https://www.click2houston.com/video/news/2023/09/09/tunnel-to-towers-5k-run-and-walk-honors-9/11-heroes-first-responders/

Last hot run

 It was 104 degrees when I finished up 3.5 miles at the park early this afternoon.  Mostly on the trails.  Hopefully, this was my last hot run of the summers  The temperature should be back in single digits for the fall.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening and finished in 49:37.

Tired of the heat

 We are in September and the heat is still exceeding 100 degrees.  I went out to the park early this afternoon and ran 4 miles on the trails.  I had intended to run a little farther, but I showed signs of dehydration.  Made it back in okay and took in plenty of fluids. 

Return to the park

 After 3 days of 5K's elsewhere, I returned to Huntsville State Park this evening.  Here it is September and the temperature was 102.  I ran 3.5 miles, mostly on the park roads

Labor Day 5K

 I ran our club's Labor Day 5K in the hilly Spring Lake Sub-division in Huntsville this morning.  Surprisingly, I ran faster than on the flat course in The Woodlands last night.  I finished in 51:22.

Sunday Night 5K

 As usual for the first Sunday of the Month, I went down to The Woodlands this evening and ran the Sunday Night 5K, put on by The Woodlands Running Club.  I finished in 52:26, which I think was a new PW (personal worst) for this course.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia.  Finished in 50:38.

Friday trails

 I ran 3.4 miles on the trails at the park early this afternoon.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I went down to Conroe this evening and ran the Fass Brewery 5K and finished in 50:05.  That gives me 109.4 miles for the month of August and 880.9 for 2023.  That's compared to 882.7 for this time last year.

Unplanned trail course

 I went out to the park early this afternoon and ran a completely unplanned course on the trails.  It turned out to be 3.7 miles.

Another cool day

 Even though it was in the high 90's this evening, it felt like Fall.  Maybe the humidity was low.  I started on the trails at the park, but ended up on the roads.  3.5 miles total.

Cool 90

 It was a relatively cool 90 degrees when I went to the park to run early this afternoon.  I was a little beat up from the 5 miles yesterday in high heat, but I got in 3.5 miles on the trails today.

Rain - finally

 After 2 months without a drop of rain at my house, we finally got a little this evening.  Am not sure it was enough to bring my dead lawn back to life, but it at least cooled things off a bit.  The forecast is for 2 days of less than 100 degrees temperature.  Then, back up to 100+.  Oh well!  Late this morning, I went to the park when it was 104.  I ran 5 miles on the trails.  It was 109 when I finished.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia this morning and finished in 50:57.

Sluggish run

 I went to the park about noon when it was over a 100 degrees and ran 3.2 miles on the trails.  I felt unusually sluggish, especially after running only 3.1 yesterday.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I went down to Conroe this evening and ran the Fass Brewery 5K.  I finished in 49:40, a few seconds slower than last week.

All roads

 I made it out to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.4 miles, all on the roads.  Not much shade at this time of day, so with a 100-degree temperature, it was plenty hot.

Group night

 I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.5 miles, mostly on the trails.

The heat continues

 I think it has been over a 100 degrees every day for over a month and the forecast is for more of the same on into September.  I will never complain about having to run in the cold weather this winter.  I went to the park late this morning before it got too much over 100 and ran 3.2 miles on the trails.

Hot trail run

 I went to the park about 2:30 this afternoon when it was 108 degrees and ran 4.3 miles on the trails.

Heat Wave 5K

 I ran our club's Heat Wave 5K in the Waterwood Sub-division about 25 nukes from Huntsville this morning.  It is appropriately named, especially this year.  I finished in Just over 55 minutes.

Late morning run

 I had a busy day, but managed to squeeze in 3.3 miles on the trails at the park late this morning.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening, for the 6th time.  Finished in 49:26.  The temperature was 107 on my truck thermometer, but the run was tolerable on the shady streets.

Cooler

 According to my truck thermometer, the temperature was only 97 degrees when I got to the park about 3 pm today.  Got in 4.3 miles on the trails and never saw anyone else  The forecast is for 100+ every day for the rest of the month.

Roads to the south

 I ran 3.4 miles at the park this evening, mostly on the roads south of the Nature Center.  Have not run those roads for a year or so.  However, they are just as hilly as the roads I normally run.

All trails today

 I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 4.1 miles, all on the trails.  Another day over 100 degrees.  

Millican Summer Series Party and Awards

 Late this morning, I drove over to Millican with some of my family for the Millican Summer Series Party and Awards Ceremony.  Good food and a good time with friends and family.  Darn, it was hot, though.  Last year, I got there early and went for a run on the trails.  This time, it was just too hot at noon.  Being the only runner over 80, I got first in my age group for the series.  After driver to and spending some time in College Station after Millican, we drove back to Huntsville.  It was almost 6 pm before I got out to the state park to run.  Got in 4 miles on the trails and roads.

Southern Star Brewery 5K

I ran the Southern Star Brewery 5K in Conroe this morning (398 finishers).  This was my 9th straight year for running this race, which began in 2015.  I finished in a slow 54:57.  I'm not sure if it was the heat or I am just getting old and slow.  In any case, I got 2nd of 2nd in the 80 and over age group.  My good friend, Larry, just turned 80 and beat me for 1st place.  This race is always fun because I get to visit with a lot of good friends.

This 100+ heat is getting old

 I'm tired of running in the 100+ heat every day, but there is no end in sight.  Maybe in September we will finally get some rain and cooler temperatures.  I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.3 miles on the roads, mostly through the almost empty camping area.

Millican Summer Series Race Number 6

 I ran the 6th and last of the Millican Summer Series 5K+ Trail  Run in Millican  tonight.  Someone said it was 107 degrees.  I believe it.  I finished in 1:02:02, my slowest of the series by about a minute.

I made it out to the park early this afternoon  and ran my "regular" 4-mile course on the trails.

Another day over 100

 This was another day with the temperature over 100.  I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 4 miles on the trails.  Never aaw anyone else on the trails.

Plano and Sunday Night 5K

 I went up to the Dallas area Friday afternoon to spend some time with the family there.  I ran in Plano on a concrete trail Saturday evening when it was 107 degrees.  Part of it was shaded and I ran 3.2 miles.  I drove back to Huntsville this afternoon and got got back about 5 p.m.  Then, I drove down to The Woodlands and ran the Sunday Night 5K for the 140th time.  I finished in 49:51.

Early Friday run

 With a busy afternoon, I ran early this Friday morning, like 9:30 at the park.  Got in 3.3 on the trails and roads.

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening and finished in 51:26.

4 miles @ 105 degrees

 I had an appointment in The Woodlands today, so I did not get to the park until about 4:30 this evening.  The temperature was 105 and I ran 4 miles on the trails.

The heat continues

 It was 104 when I got to the park to run this evening.  Got in 3.3 miles on the trails and shady roads.  No end in sight for the 100+ temperatures.

 It was 102 degrees early this afternoon when I got to the park to run.  When I finished up 3.4 miles on the trails, it was 104.  That gives me 110.4 miles for the month of July and 771,5 for 2023 (3.7 less than 2022 at this point).

Compression socks

 Last week, my cardiologist reviewed the results of a test on my blood circulation and determined that I had some bad veins in my legs.  So, he told me to wear compression socks up to my knee all day every day and come back for retesting in October.  I ordered some socks online and started wearing them today.  I went to the park just before noon and ran 4.4 miles on trails that I have not been on for a couple months.  My truck thermometer showed 100 degrees when I finished.  I did not feel any different wearing the socks, except for the heat.

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia this morning and finished in 53:11.

 I made it out to the park at noon and ran 3.2 miles on the trails in the heat.  Never saw anyone else or any critters.

Millican Summer Series 5K Trail Run Race 5

 I ran the Millican Summer Series 5K Trail Run Race 5 this evening.  Finished in 59:30, about a minute and a half faster than Race 4 a couple weeks ago.

3-Day road streak

 I went out to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.6 miles on the park roads.  That makes 3 days in a row on the roads, but Millican is tomorrow.

Another day on the roads

 I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.4 miles on the roads.

Stayed on the roads

 I made it to the park just before noon and ran 3.6 miles, all on the roads.

Cool wave

 It seemed relatively cool this afternoon, with the temperature down to 98 or so.  I went to the park at 2 p.m. and ran 4.6 miles on the trails.  I tripped and fell once, but it was just a regular fall; got dirty and skinned up my knee.

Dog Days 5K

 I seem to be getting slower and slower.  I ran our club's Dog Days 5K at Elkins Lake Sub-division in Huntsville this morning.  Very hilly course, like a roller coaster.  I do not have my time yet, but it was 54 minutes plus, probably a personal worst for a road 5K.

Back is a little better

 My back felt a little better today (fall 9 days ago).  I worked out at Iron Works this morning and was able to do a little more.  Then, I got to the park just before noon and ran 3.3 miles, mostly on the trails.

Fass Brewing 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewing 5K in Conroe this evening and finished in 53:50.  According to my truck thermometer, it was 101 degrees at race time.

All trails

 I keep thinking that I need to run more on the roads, but with this 100-degree heat, it is obviously cooler on the trails.  One week after my back wrenching fall on the trails, it is still hurting.  Not so much when I run, but when I work the machines at Iron Works.  I skipped Iron Works today and ran 4.3 miles, all on the trails at the park.

Another late run

 With the temperature at 100, I decided to run later this evening.  Got in 3.8 miles, mostly on the trails.  As I ran past the superintendent's house, he was leaving his driveway and got out to chat.  He is recovering from rotator cuff surgery and has his arm in a familiar looking sling.  He was running trails a few weeks ago and tripped and fell, tearing his rotator cuff.  I fell while running on concrete in 1995 and tore mine, so I know what he is going through.  I guess running is a dangerous sport.

Late run at the park

 I had a busy Sunday, including a trip to Cleveland (Texas) and did not make it out to the park until after 6 this evening.  Even though the temperature, according to my truck thermometer, was 100 degrees, it felt much cooler.  I ran 3.5 miles, mostly on the park roads.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I really did not feel like going down to Magnolia early this morning to run, but I had promised a friend that he could ride down with me.  I was beat from the heat, the back issue and sinus issues, but I went down anyway to the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run.  I finished in 53:11, a new PW (Personal Worst) for that race.

Off the trails

 I went to the park early this afternoon when the temperature was nearly 100 degrees and ran 3.2 miles on the park roads.  It was especially tiring, but I am not sure if it was from the back issue and the trail run last night or just the roads and heat.  It always seems cooler on the trails.

Millican Summer Series 5K Trail Run #4

 When I got up this morning, I iced my back.  After lunch, I went to the track and ran 1 mile.  The pain was tolerable.  I iced it again this afternoon and then headed for Millican for the race (3.3 miles).  When I arrived, it was 102 degrees on my truck thermometer.  There was no pain in my back, as long as I did not bend over or twist my torso in any way.  I decided to run and just take it easy and try not to trip and fall.  I got through the race without falling and finished in 1:00:47.  That gives me 4.3 miles for the day.

Messed up

 I went out to the park early this afternoon.  I got 1.8 miles on the trails and tripped on a root and took a hard fall.  Did something to my back.  I struggled to get back to the trail head and got in my minimum 3.1 miles.  I thought after continuing to run, the pain would ease up.  It did not.  For the rest of the day, I have been taking Ibuprofen, laying on a heating pad, alternating with ice.  As I suppose other streakers do, I think about continuing my streak.  The minimum distance for the Streak Association is one mile.  Today, marked exactly 22 months of running at least 3 miles a day and about 14 months of at least 3.1.  I am suppose to run the 3.3-mile Milligan Summer Series Trail Run tomorrow night and this is the third summer that I have run all their races.  My plan for now is to go to the track tomorrow morning and see what running a miles feels like.  I know that back pain does not disappear quickly.

Hot 6.2

 I ran 6.2 miles on the trails at the park late this morning.  Hot and humid.  Even my socks and shoes were soaked with sweat.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run (held every Saturday) down in Magnolia.  Finished in 50:38.

A little rain

 I got to the park late this morning.  I did not know rain was in the forecast, but it rained some during my 3.2-mile trail run.  None at my house, though.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I ran the Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening and finished in 48:31.  After some much needed rain this afternoon, the temperature was in the 80's, instead of the 90's.

Return to the park

 After 4 days of running elsewhere, I returned to Huntsville State Park early this afternoon.  Not too many people there; guess the 4th of July crowd went home.  I ran 4.4 miles, all on the trails.

Firecracker 5K

 For the first time, I ran the Firecracker 5K in College Station this morning.  The course was relatively flat and was all concrete walkways and streets through the Texas A & M campus.  It was non-competitive with 385 finishers.  I finished in a slow 53:57 (gun time).  My chip did not get read at the start line, so my chip time would probably be just over 53 minutes.

Rare early morning run

 I had a doctor's appointment at 9:30 this morning and a family outing to Houston at 10:30 a.m.  So, I ran at 6:50 a.m.,1 mile at the track and 2.2 around the campus, for a total of 3.2.  

Sunday Night 5K

 As usual for the first Sunday of the month, I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands this evening.  Finished in 49:57.

Stu's Country Mile 5K

 I ran Stu's Country Mile 5K in Centerville this morning - for the 27th consecutive time.  I finished in 51 something and was 3rd place in the 70 and over age group.  The results have not been published, but I think there were 4 of us in that age group.  I always get to visit with a lot of good friends at this race.  This was my 39th race this year and 1,335th since I started racing.

 I made it to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.4 miles on the trails and roads.  Hot!  That gives me 105.2 miles for the month of June and 661.1 for 2023, 8.2 miles less than at this same point last year.

Millican Summer Series 5K Trail Run #3

 I ran race 3 of the Millican Summer Series 5K (actually 3.3 miles) in Millican this evening.  I finished in 58:50 and was 1st of 1 in the 81 and older age group.

Polish Pickle 5K

 I ran the Polish Pickle 5K in Bremond this morning for the 27th straight year (no race in 2020).  I finished in 52:03, my slowest by far.  There were only 2 of us over 80 and I got 2nd place in that age group.  I never walk a step during a race, but am running awfully slow.  It was hot today, but it is always hot for the Polish Pickle.  Below is my history for this race:

 I ran the weekly Fass Brewery 5K in Conroe this evening.  It was much warmer that when I ran it 2 weeks ago.  I finished in 51:20, about 3 minutes slower than before.  After the run, I had a beer and visit with my good friend, Dr. John Slate.

 It was 100 degrees this evening when I met up with the group at the park.  I ran 3.7 miles, mostly on the trails.

 It was a little cooler this afternoon when I went to the park to run.  Down from 99 yesterday to 98 today.  I got in 3.3 miles on the trails.

4 @ 99

 I did not get out to the park until almost 5 this evening.  I ran 4 miles on the trails with the temperature at 99 degrees (according to my truck thermometer).  I saw no one else - or critters - on the trails.  Probably too hot for both.

No Label Brewing 5K

 For for first time, I ran the No Label Brewing 5K in Katy this morning.  Very hot, even for a 5K.  They had just under 700 runners, so it was a pretty big race.  Got visit with a lot of good friends..  I finished in 48:41, 7 seconds behind the first place winner in the 80 and over age group.

Late morning trails

 I made it out to the park late this morning and ran 3.2 miles on the trails.

Millican Summer Series 5K Trail Run #2

 I drove the 51 miles over to Millican this evening for race number 2 of the Millican Summer Series 5K (actually 3.3 miles) Trail Run.  Hot, but no horse fly attacks.  I finished in  1:01:28, a couple minutes slower than 2 weeks ago.  I tripped and fell once and it probably took 2 minutes to get to a tree to pull myself up.

Mid-afternoon

 I attended an U. S. Army birthday party at the Veteran's Museum in Huntsville at noon, so I did not get out to the park until mid-afternoon, when it was good and hot.  Got in 3.5 miles on the roads.

Getting hot

 It is getting in the high 90's now and the forecast is for 100 and higher for 11 days  in a row starting this Thursday.  I prefer to run in cooler weather, but as a streaker, I've learned to tolerate the weather.  I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.6 miles, mostly on the trails.

Roads

 I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.3 miles on the roads.

Sunday afternoon at the park

I had to wait in line for a while to get into the park this afternoon and there were a lot of people, and at least one biting horsefly, on the trails.  I got in 4.6 miles, with my first horsefly bite at Huntsville State Park this year. 

Greyhound 5K

 I ran the Greyhound 5K in the small town of Kosse this morning.  It's 90 miles northwest of Huntsville.  This was my 11th time for running this race.  The road has deteriorated and is really rough, oil, gravel, asphalt, protruding rocks, etc.  I managed to stay upright for the whole race, but my time was slow, 54:35.  I was the only runner over 80, so I was first in my age group.

Back to the park

 After a couple mid-week days running elsewhere, I returned to Huntsville State Park late this morning.  Got in 3.4 miles on the trails and roads.

Fass Brewery 5K

 I made 2 trips down to Conroe today.  First thing this morning, I drove down for a skin doctor appointment at 9 a.m.  This evening, I drove down to run the Fass Brewery 5K in downtown Conroe at 7 p.m.  I arrived about 6:30 and it was raining and lightning.  They delayed the start until about 7:10 and the storm had passed on.  I finished in 48:18. 

Global Running Day 4.1-Mile Run

 I went down to The Woodlands this evening and ran the non-competitive Global Running Day 4.1-Mile Run put on by The Woodlands Marathon.  The course was the concrete walkway along the waterway. I finished in 1:12:45.  Got to visit with some good friends.

Group night

 This was Tuesday group night at the park.  Got in 3.8 miles on the trails and roads.

 Early this afternoon, I got in 3.7 miles on the trails and roads at the state park.

Sunday Night 5K

 I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands this evening and finished in 49:08.  This was my 138th time for running this race and my 30th race this year.

Spindle Tree 5K Parkrun

 I ran the Spindle Tree Parkrun in Magnolia this morning in my slowest time ever in this race.  Finished in 53:45.

Beat up

 After that trail run in Millican last night, I felt a little beat up today.  However, I did make it to the park early this afternoon.  Got in 3.2 miles on the trails, with no biting horse flies.

Millican Summer Series 5K

 I ran the Millican Summer Series 5K Trail Run in Millican this evening.  It is the first in a series of 6 races.  According to my GPS, the course is 3.3 miles and very technical.  I ran all 6 the last 2 years and never encountered a biting horse fly.  I got bit several times this evening.  Huge black flies and they hurt.  Anyway, I finished in 59:08 and was 1st of 1 in the 80 and over age group.

Wrapping up May

 I ran 4 miles on the trails at the park this afternoon.  That gives me 109.2 miles for the month of May;  555.9 miles for 2023.

Regular Tuesday

 After a busy holiday weekend, it was back to a regular Tuesday.  I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.7 miles on the trails and roads.

Long day

 I hosted our club's annual Memorial Day 5K & 1-Mile at my house this morning.  So, I was up very early marking the course and getting everything set up.  We ended up with about 70 runners and I took photos during the race.  After all the post-race work, including putting all the equipment back in the storage bin, I finally got to the park mid-afternoon for a run.  Got in 4 miles on the trails.

Busy day

 I had a lot of family visiting today, but I managed to get in 4.1 miles on the trails at the park late this morning.  Then, I worked on preparation for the annual Memorial Day race at my house tomorrow morning.

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Parkrun in Magnolia this morning and finished in 49:41, not one of my better times, but better than last week.

 I had a busy day with yard work, but I got in 3.2 miles on the trails at the park late this Friday morning.

 I felt sluggish this evening, so I only ran 3.1 miles this evening on the trails and roads at the park.

Rare deer

 Years ago, we use to encounter deer on the trails all the time.  However, in the last few years, we rarely seen them.  Early this afternoon, I met a doe on the trail during my 3.4-mile run on the trails.  I have not seen an armadillo on the trail in years.  I remember one year, I saw one or more virtually every day.

Storm

 We had a heavy rain storm this afternoon, but all was okay for the run at the park this evening.  Got in 4 miles, mostly on the trails.

Trails are drying out

 After a week or so without rain, the trails at the state parking are drying out.  No mud and sandy in places.  Went there at noon today and ran 3.3 miles on the trails.

Sunday at the park

 After church and lunch today, I went to the park and ran 4.7 miles on the trails.

Mindy Moses Memorial 5K

 I ran the Mindy Moses Memorial 5K in Bellville this morning.  I finished in a slow 53.13 and was 2nd of 2 in the 70 and over age group.  I was 75th of 108 participants, so there were a lot of walkers behind me.  The overall female and male winners both came back on the course and ran in with me for the last 3/4 mile.

Easy Friday

 Since I have a race tomorrow (normal Saturday), I took it easy today.  Got in 3.2 miles on the trails at the park.

Thursday with the group

 As usual for Thursdays, I met up with the group at the park this evening.  Got in 3.6 miles, all on the trails.

Warm and humid

 It was warm (80's) and humid when I went to the park this afternoon to run.  Got in 4.6 miles on the trails.  Even though it has not rained for the last 3 days, the trails are muddy in some places.

 With today's 4-mile run on the trails at the park, I went over 500 miles for 2023.

 I have not been on a  treadmill for years and the most I was ever able to run on one was 1 mile.  It was storming all morning and was suppose to continue through the afternoon.  We had a family gathering for later this afternoon.  My only option was to go to Iron Works and run on a treadmill.  I had to get the attendant to show me how to operate the thing.  So, I ran 3.2 miles  Seemed like an eternity.

Spindle Tree 5K Parkrun

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Parkrn in Magnolia this morning.  There was a lot of rain in the area this morning and a little during the race.  As I drove home up I-45, the rain was especially heavy.  According to my watch, I finished in just over 50 minutes.  When the results were posted online, my time was shown as 42:55.  I emailed them about it and they are suppose to fix it.  In any case, this was my 25th race of 2023.  By this time last year, I also had completed 25 races.

Friday on the trails

 It was hot and humid early this afternoon.  I got in 3.2 miles on the trails at the park.

Start of year 3

 I ran 3.4 miles on the trails and roads at the park this evening.  That's day 1 of streak year number 3.  I'm 3,936 on the world streak list of 4,322.  It's a slow move up on the list.  So far as I can tell, I am the 3rd oldest streaker in the world.  So, maybe if I can hang in there long enough, I can move up on that list.

2-Year Streak

 I ran 3.4 miles on the roads and trails at the state park this afternoon, about half of it in a light rain.  Today completes 2 years on my current running streak.

New shoes

 I put on new shoes today and ran 3.2 miles on the trails and roads at the park this evening.  I got 83 days of running on my old pair of shoes.  I do not remember exactly what I paid for them, but it comes out to  be over $1 per day.  Running is expensive, but if it results in better health, it is worth it.

Snake #2

 I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 4 miles, about half on the trails and half on the roads.  I encountered my 2nd snake of the season.  Another 18-inch copperhead, stretched across the trail.

Sunday Night 5K

 I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands tonight - for the 137th time.  I finished in 48:13 and got to visit with some good friends.  The first Sunday Night 5K I ran was on June 14, 2009 and I finished in 34:41.

Spindle Tree 5K Parkrun

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Parkrun in Magnolia this morning and finished in 47:03 - and no falls.

Track

 Just to do something different, I went to the track this afternoon and ran 13 laps (3.2 miles).

Unplanned course

 I met up with the group this evening.  As I do on most days at the park, I start running and make up my  course as I go along.  I started on the trails and finished on the roads.  Got in 3.1 miles.

Getting warm

 After some days with the temperature in the 50  and 60's, it was up into the high 80's today.  That means that the biting horse or deer flies will be out at the park any day now.  I got in 4.1 miles on the trails this afternoon.

Half and half

 I ran 3.2 miles at the state park this evening, half on the trails and half on the roads.

40 Years of racing

 I ran my first race on May 1, 1983 - 40 years ago today.  I was a lieutenant colonel, assigned to the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas.  We were the Army's night fighting division, so we trained a lot at night.  The Commanding General decided to put on the Night Fighter's 10K at 3 o'clock in the morning on May 1, 1983.  I had never run that far, but I figured that if I could not make it, I could fall off into  the darkness and no one would see me.  There were 2,500 runners showed up and everyone carried a chemical light.  It looked like a big glowing green worm on the roads in the training area.  I finished in about 1:03:00 and was sore for a week.  That was the start of my racing career,  As of now, I have completed, 1,318 races, with no DNF's (Did Not Finish).  This afternoon, I went to the park and ran 3..4 miles, mostly on the trails.

    

Achy

 I was achy this morning after the hard fall yesterday.  I took some Ibuprohen with lunch and felt better this afternoon.  I went to the park and ran 4.5 miles on the trails.  That gives me 112.1 miles for the entire month of April, compare to 104.6 for April of last year.  My total for 2023 is 449.7 miles.  At this point last year, my total was  455.6.

Spindle Tree 5K Parkrun

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Parkrun in Magnolia this morning.  I really felt sluggish and then tripped about 15 feet from the finish line and hit the asphalt hard.  My left knee took the brunt of it.  So, I got up and crossed the finish line.  My time was 50:10, by far my slowest Spindle Tree 5K.

Turtle

 Late this morning, I ran 3.3 miles at the park, mostly on the trails.  I think for the first time ever, I encountered a large turtle on the trail.  With some exertion, I managed to pass him.

Lots of rain last night

 With lots of rain last night, the trails at the state park were back to where they were a couple weeks ago..  Water and mud in places.  I got in 3.2 miles this evening, but mostly on the roads.  That puts me over 100 miles for the month, with 3 days left in the month.

Around the lake

 Beautiful running weather this afternoon with the temperature in the 50's.  After church and lunch, I went to the park and ran the 6.9-mile course around the lake.

Spring Fling 5K

 I ran our club's annual Spring Fling 5K at Elkins Lake this morning.  It is the hilliest course we have and, as usual, my GPS shows that it is closeer to 3.2 miles.  I finished in 51 something, about a minute slower than last year.

Friday run

 With a race in the morning, I ran my minimum 3.1 miles at the park late this morning, trails and roads.

Twice to the park

 It was suppose to storm this evening when I meet the group at the park, so I ran 3.5 miles at the park this morning.  The storm was a little delayed this evening, so I met up with the group and ran another 1.5 miles.  Total for the day: 5 miles.

 I went out to the park early this afternoon and ran my old 4-mile out and back course on the trails.

 I met up with the group  at the park this evening and ran 3.4 miles on the trails.

Trails have improved

 The trails at the state park are finally drying up after the heavy rains a week ago.  I went to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.2 miles, mostly on the trails.

Later run at the park

 I did not make it out to the park until later this afternoon.  I still had to wait in a long line to get in the gate and there were a lot of people on the trails.  I ran 4.3 miles on the trails and accumulated my first tick in several years.

Different Saturday

 Today was a little different.  Instead of a race, I went to my granddaughter's taekwondo tournament in Conroe this morning and my grandson's flag football game in Huntsville this afternoon.  I got out to the state park late this evening and ran 3.2 miles on the trails and roads, the last mile in a light rain and the last half mile in close lightning.

Friday before a Saturday with no race

 I almost always have a race on Saturday morning, but none tomorrow.  I got in 3.6 miles on the trails at the park this afternoon.  I ran into two ladies who needed some help with the trails.  Got them going in the right direction.  They were members of the Sam Houston State University Rugby Team, so I made sure that I did not get them mad at me.

Insulted

 A biker passed me while I was running trails this evening.  As he passed, he said, "Have a nice hike." It was funny when he crashed after I put a stick in his spokes.  Anyway, I finished my 3.6-mle run.

 I made it out to the park early this afternoon and ran a completely unplanned course on the trails.  It ended up being 3.7 miles.

Trails are still wet in places

 The trails at the park are still muddy, with standing water on the trails in some places.  Whew!  That was a lot of rain a few days ago.  In any case, I ran 3.4 miles this evening, mostly on the trails.

 I ran 3.5 miles on the trails at the park this afternoon.  This was day 700 of my current running streak.

Easter

 Happy Easter.  We had a lot of family and food at the house today.  Later this evening, I broke away and went to the park to run.  I intended to stay on the trails, but some spots were under water after 2 days of heavy rain.  I ended up finishing up on the roads.  Got in 4.1 miles total.

Guns and Hoses 5K

 For the 3rd straight year, I ran the Guns and Hoses 5K in Bellville this morning..   I finished in 46:28, 10 seconds faster than last year.  I was 2nd of 2 in the 70 and over age group.  Last year, the local paper printed a photo of me, and said that at age 80, I finished the 10K in 46:38.  The same reporter was there this morning and I joked about the error.  A 10K in 46:38 really made me look good.  He took photos and interviewed me this morning;  it will be interesting to see what he writes this year.

 I ran again in the rain late this morning.  All 3.1 miles on the roads at the park.

 It stormed last night and rained all day today.  I met up with the group at the park this evening.  It was just me and Jacob.  I ran 3.6 miles on the park roads - in the rain.

 I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands this evening.  Finished in 47:27.

Nacogdoches 10K

 I got up at 3:45 this morning and drove 100 miles in the fog to run the Nacogdoches 10K at 7 a.m.  I finished in 1:39:13, a couple minutes faster than my 10K last Saturday.  I was 3 of 3 in the 70 and over age group.

Snake 1

 I ran 3.1 miles on the trails at the park late this morning.  I encountered my first snake of the season, an 18-inch copperhead crossing the trail.  He (or she) made it across safely.  The distance gives me 115.5 miles for the month of March, 3.1 miles less than March of last year.

Warmer today

 It was warmer today and the flying insects were out at the state park.  I ran 3.3 miles on the trails and roads and was annoyed most of the way..

Tyler Azalea 10K

I drove up to Tyler yesterday and ran the Azalea 10K this morning.  I had problems getting my contacts in this morning and ended up running without them.  Not being able to see clearly probably slowed me down somewhat, but I managed not to trip and fall.  About 2 miles of the course is on red brick streets and they are a tripping hazard.  I finished in 1:41:45, about 5 minutes slower than last year.  I was the only runner over 80, so I was first in my age group.

Waterway

 I drove my wife down to The Woodlands for an appointment this morning.  While there, I ran 3.1 miles on the Waterway.

Felt better

 I felt better today and ran 3.6 miles at the park, mostly on the trails.

 I went to the park early this afternoon, but did not feel well.  Got in a minimum 3.1 slow miles on the trails.

 As usual for Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park this evening.  I ran 3.7 miles, mostly on the trails.  Light misty rain most of the time.

Spring break over

 I went to the park early this afternoon, on the first day after Spring break.  The park was nearly empty.  I ran 3.5 miles and only saw a couple people on the trails.

Club run at the park

 We had our annual 3.5-mile club run at Huntsville State Park this afternoon.  I hiked out to the 1-mile point on the course before the race and took photos of all the runners and gave course directions.  After the last runner, I hiked back to the start, picking up course marking materials along the way.  This evening, I went back to the park and ran 3.2 miles on the trails.

Green Ulra 10K

 For the third straight year, I ran the Green Ultra 10K trail run in Millican this morning.  It was a new course and as usual, it was long.  My GPS showed 6.53 (10K is suppose to be 6.2).  I do not have my official time yet, but it was a little over 2 hours.  In any case, I was the only runner over 80, so I won my age group.

Evening at the park

 I was out of Huntsville most of the day and did not get to the park until about 5 this evening.  With a race tomorrow morning, I cut my run to 3.1 miles.

Early Thursday run

 The group meets at the park on Thursday evening, but it was suppose to be storming.  So, I went out early this afternoon and ran 3.3 miles on the trails.

 I ran a little longer at the park this afternoon.  Got in 5.1 miles on the trails.

Spring break

 It's spring break and the state park is crowded.  At least, there are no more smoldering fires that I can find.  Early this afternoo, I got in 3.7 miles on the trails.

DNS

 DNS is the abbreviation for the race term, Did Not Start.  That was me this morning.  I had my alarm set for 5 a.m. to run The Woodlands 10K this morning.  About 1 a.m., I started getting sick.  I was in and out of the bathroom until 5 a.m.  I was so weak and dehydrated by that point, I turned off the alarm and went back to bed.  Sure hated to miss the race, but I knew it would take some time to get hydrated.  Later this morning, I went out to the park and ran 4.5 miles on the trails.

The Woodlands Marathon Expo

I am running The Woodlands 10K (in conjunction with the marathon) tomorrow.  So, late this morning, I went down to the expo to pick up my packet,  After the expo, I ran 3.3 miles along the waterway.  Before I left, I ran into the race director, who gave me a VIP pass for tomorrow.  That will allow me to park very close to the start line. 

Before the rain

 I got in a 3.4-mile run on the trails at the park this evening before much needed rain this evening.  Maybe it will finally extinguish the smoldering logs.

Still smoking

 They finished the controlled burn at the state park last Friday.  I ran 3.4 miles on the trails this afternoon and still found smoldering logs.

Wrapping up February

 I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.3 miles, mostly on the trails.  That gives me 106.5 miles for the month (average 3.8 miles a day).

Back to the smoky trails

 After two 5K's on concrete this weekend, I made it out to the park this afternoon and ran 4.2 miles on the trails.  There were still smoldering logs in the woods and plenty of smoke.

Darling Dash 5K

 I ran the Darling Dash 5K in Houston this morning.  First time running this race.  It was on the concrete trails along the bayou just west of downtown Houston.  I struggled the first mile.  I think it was the drive up to and from Tyler yesterday.  I felt okay the rest of the race, but my finish time was 48:55.  I was first of one in the 70 and over age group.  This was my 13th race in 2023.

The Woodlands 5K

 I ran The Woodlands 5K this morning and finished in 46:34.  That was good for 3rd of 4 in the 75 and over age group.  This race kicks off The Woodlands Marathon, which is next Saturday.  After returning to Huntsville, I drove up to Tyler to visit a relative in the hospital.  Got back late this evening.

I should have brought marshmallows

 I went to the park late this morning and ran 3.2 miles on the trails.  The entire course was through the burn area.  Many tree stumps and old fallen trees were still burning.  I should have brought marshmallows. 

Last day of the burn

 They were finishing up the burn at the park when I arrived to run with the group.  I wrapped up my knee and ran 3.4 miles on the roads.  I have to go around a fire truck at one point.  Lots of smoke.

As the burn continues

 They are still burning the north and west side of the park.  I went out to the park this afternoon and ran 3.5 miles on the trails in the southeast side.  This was my second day of running without custom orthotics.  I felt a little burning on the bottom of my feet, but northing more.

 They were still conducting the controlled burn at the park today.  The wind shifted a bit, so the smoke was heavier in the area not was not closed.  My new orthotics started coming apart, so I mailed them back to the maker this morning.  I had already thrown my old orthotics away, so this evening I had to run without custom orthotics for the first time in about 30 years.  I ran 3.2 miles on the trails.  I will see how my feet feel in the morning.

Smokey park

 They started a controlled burn at the state park today, so most of the trails were closed.  I ran 3.3 miles on the roads early this afternoon.  The smoke was not too bad

Crowded park

 As I expected on a nice holiday weekend Sunday afternoon, the state park was crowded.  It took me a while to get in the gate.  I ran on some less-traveled trails and got in 3.9 miles.

Law Week 8K

 I ran the Law Week 8K in downtown Houston this morning.  Finished in 1:15:47, about 3 minutes slower than last year.  I was 3rd of 4 in the 80 and over age group.  Got to visit with several good friends and then had lunch with my son in Spring on the way back to Huntsville.

Unplanned trail route

 I went out to the park this afternoon and ran a completely unplanned trail route.  I even ran on a trail that I have not been on for years.  It turned out to be 3.1 miles.

Better

 Today was the last day of taking antibiotics for my sinus infection.  I got to the park a little early to meet up with the group and took off running on the trails.  I felt better than yesterday and ended up with 4.1 miles, all on the trails.

Sluggish run

 I am still trying to recover from the sinus infection and I was particularly tired today.  Plus, I put on a new pair of running shoes out of the box.  I intended to stay on the park roads, but I ended up on the trails.  Slow and sluggish 3.2 miles.

Longer trail run

 With a nice cool and clear Sunday afternoon and antibiotics for my sinus infection, I could not resist a longer trail run at the state park.  Got in 7.3 miles.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run in Magnolia this morning.  I finished in 45:47, about a minute slower than last week.  I was the only one over 80, so I won my age group.

Sinus infection

 I developed a fever last night and this morning, so I went to the doc late this morning.  As I expected, he diagnosed it as a sinus infection and prescribed a couple pills.  I went to the park later this afternoon and ran 3.6 miles, mostly on the trails.  No problem with foot pain.  Am still not sure what that was yesterday.

Made it another day

 I was doing light work in my yard this afternoon and suddenly developed sharp pains in the front of my left foot.   I have no idea where that came from.  I met up with the group at the park this evening.  The first mile and a half was very painful, but the pain eased up after that.  For a while, it made me forget about the sinus problem.  I finished up with 3.2 miles on the trails.

Fighting sinus issues

 I have been fighting sinus issues this week.  I am allergic to something blowing around.  I had the same problem 13 months ago and it turned into a sinus infection and positive COVID test.  However, us streakers do it anyway.  I got in 3.4 miles on the trails and roads at the park late this morning.

 After a couple days of road racing, I returned to Huntsville State Park early this afternoon.  The trails were really beat down after the Rocky Raccoon 100 this weekend.  I was a little tired from 3 races this weekend, but I managed to get in 3.4 miles on the roads and trails.

Texas 10 Series Sienna 5-Miler & Sunday Night 5K

 I got up at 4:45 this morning to drive about 100 miles down to Missouri City to run the Texas 10 Series Sienna 5-Miler.  Great running weather and a lot of good friends there.  I finished in 1:15:08 and was second of 2 in the 70 and over age group.  After the drive back, a shower, a nap and yard work, I drove down to The Woodlands to run the Sunday Night 5K.  I finished in 46:41.

Spindle Tree 5K Park Run

 I went down to Magnolia early this morning and ran the Spindle Tree 5K Park Run.  Finished in 44:50.

Nice weather for a change

 It was warmer and sunny today.  Nice running weather.  I got to the park early this afternoon and ran 3.7 miles on the roads and trails.

Warmed up to 38

 It was a few degrees warmer today and the difference was noticeable.  I met up with the group this evening and ran 3.7 miles on the trails and roads.

Another cold run

 It was 36 degrees when I went to the park this afternoon to run.  I ran 3.7 miles on the trails and roads, partly in a light rain.  A couple stopped me in the camping area and said, "didn't we see you running before when we were camping here?"  Probably so.

Still cold

 It was 33 degrees when I met up with the group at the park this evening.  Got in 3.5 miles on the trails and roads.  That gives me 115.6 miles for the month of January, compared to 125.2 for January of last year.

Just cold

 There was no rain when I went to the park to run early this afternoon, but it was 36 degrees - just cold.  Got in 4 miles, mostly on the roads.

Tried to beat the rain

 We were suppose to have heavy storms this afternoon, so I went out to the park early this morning to run.  I ran 3.2 miles on the roads and trails, but got caught in a heavy rain.  It was probably more rain than we had this afternoon.

Hog Wild 10K Trail Run

 I drove an hour and a half up to Bremond this morning to run the Hog Wild 10K Trail Run (6.4 miles according to my GPS) on a private ranch.  It was suppose to rain, but luckily not a drop.  I finished in 1:54:34 and was first place in the 80 and over age group (no competition).  Got to visit with some good friends after the race.

 I just got my computer back from the shop, so I have some catching up to do, like Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Ran at the park all 3 days; 4.1, 3.2 and 3.9 miles, respectively.

New Orthotics

 After several years, my old custom orthotics wore out.  I got my new ones in the mail yesterday and started running in them today.  I intended to run 7 miles on the trails.  At about 2.5, I started getting some unusual pain in my feet.  I circled back and ended my run at 4.9.  I'm okay, just have to break them in like a new pair of shoes.

Frost Your Fanny 5K

This morning, I ran our club's Frost Your Fanny 5K here in Huntsville at the hilly Spring Lakes Sub-division.  It was cold, but the rain held off.  I finished in 47:15.

 I ran the Spindle Tree Park Run 5K in Magnolia this morning and finished in 48:10 (1st of 1 in the 80-84 age group).  This was my 1,300th race since my first race on May 1, 1983.

Texas 10 Series Bridgeland 5-Miler

I ran the Texas 10 Series Bridgeland 5-Miler in Cypress.  A third straight day of getting up early.  Just before the race start, there were some nearby thunderstorms and it rained a little during the first mile.  I ran most of the race with a friend in my age group.  We had a nice visit.  I finished in 1:17:59 and was 3rd of 3 in the 70 and over age group.

I ran the Spindle Tree Park Run 5K in Magnolia this morning and finished in 45:23, my best time for this race.  So that sets a new age group record for this race, which has been held 51 times.  That is not saying much, since I am the only runner in the 80 and over age group to run the race. What was more significant today was that my good friend, Vincent Attanucci, completed his 20-year running streak at the race.  We had a chance to visit after the race. 

Just before dark

 I got up early this morning and drove to Tyler for a funeral.  I got back this evening in time to get in 3.2 miles on the trails at the park.

Half and half

 I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.3 miles, half on the trails and half on the roads.

 It was sunny and in the 60's when I arrived at the park to run this afternoon.  Got in 4 miles on the trails.

 As usual for Tuesday, I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 3.2 miles on the trails.

Two runs

 Late this morning, I went to the park to run trails.  Just as soon as I started, it began raining and lightning in the area.  It got in 1.1 miles and went home to watch the Tulane-USC football game,  Then, I went to Kate Barr Ross Park and ran 2 miles on the roads.  Just as I finished, it started raining.  My total run for the day was 3.1 miles.

Sunday Night 5K

 We had a club run in Huntsville this afternoon,  Since I was a little beat up from the trail race yesterday, I volunteered to take photos of the race.  After the club race, I went down to The Woodlands and ran the Sunday Night 5K.  I finished in a slow 50:57.
