2019 in Review
As far as my running goes, 2019 was not a good year. I started the year with my right arm in a sling from rotator cuff surgery in December. Running in the sling screwed up my left hip and had to get cortisone shots to fix that. In March, I got my first ride in ambulance to ER due to dehydration from a 10-mile race. In the spring, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthristis and then Afib. I had a heart monitor device implanted in my chest and was ultimately diagnosed with sleep apnea, which caused the Afib. Now, I have to sleep with a CPAC machine with cold air blowing up my nose all night. Then, I tore the rotator cuff in my other shoulder and got a cortisone shot for that. Then, a bone spur in my right heel caused two bouts of inflammation; cortisone fixed that too. Right now, I have inflammation in my big toe joint. I still have not decided on running the Half Marathon in Kingwood tomorrow morning. The good news is that I kept my streak alive in 2019. I reached 10 years on October 18. My race count was down from an average of 67 per year for the last few years. I only ran 49 races in 2019 (3-10 milers, 1 Quarter Marathon, 4-10K's, 4-5 Milers, 1-8K, 35-5K's and 1-1 Miler). 2020 will be better. Happy New Year.

Late run
After church this morning, outing at the ice skating rink in The Woodlands and dinner in Huntsville with visiting family, I finally got to run at 8:30 tonight. I went to the track and ran laps.

Park instead of 5K
I got up early this morning, but decided not to drive down to The Woodlands for the 5K. Instead, I went to the park and ran 3 miles on the trails. I iced my heel when I got home.

Mechanical work
I replaced the front brakes on my wife's car this afternoon. This was my first time a a while doing mechanical work. I ended up plenty tired and dirty, but saved a few bucks. After a good shower, I went to the track and ran laps.
Thursday, December 26, 2019
Group run
As usual, Thursday is group run day at the park. The group today was just me and Glen. I ran 2 miles on the roads.
Wednesday, December 25, 2019
Merry Christmas
I had a house full of visiting family today, but I slipped out this afternoon and ran 2 miles on the roads at the park. The heel is much better, but I still iced it when I got home.
Tuesday, December 24, 2019
Another mile day
Even though the inflammation in my right heel is much better, I ran another mile at the track this afternoon and then iced it.
Monday, December 23, 2019
Day 2
This was my 2nd day of icing my heel, taking Ibuprohen and running a mile at the track. The treatment seems to be working. My plan is to run a 5K on Saturday and a half marathon on January 1.
Sunday, December 22, 2019
Darn
Last month, I had inflammation in the back of my right heel. An xray revealed a bone spur and a floating bone causing the inflammation. The podiatrist gave me a cortisone shot and within a few days the inflammation went away - until late last night. Guess the trail run yesterday was too much. I have been icing it today, taking Ibuprohen, and inserted a gel pad in the heel of my running shoe. I ran an easy mile at the track this afternoon. I will continue the treatment for a few days and see how it goes.
Saturday, December 21, 2019
Around the lake
I went to the state park this morning for a 7 a.m. run with a group, mostly from the Houston area. I ran around the lake, which is 6.9 miles.
Friday, December 20, 2019
Friday
Normally, I run laps on Friday with a race on Saturday. No race tomorrow, but I plan to run trails with a large group. So, late this morning, I went to the park and ran 2.4 miles on the trails.
Thursday, December 19, 2019
Another 2.2
At the group run at the park this evening, I ran 1.1 miles on the trails and another 1.1 on the roads.
Wednesday, December 18, 2019
10 years and 2 months
It is hard to believe that it has been 2 months since I hit 10 years on my streak. Even though I run slow, time goes by fast. I got out to the park late this afternoon and ran 2 miles on the roads.
Tuesday, December 17, 2019
Group run at the park
As we have done every Tuesday and Thursday for over 30 years, the group met up at the state park this evening to run. I ran 2 miles, half on the trails and half on the roads.

Hot Sunday afternoon
It was 78 degrees this afternoon when I arrived at the park to run. Got in 6 miles on the trails.
Saturday, December 14, 2019
St. Nick's 5K
I drove over to College Station this morning and ran the St. Nick's 5K. Did not realize that it was changed to non-timed and non-competitive. According to my watch, I finished in 41:34. HEALTH UPDATE: I have not mentioned my Rhuematoid Arthritis (RA) and Afib for a while and I only bring it up as it affects my running. The only thing I am now taking for the Afib is a blood thinner. After a number of tests, they determined that my Afib is caused by sleep apnea. Yesterday, I picked up a machine for the sleep apnea. I think they refer to it as a CPAP. I started using it last night and was awake off and on all night. I am not sure I can use to wearing a thing over my head and cold air blowing non-stop into my nostrils all night. Maybe, if I keep wearing it, the Afib will go away. I'm also not sure about the RA. I am taking a pill for that. Either the pill is working or my sore and swollen hands and body soreness has just gone away. I just wonder if the sleep apnea is related to the RA diagnosis. For now, I just have to get use to the CPAC. Maybe it will make me run faster.

Jingle Jog
I went down to The Woodlands tonight to run the annual non-competitive Jingle Jog, put on by Fleet Feet. It was suppose to be a 3-mile course from the Fleet Feet store. I missed a turn somewhere and ended up running 3.5 miles in 48:29. This included waiting for traffic at a couple busy intersections. Had a good time, anyway. Some of my family participated and got to visit with a lot of friends.
Wednesday, December 11, 2019
Trails and roads
After Iron Works this evening, I ran 3 miles at the park, 1.1 on the trails and the rest on the roads.
Tuesday, December 10, 2019
Cold and rainy
It rained most of today and the temp was in the 40's. No one else showed up at the park this evening for our 4:30 run, so I ran 2 miles on the roads and added another day to my streak.
Monday, December 9, 2019
Sunday, December 8, 2019
Visiting family
I had visiting family today, but I broke away this afternoon and ran 3.5 miles on the trails at the state park.
Saturday, December 7, 2019
Reindeer 5K
For the 6th straight year, I ran the Reindeer 5K in Lufkin this morning. After being run on courses of various distances at the zoo, it was moved to the convention center in downtown this year. According to my GPS, the course was accurate and I ran 39:27. I was the only one in the 71 and over age group. Nice running weather and I got a chance to visit with a lot of good friends from Lufkin. Also got to meet Krystal Riley (inaskirt.com). She interviewed me several weeks ago and included it on her website (Episode 34).

I met up with the group this evening at the park and ran 1.1 miles on the trails and another 1.1 on the roads.
Wednesday, December 4, 2019
Avenues 5K course
With the state park closed today for squirrel hunting, I ran the very hilly Avenues 5K course in town.
Tuesday, December 3, 2019
Park closed this evening
The state park closed at 5 pm today for squirrel hunting and will reopen at noon this Thursday. So, I went out to the park late this morning and ran 2.2 miles, half on the trails and half on the roads. I warned all the squirrels I could.
Monday, December 2, 2019
Back on the trails
It was a little late before I got to the state park this evening, but I got in 2.2 miles on the trails before it go dark.
Sunday, December 1, 2019
Texas 10 Series Conroe 10 Miler
I ran the Texas 10 Series Conroe 10 Miler this morning. Beautiful sunny skies and low 50's. Could not ask for better weather. I finished in 2:29:45, about 3 minutes slower than last year. I had to make a pit stop, so that cost me a few minutes. I was 5th of 5 in the 70 and over age group.
Saturday, November 30, 2019
Leftover Turkey 5K
I ran our club's Leftover Turkey 5K this morning. It was rather warm and humid and the course is nothing but hills. I finished in 46:48, about a minute slower than the same race last year.
Friday, November 29, 2019
Thursday, November 28, 2019
Run Thru the Woods 5-Miler
For the 18th straight year, I ran the Run Thru the Woods 5-Miler in The Woodlands this morning. I finished in 1:10:05 and was 4th of 4 in the 75 & Over age group.
Wednesday, November 27, 2019
Good running weather
Sunny and in the 50's today. I went out to the park late this morning and ran 2.4 miles on the trails. Good day for running more, but I have a race tomorrow.
Tuesday, November 26, 2019
Podiatrist appointment
A week ago, my podiatrist gave me a cortisone shot in my right heel. I had a followup appointment with him this afternoon. I still have some tenderness, but it is much better. No real pain when I am running. I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 2.7 miles, 1.1 on the trails and the rest on the roads.
Monday, November 25, 2019
Trails and roads
It was nearly dark by the time I got to the park to run this evening. So, I ran 1.1 miles on the trails and finished with 1.1 on the road back to my truck.
Sunday, November 24, 2019
Had to wait in a long line
In between football games this afternoon, I went out to the state park to run. There was a long line of cars backed up at the gate. They finally opened a second gate and I finally got in. I ran 2.4 miles on the trails.
Saturday, November 23, 2019
Conroe Turkey Trot 5K
I like these 9 a.m. starts. I slept in and went down to the Conroe Turkey Trot. I finished in 41:28, which is actually my be 5K time since last spring. Nice to run without heel pain. The upper age group was 60 and over, so I was far from placing.
Friday, November 22, 2019
And another
This was my third straight day of short runs, so that my heel will recover from the cortisone shot. I ran laps at the track this morning.
Thursday, November 21, 2019
Another short run
I met up with the group at the park this evening. While they ran 3 miles, I ran 1 easy mile+ back and forth on the flat roads near the Nature Center. I plan another short run tomorrow and then a 5K race on Saturday. The heel feels much better, but I know I have to take it easy for a few days after a cortisone shot.
Wednesday, November 20, 2019
Kept my agreement with the doc
I kept my agreement with the podiatrist and ran one easy mile at the track tonight. With the cortisone shot yesterday, my heel felt much better.
Tuesday, November 19, 2019
A talk about streaking
Knowing that I had an appointment with the podiatrist this afternoon and a cortisone shot was a possibility, I went to the park this morning with my inflamed right heel and ran 2.4 miles on the trails. This afternoon at the podiatrist's office, xrays showed that I have a spur and a floating bone in my right heel. I got a very painful cortisone injection and was then told I would be in a boot for a few days and no running. The doctor and I then had a talk about streaking. I left with no boot and the understanding that I could run a slow and easy one mile at the track for the next couple of days.
Monday, November 18, 2019
Late run
I was tied up at the house all day and did not get a chance to run until after dark this evening. I worked out a Iron Works and then ran laps at the track. I have an appointment with a podiatrist tomorrow to look at the inflammation in my right heel.

Foregoing the La Porte Half Marathon
Months ago, I signed up for the La Porte Half Marathon, which is tomorrow morning. While I have been struggling somewhat in recent months with the RA and Afib, the inflamed right heel is still inflamed and hurting after 19 days. I have been treating it and maybe it has improved somewhat. I have debated with myself about running the half anyway, but I may really screw up the heel. My plan is to see if I can get an appointment with a podiatrist next week. My regular doctor thought it was gout in an odd place, but gout would have gone away by now. So, I will skip the half tomorrow. In the meantime, I went to the state park late this morning and ran 4 miles on the trails.
Friday, November 15, 2019
Ran short of time
Nice running weather today. Sunny and cool. However, I got busy today and ran short of time. I ran 2 miles on the track late this afternoon.
Thursday, November 14, 2019
Wednesday, November 13, 2019
Late run
By the time I left Iron Works and got to the park, it was nearly dark. I ran 2 miles on the park roads and it was totally dark by the time I finished. Of course, there was hardly any traffic on the park roads.
Tuesday, November 12, 2019
Cold
I spent much of the afternoon operating a race clock for a series of runs put on by the Alpha Omega Academy here in Huntsville. Fun, but standing around in the cold was a challenge. I finished in just enough time to make it to the park for a run with the group. Ran 2 miles on the roads.
Monday, November 11, 2019
Weather change
It started raining this afternoon and getting much colder. Seeing that in the forecast, I ran in town this morning. My heel is still very sore, so I only ran 1.3 miles. I may have to see a podiatrist if it does not improve.
Sunday, November 10, 2019
Crowded house
We had a crowded house yesterday. In fact, 20 people slept at my house last night. Great having all my kids and their families together. Some were still here this afternoon when I slipped out and ran 3 miles on the trails at the park.
Saturday, November 9, 2019
Family all together
Today was the first time since the mid-80's that all six of our kids have been together at the same time. With the spouses and 9 grand kids, the house is full. I did slip away this morning for a 2.4-mile run on the trails at the park.
Friday, November 8, 2019
Heel pain getting worse, again
The inflammation in my right heel is getting worse, again, just when I thought it was gradually going away. I'll have to work on it, I guess. I have a house full of visiting family, but I went to the park this afternoon and got in 2 miles on the park roads.
Thursday, November 7, 2019
Rainy afternoon
It rained part of the afternoon and was much cooler this evening. I met up with the group and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Wednesday, November 6, 2019
Tuesday, November 5, 2019
Orthopedic Surgeon appointment
I had an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon this afternoon to check my sore left shoulder. I had major rotator cuff surgery on this shoulder back in the 90's. Looks like some of it came undone. He gave me a choice of shoulder replacement or occasional cortisone shots. At least for now, I chose the shots and he gave me the first one. Then, I went to the park and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Monday, November 4, 2019
New shoes
I put on a new pair of running shoes today and ran 1.5 miles on the park roads to break them in.
Sunday, November 3, 2019
Texas 10 Series Katy 5-Miler
I overslept this morning, but made it down to Katy just in time to run the Texas 10 Series Katy 5-Miler. Cool and sunny. I finished in 1:12:53, about 2 minutes faster than Cypress 3 weeks ago. I was 3rd of 3 in the 70 and over age group.
Saturday, November 2, 2019
Alex's 5K
I got up early this morning and drove down to southeast Houston to run the Alex's 5K. Nice cold running weather. I finished in 43:39, about 3 minutes slower than last year. My foot was still a little sore, but I think the RA is slowing me down about a minute per mile. I got to visit with a lot of "old" friends. In fact, there were so many that I was 4th of 5 in the 75-79 age group.
Friday, November 1, 2019
Friday short run
With two races this weekend, I ran 1-mile+ on Veterans Memorial Parkway this morning.
Thursday, October 31, 2019
Annual physical
I limped into my doctor's office this morning for my annual physical. He thought I was in pretty good shape, except for my sore heel, RA, Afib and a sore left shoulder, which I am having checked an orthopedic surgeon next week. He prescribed some pills for the sore heel. I picked them up from the drug store this evening, but have not taken any yet. This afternoon, my heel seemed much better. Still sore, but I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening without much pain.
Wednesday, October 30, 2019
And, another short run
The swelling and pain in my heel continued today, so I ran 1.3 miles on the park roads this evening. I have my annual physical exam tomorrow morning. Maybe the doc can fix it.
Tuesday, October 29, 2019
Continuing
My foot was about the same today. I ran 1.1 miles on the roads at the park. The first quarter mile was tough.
Monday, October 28, 2019
Paid the price
I guess I paid the price for running a 5K yesterday on a sore heel. When I woke up this morning, my whole foot was sore and swollen. I stayed off it most of the day and went to the park this evening and ran a little over 1 mile on the trails. It was ugly, but I got it done.
Sunday, October 27, 2019
Sweat IV Vets 5K
My heel was still very sore this morning, but I decided to go ahead and try to run the Sweat IV Vets 5K in Humble, which I signed up for many months ago. By the time I parked and walked around a bit at the race site (Harris Co. Sheriff's Training Center), my heal was tolerable. Perfect running weather and a perfectly flat and smooth asphalt course. After a half mile or so into the race, my heel was not a problem (probably numb). I finished in 44:12, almost 5 minutes slower than the same race last year. Must by my RA. In any case, I was first in the 70 and over age group (only one). My son, who lives in Houston, was there as my support crew, so that made it a good time. By the time I got home, the heel was as sore as ever. I guess it will have to run its course.
Saturday, October 26, 2019
Streak challenge
Late last night, I started getting pain in my right heel. It was extremely sore this morning and all day. I realized that it was probably gout. When I had it in the past, it was always in my big toe joint. I have been taking a pill every day for years to avoid it. However, one of the pills that the doctor told me to quit taking daily was that pill. So, I spent all day, icing it, rubbing it with icy/hot, putting icy/hot pads on it and taking some of the pills that I had quit taking. It was a challenge to get up at 7 p.m. tonight and go run. I went to the track and ran one slow painful mile. It feels a little better tonight.
Friday, October 25, 2019
Nice running weather
A frant came through last night. By this afternoon, the rain stopped and the temp was in the low 50's. I ran 3 miles on the trails at the park.
Thursday, October 24, 2019
Ditto on the run
After Iron Works, I met up with the group at the park and ran the same course as yesterday. 2.2 miles, half on the trails and half on the roads.
Wednesday, October 23, 2019
Cardiologist appointment
I had an appointment with the cardiologist this morning. The results from my chest scan last week were negative. In other words, no blockage that would be causing the Afib. Over this last weekend, I slept in an apparatus that checks for sleep apnea, which can also cause Afig. Those results are not back yet. The doc did eliminate one of the medications that I had started taking to reduce my pulse rate. Maybe that will help. Anyway, after working out at Iron Works this evening, I ran 2.2 miles at the park, about half on the trails and half on the roads.
Tuesday, October 22, 2019
Went back to Iron Works today
Due to RA issues and pain in my left shoulder, I have not been to Iron Works for the last week. I went there this afternoon for a light workout and then a 2-mile road run at the park. Cardiologist appointment tomorrow.
Monday, October 21, 2019
Park roads
The RA is slowing me down, but I got in 2 miles on the park roads this afternoon. Running day 10 years and 3 days.
Sunday, October 20, 2019
Short trail run
Busy day, but I went to the park this afternoon and ran a 1.4-mile loop on the trails.
Saturday, October 19, 2019
Huntsville Quarter Marathon
I ran our club's annual Huntsville Quarter Marathon (6.55 miles) this morning. The race is less than a mile from my house, so it is nice to sleep in before a race. I finished in 1:39:52, right at 6 minutes slower than last year. I was the only one in the 75-79 age group, so I got first.

Getting close
After my 2-mile road run at the park this evening, I have 3 more days to reach 10 years on my streak.
Monday, October 14, 2019
Back to summer
After it got down into the 40's a few days ago, it was back into the 80's today. I ran 2 miles on the roads at the park late this afternoon, about half in a light rain.
Sunday, October 13, 2019
Texas 10 Series Cypress 5-Miler
I got up at 4:30 this morning to make it down to Cypress for the Texas 10 Series 5-Miler. I was originally signed up for the 10-mile race, but switched to the 5. The weather was perfect, 50's and low humidity. When I finished the 5-mile loop, I was tempted to go around again. I finished in 1:14:23 and was 5th of 5 in the 70 and over age group.
Saturday, October 12, 2019
Saturday trip to Tyler
With a race tomorrow morning, I ran 1.3 miles on the roads in town this morning. Then I made a trip to Tyler this afternoon for a family affair and got back late this evening.
Friday, October 11, 2019
Cold and rainy
We suddenly went from summer to winter. A storm came through overnight and the temperature was in the high 40's this afternoon. I ran 2.4 miles on the trails at the park this afternoon, most of it in the rain. One week to 10 years.
Thursday, October 10, 2019
More testing
More testing today, in relation to the heart issue. Had a CTA (???) scan on my chest. I am not sure when I will get the results. This evening, I met up with the group at the park and ran 2 miles on the roads.
Wednesday, October 9, 2019
Tuesday, October 8, 2019
Cardiologist appointment
I had an appointment with the cardiologist this morning. I have to go to the hospital on Thursday for a scan. In the meanwhile, they are monitoring my heart via the thing embedded in my chest. Then, they removed the five staples from the incision in my chest. My plan is to run the Texas 10 Series 5-miler in Cypress next Sunday and the Huntsville Quarter Marathon on October 19. Hopefully, I can get to back to the 10-mile distance by November 3 (Texas 10 Series Katy). I met up with the group this evening and ran 2 miles on the park roads. Ten days to ten years.
Monday, October 7, 2019
Another change in medication
I received a call from my cardiologist's office this morning. They have been monitoring my heart (from the implant in my chest) and found that my heart rate sometimes gets too low. So, they reduced the dosage of the medication I am taking that slows it down. Apparently, the device does not have a GPS, because they did not say anything about how slow I'm running. Anyway, I hope the reduced dosage will result in a corresponding reduction in side effects. I went to the park this evening and ran 2 miles on the roads.
Sunday, October 6, 2019
Wylie and laps
I drove up to Wylie (NE of Dallas) Friday night to visit family for the weekend. The new medicine is worse than the old. I really felt tired, sore and unsteady all weekend. I got a a short 1.2-mile road run in Wiley on Saturday and then ran laps at the track in Huntsville this evening. I was signed up to run the Space City 10-Miler this morning in Houston, but was advised by the doctor not to do, since I ended up the ER last Sunday.
Friday, October 4, 2019
Doctor appointment
I had an appointment with my Rheumatologist this morning. Due to my fatigue and other side effects, he changed my RA medicine. Maybe that will help. Later this afternoon, I went to the park, and despite five staples in my chest, ran 2 miles on the trails. Two weeks to 10 years.
Wednesday, October 2, 2019
Iron Works and the park
I made it back to Iron Works for a workout this afternoon, followed by a 3-mile road run at the park.
Tuesday, October 1, 2019
Tuesday at the park
After errands in The Woodlands and Conroe this afternoon, I ran 2 miles on the state park roads.
Monday, September 30, 2019
Short trail run
After working out at Iron Works this afternoon, I ran 1.4 miles on the trails at the park.
Sunday, September 29, 2019
Texas 10 Series Sienna 10-Miler and my first ride in an ambulance
I got up at 4 this morning to make the drive down to Missouri City for a 7 a.m. start of the Texas 10 Series Sienna 10-miler. Hot, extremely humid, sunny, concrete course and no wind. I took on extra fluids at the aid stations, but struggled to finish. I ran the whole race, but my time was about 20 minutes slower than my worst time in a Texas 10 Series race. While sitting down and trying to hydrate after the race, my vision got blurry and I was approached by an EMT. Then, I threw up all the water that I had taken down. They put me in the ambulance and gave me an IV. While the IV was going, they checked my heart and found it not functioning right (I'm not sure I understood what it was doing or not doing). Anyway, they transported me to the hospital emergency room. More IV's, heart tests and a medication to bring down my heart rate. I was finally released just after 3 this afternoon and got home about 5. Thanks to my friends, Gretchen and Steve for their support, especially to Steve for hanging out at the hospital and driving me back home. It was running streak day 3,633 and 19 days from 10 years.
Saturday, September 28, 2019
Short park run
Late this morning, I went to the park with my wife and 3-year grandson. While they were at the playground, I ran 1.2 miles on the roads. Then, we had a picnic lunch.
Friday, September 27, 2019
Park roads
With staples in my chest (not sure how many), I plan to stay off the trails at the park to avoid the risk of falling. So, this afternoon, I ran 3 miles on the park roads. Ten miles on Sunday will definitely be a challenge. I even started a new pill yesterday, one that keeps my body from rejecting the device (about the size of a thumb drive) they implanted in my chest.
Thursday, September 26, 2019
2-Run day
I had an appointment for more testing at the cardiologist's office early this afternoon, including surgical insertion of a "loop" in my chest to allow remote monitoring of my heart. So, I ran 1.1 miles on Veterans Memorial Parkway late this morning, just in case I was told not to run after the surgery. At the doctor's office, they told me that I could run today. I met up with the group at the park this evening and got in another 2 miles on the park roads.
Wednesday, September 25, 2019
Squeezed in a run
Got busy today and hosted a running club officer meeting at my house this evening. However, I managed to squeeze in a 2-mile road run at the park late this afternoon.
Tuesday, September 24, 2019
Me and Jacob
It was just be and Jacob at the park this evening. I ran 2.5 miles on the trails. Jacob ran 3 and was waiting for me when I finished.
Monday, September 23, 2019
Sunday, September 22, 2019
Trails, again
In between football games this afternoon, I ran 2.4 miles on the trails at the park. Next challenge is a 10-mile race next Sunday.

Change of plans
I was signed up to run a 5K in the Dallas area this morning, but plans changed and I did not make the trip. So, late this morning I went to the park and ran 5 miles on the trails.

Lots of rain in the area
We had a lot of rain in the area today, but little at my house. In fact, part of my normal 2-mile loop around the campus was under water. I went out to the park this afternoon. Traffic on I-45 was backed up and it took me a long time to get to the park. I ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Thursday, September 19, 2019
Another early run to beat the rain
It was suppose to rain this afternoon and evening, so I went out to the park late this morning and ran 2.5 miles on the trails. I did not see anyone on the trails and I broke a lot of spider webs.

9 Years and 11 Months
I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening in a light rain. Today marked 9 years and 11 months on my current running streak. This morning, I had an appointment with the cardiologist. He reviewed the 10 days on a heart monitor, ultra-sound on my heart and all the other tests and concluded that I have Afib, caused in part by a leaky valve. I still have to have more tests done, but starting today, I am on a blood thinner. I have no restrictions on running, but I know that with the RA and Afib and the side effects of the medication, my running will not be like it use to be (not to imply that I was ever fast).

No one else showed up
After working out at Iron Works this evening, I drove through rain getting to the park to meet up with the group. No one else showed up. I ran 2 miles on the park roads and then another 1.1 miles on the trails, for a 5K total.
Monday, September 16, 2019
Park roads
Got caught in some wind and a little rain, but I ran 3 miles on the park roads this evening.
Sunday, September 15, 2019
Back to the park
In between football games this afternoon, I ran 2.4 miles on the trails at the state park.

Gruene Hall 10K
I ran laps at the track yesterday (Friday) before making the 3 1/2-hour drive to New Braunfels to run the Gruene Hall 10K this morning. Had a rough day physically yesterday. I'm not sure if it is the RA, the heart issue or the medications I am taking for both. Of course, the weather was warm in New Braunfels this morning, but with low humidity. This is the 9th straight year I have run this race. I finished in 1:37:23 and was 4th of 4 in the 75-79 age group. This must have been a PW (personal worst) for the 10K distance. Here is my history for this race:
2019 - 1:37:23 (age 78)
2018 - 1:30:48
2017 - 1:26:13
2016 - 1:21:29
2015 - 1:21:31
2014 - 1:18:40
2013 - 1:22:42
2012 - 1:16:17
2011 - 1:16:38 (age 70)
2019 - 1:37:23 (age 78)
2018 - 1:30:48
2017 - 1:26:13
2016 - 1:21:29
2015 - 1:21:31
2014 - 1:18:40
2013 - 1:22:42
2012 - 1:16:17
2011 - 1:16:38 (age 70)

Morning run at the park
I ran 5 miles on the trails at the park late this morning. Ran on some trails that I have not been on for a while and broke up a few spider webs across the trails. This was my 3,615th consecutive day of running.

Could not get to the park
After working out at Iron Works this evening, I headed to the park to meet up with the group. There was a wreck on the southbound side of I-45 and traffic was backed up both on I-45 and the service road. So, I made a U-turn on the service road and went to the track in town. I ran an unplanned route in the avenues, which turned out to be 1.6 miles.
Monday, September 9, 2019
Rain
We finally got a little rain this evening. I left Iron Works this evening to go to the park to run. When I got there, it was lightning and raining. So, I decided to go to the track and run laps. The rain was heavier at the track. I went home and checked my rain gauge; 3/4 inch. Most in about 2 months. By this time, it had quit raining. I went up to Veterans Memorial Blvd. and run a mile +.

Stretching out the distance
With no race this morning, I went out to the park about 11 a.m. and ran 6 miles on the trails.
Mid-Friday afternoon run
I went out to the park in the middle of this Friday afternoon, when it was 100 degrees or so, and ran 2.4 miles on the trails.
Thursday, September 5, 2019
Got to the park early
I arrived at the park ahead of the group this evening. I ran 2 miles on the park roads and another 1.4 on the trails for a total of 3.4.

Park was full
I went out to the state park about 2 this afternoon. About a mile from the gate, they were turning cars around because the park was full. I got up to the turnaround point and the guy told me that the boss told him that I could go in anyway. Guess being a "regular" has its perks. There was plenty of parking at the Nature Center and I ran 3 miles on the park trails. The picnic area must have been packed, because I only saw about 5 people on the trails.
Sunday, September 1, 2019
Sunday Night 5K
I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands this evening - for the 102nd time. I finished in 46:21, exactly 2 minutes slower than last month.
Saturday, August 31, 2019
Crowded park
I went out to run trails at the park late this morning and had to wait in line at the gate for a while. Holiday weekend. I ran 4 miles on the trails.

Thursday, August 29, 2019
Trails, again
I had an appointment this morning for the ultra-sound on my heart. The technician implied that I have an electrical problem and my heart is still skipping beats and they usually fix that with medication or a pacemaker. I turned in the heart monitor and am now free of all the wires. I still have to take the medicine that makes me sleepy until I see the doctor on September 18. In the meantime, I have to take and record my blood pressure and heart rate twice a day and continue my normal routine. Speaking of normal, I went back to the park this evening and ran 2.5 miles on the trails.
Wednesday, August 28, 2019
Late laps
I had to go down to The Woodlands this afternoon and did not get back until later this evening. So, I went to the track and ran laps about 8 p.m.
Tuesday, August 27, 2019
No Lyme disease
I got a call from the doc today to tell me that my Lyme disease test came back negative. Guess that means that I am stuck with the Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis and whatever long term medication comes with that. I have two more days on the heart monitor and get an ultra-sound on the heart this Thursday. In the meantime, I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening. Running streak day 3,600.
Monday, August 26, 2019
Another nap day
This was another day of frequent naps, but I went out to the park late this evening and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Sunday, August 25, 2019
Still tired and sleepy
I am not sure which illness or medication I am on that is causing it, but I still felt tired and sleepy all day. About 6 this evening, I went out to the park and ran 2 miles on the roads.
Saturday, August 24, 2019
Heat Wave 5K
I ran the club's annual Heat Wave 5K in Waterwood (east of Huntsville) this morning. I purposely ran as slow and finished in 47:26. So looking forward to getting these wires off my chest.
Friday, August 23, 2019
Short avenues run
I felt tired and sleepy most of the day, but drove to the track this evening and ran 1.3 miles in the hilly avenues.
Thursday, August 22, 2019
Keeping the streak going
Seven more days of being wired up with a heart monitor. I spent several hours doing yard work today and was tired this evening. I met up with the group and ran 1.5 miles on the park roads.
Wednesday, August 21, 2019
More testing
I talked to my Rheumatologist today and suggested that I be tested for Lyme Disease. I read somewhere that one symptom for Lyme is heart problems. He pointed out that one of the side effects of steroids is an increased heart rate. He reduced my steroids, but sent me to the lab for Lyme testing. I should get the results back in 3 to 5 days. In the meantime, my heart rate is under control and I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening.
Tuesday, August 20, 2019
First full day of hookup completed
I completed my first full day of being hooked up to wires for heart monitoring. I was in HEB this morning and found a wire that had come loose hanging down out of my T-shirt. No one called from what ever company monitors the hook up to see what was going on. Anyway, I met the group at the park this evening and ran 1.5 miles on the park roads. No problem. So far, the streak continues.
Monday, August 19, 2019
Another medical issue
It has been a tough last 6 months or so. Last week, my health insurance provider sent a nurse to my home for an in-home health assessment. The nurse found that my heart was skipping beats and told me to see my doctor. I saw him last Thursday and he referred me to a Cardiologist. So, I took it easy on my runs since Thursday. At my appointment with the Cardiologist this afternoon, they found my resting heart rate to be 144 (normally in the low 50's). They ran some blood tests and put me on medication to bring the heart rate down. I go back in 10 days for an ultra-sound on my heart. In the meantime, I have to wear a heart monitor (3 wires to the chest hooked to a pager-looking device) for 10 days. Some company is looking at the results 24 hours a day and will call my doctor if they see something bad. With the medication, the rate was in the low 40's this evening. I ran 1-mile+ plus on Veterans Memorial Parkway just before dark this evening and never got a call from anyone.
Sunday, August 18, 2019
Late evening run
I had to go down to Conroe this afternoon for my grand daughter's birthday party, but ran an unplanned course in the avenues later this evening. It turned out to be 1.75 miles. Today's run marked 9 years and 10 months on my current streak.
Saturday, August 17, 2019
Watermelon Run for the Fallen 5K
I drove over to Hempstead this morning to run the Watermelon Run for the Fallen 5K. It is a un-timed "5K" to honor fallen military from Texas. After military ceremonies, everyone is required to walk 2 laps around the stadium track (total 1/2-mile). Then, if you want to, run 2.8 miles to downtown Hempstead for watermelon and more military ceremonies. Good friends, Bill and Bridget Moeller ran with me from the track to downtown. I have no idea what my time was, but I am sure it was slow.

Rain in the area
No rain at my house, but I drove through heavy rain a mile away going into town. I finished up measuring the course for our club run next month and then went out to the park and ran 2 miles on the wet park roads.
Tuesday, August 13, 2019
Back situation
Today marks three weeks since I hurt my lower back. I thought the pain would be gone by now, but it lingers. However, it seems to be improving and I will assume that it will continue to get better. Between the back and lower dosage of steroids for my RA, my running has been definitely affected. I will just have to accept the slower times. My goal is to run a few half marathons and the Texas 10 Series 10 milers this season. In the meantime, I ran 2.5 miles on the trails this evening.
Monday, August 12, 2019
Around town
After working out at Iron Works, I drove to the track and then ran an unplanned loop around the town. It turned out to be 2.2 miles.
Sunday, August 11, 2019
Course measurement
Our running club is putting on a new 5K in September and the course is in the hilly avenues. I walked most of it this afternoon with an engineer wheel to measure the distance. Afterwards, I went to the park and ran 2.1 miles on the roads.
Saturday, August 10, 2019
Run the Woodlands 5K - 1,100th race
I ran the Run the Woodlands 5K this morning and finished in 44:54. Hot and humid, as expected in August. This was my 630th 5K and my 1,100th race.
Friday, August 9, 2019
Morning laps
With a 5K in the morning, I ran laps at the track this morning. Running streak day 3,582.
Thursday, August 8, 2019
Iron Works and Trails
A regular Thursday evening. I worked out at Iron Works and then ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the park.
Wednesday, August 7, 2019
Roads
I did another light workout at Iron Works this evening and then ran 3 miles on the roads at Huntsville State Park.
Tuesday, August 6, 2019
Monday and Tuesday
I forgot to blog last night, but I ran 2 miles on the state park roads. This evening, I did a light workout at Iron Works and then ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the park. According to my truck thermometer, it was 100 degrees when I started the run. Today marks two weeks of back pain. I thought it was be gone by now. I'll see how it goes this week.
Sunday, August 4, 2019
Sunday Night 5K
For the 101st time, I ran the Sunday Night 5K in The Woodlands this evening. It was also my 1,099th race. I finished in 44:21, a few seconds slower than the same race last time and about 2 minutes faster than my 5K yesterday.
Saturday, August 3, 2019
Southern Star Brewery 5K
For the 5th straight year, I ran the Southern Star Brewery 5K in Conroe this morning. It's nice to only have to travel 30 minutes to a race. There was a light rain throughout the race, but none at my house in Huntsville. My back was still hurting and I finished in a slow 46:05. I was 5th of 6 in the 70 and over age group and I was the oldest runner of 558 finishers. My time was about 3 minutes slower than at the same race last year. The beer was good and it was great visiting with a lot of friends.
Friday, August 2, 2019
Laps
With a 5K in the morning, I went to the track this afternoon and ran laps. Still treating the lower back; it's been nearly 2 weeks since I pulled it or whatever I did to it.
Thursday, August 1, 2019
Wednesday, July 31, 2019
Back to trails
I did a light workout at Iron Works this evening and then went out to the park and ran 2 miles on the trails.
Tuesday, July 30, 2019
Wet trail run
I ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the park this evening. The last half was in a heavy rain. Of course, I got back home and not a drop here. In fact, no rain for weeks.
Monday, July 29, 2019
Avenues
Still not ready to go back to Iron Works, but I went to the track this evening and ran an unplanned route through the hilly avenues from there. It turned out to be just over 2 miles.
Sunday, July 28, 2019
Laps at the track
The hilly 5K yesterday was a bit too much on my lower back. So, I took it easy today and ran laps at the track this evening.
Saturday, July 27, 2019
Dog Days 5K, 9-9-9
I ran our club's annual Dog Days 5K at Elkins Lake here in Huntsville this morning. It is one steep hill after another. I finished in about 47 minutes, probably my slowest 5K ever. I ran every step, but two guys walking kept pace with me. I hate that. My back held up okay, but is sore this afternoon. Today's run extends my running streak to 9 years, 9 months and 9 days.
Friday, July 26, 2019
Finally getting better
I ran laps at the track this morning, a painful mile. However, this evening, my back started feeling better. My intention is to attempt a 5K in the morning.
Thursday, July 25, 2019
The back issue continues
I was hoping that the lower back pain would be gone this morning. No such luck. I met up with the group at the park this evening and slowly ran 23 minutes on the park roads.
Wednesday, July 24, 2019
Another one
The lower back was about the same today. Again, I spent much of the day on a heating pad. I went to the track this evening and ran slow and painful laps to get in a mile +.
Tuesday, July 23, 2019
Streak saving run
I woke up this morning with an extremely sore lower back. At Iron Works yesterday, I increased my weights to that before rotator cuff surgery in December. Obviously, it was too much. I spent most of today laying on a heating pad, but got up in time to meet the group at the park this evening. Although it was hard and painful getting started, I ran 21 minutes on the park roads. As I am getting close to the 10-year mark on my running streak, I keep facing more challenges.
Monday, July 22, 2019
Short trail run
I went out to the park this evening with the intent of running a couple miles on the roads. The biting horse flies have not been bad this summer and I did not use spray or wear a cap to fight them off when necessary. I got a quarter mile down the road when I started being attacked. I slipped off the road onto a trail where they continued to attack. I ended up getting in about 1.5 miles before calling it a day. Tomorrow, I will be better prepared.
Sunday, July 21, 2019
Lunar Landing 5K
I got up at 4:30 this morning and drove down to the Clear Lake area of Houston to run the Lunar Landing 5K. Lots of older runners there and I finished in 43:19 and was 5th of 5 in the 75-79 age group. As expected, it was hot and humid, but I got to visit with good friends, Loren, Traci, Pete and Larry.
Saturday, July 20, 2019
Friday, July 19, 2019
Park road run
With no race tomorrow, I went back out to the park this evening and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Thursday, July 18, 2019
Back to the trails
For the first time since June 11, I ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the state park this evening. No falls, snakes or wild pigs - just heat and humidity.
Wednesday, July 17, 2019
Yard work
I did yard work this afternoon, worked out at Iron Works and got to the park a little late. I ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Tuesday, July 16, 2019
Stitches out
I went down to the doctor's office in Conroe late this afternoon and got the other half of the stitches out of my forearm. When I got back to Huntsville, I went straight to Iron Works and then to the park. I started to run trails, but decided to give my arm a little more healing time. So, I ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Monday, July 15, 2019
Sunday, July 14, 2019
Run the Woodlands 5K
I ran the Run the Woodlands 5K yesterday and finished in 42:22. Hot and humid, but that is expected in July.
Friday, July 12, 2019
Thursday, July 11, 2019
Another 2
I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran another 2 miles on the roads. Am anxious to get the other half of the stitches out of my arm and get back on the trails.
Heat
Running in the heat is a challenge to my motivation, but I got in a 2-mile run around the campus this evening.
Tuesday, July 9, 2019
Half the stitches out
I went down to the doctor in Conroe this afternoon to set the stitches removed from the 3-inch incision on my forearm. However, he only removed every other stitch. I go back in another week to get the rest removed. Apparently, on that part of the arm it takes longer to heal. So, another week of changing the bandage twice a day. I did make it back to Huntsville in time to meet the group at the park. I ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Monday, July 8, 2019
Little sore
I was a little sore today after all the manual labor building the fence over the weekend. However, I did work out at Iron Works this evening and then run 2 miles on the roads at the state park.
Sunday, July 7, 2019
Back from Wylie
I drove up to Wylie Saturday morning to help build a fence for a family member. Lots of work in very hot weather. I took a break just before dark last night and got in a 1-mile+ run in the neighborhood. I had hoped to get back in time today to go to The Woodlands to run the Sunday Night 5K. However, we did not finish up until later this afternoon and I got back to Huntsville just before 7 tonight. I took a nap and then ran laps at the track.
Friday, July 5, 2019
Diagnosis
I had a followup appointment with the doctor this morning regarding my swollen and sore hands and body soreness. He said that my blood work came back normal and the xrays showed no damage. He still thinks I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. According to him, I am one of the one in five who have the disease, but normal blood work. So, I got a prescription for medication to control it. I discussed running and he does not think it will interfere. I guess that is to be seen. This evening, when it was 95 degrees, I ran a 2-mile loop around the empty campus.
Thursday, July 4, 2019
Stu's Country Mile 5K
I ran Stu's Country Mile 5K in Centerville this morning. This was my 25th time running this race and my 24th consecutive year. I finished in 43:36, one second faster than last year. My good friend, Dennis Alston, was not there this year. He is in my age group and always beats me. Hope he is okay. In any case, I was the only runner over 70 and got first place.
WANDA RETIRED. After Stu's, our club members always have breakfast at the Town Cafe just off the square in Centerville. We have been doing that for 24 years. There was a blonde waitress who always waited on us in the back room. A few years ago, I was going to Dallas on I-45 and decided to stop at the Town Cafe for breakfast. When I walked in, the blonde waitress asked me what I was doing there. "Its not the 4th of July." She was not there this morning and the back room was turned into a smoking area. We all had to sit at different tables in the main room. I asked the young waitress about the blonde waitress who always waited on us. She said, "the old lady?" That was Wanda and she retired. Guess, nothing stays the same. We move to new traditions. Good luck to Wanda.

Tuesday, July 2, 2019
Ankle better
As expected, my ankle was much better today. I worked out at Iron Works this evening and then drove through heavy rains to the park and ended up running 2 miles on the park roads in a light rain.
Monday, July 1, 2019
Painful mile
I woke up this morning with a sore right ankle. I have no idea where it came from, but it was hard to walk on it all day. I did manage to get in a mile at the track this afternoon. Based on my experience, pain that suddenly appears for no reason goes away just as quickly. So, I am assuming that it will be gone when I get up tomorrow. This evening, I went to College Station to visit someone at the hospital and then worked out at Iron Works late tonight.
Sunday, June 30, 2019
Sunday at the park
I went out to the park early this afternoon and ran 2 miles on the park roads. Lots of Sunday traffic, but with a 20 mph speed limit, it is still safer than in town.
Saturday, June 29, 2019
Independence Day 8K
I drove down to Houston early this morning to run the Independence Day 8K at 7:30. The temperature was in the 80's and it was very humid. Flat course, sunny and no breeze. I finished in 1:14:48 and was 2nd of 3 in the 75 and over age group. Nice finisher medal and award plaque. I was right at 2 minutes slower this year than in the same race last year.
Friday, June 28, 2019
Thursday, June 27, 2019

After Iron Works this evening, I met up with the group at the park and ran 3 miles on the roads.
Wednesday, June 26, 2019
Back to the gym
I went back to Iron Works this afternoon, but was careful not to pull the stitches in my arm. Then, went to the park and ran 2 miles on the roads.
Tuesday, June 25, 2019
More surgery
I had a doctor's appointment this afternoon in Conroe to get a spot removed from my forearm. The incision was 3 inches and took 18 stitches to close up. I made it back to Huntsville in time to meet the group at the park. I ran 2 miles on the roads.
Monday, June 24, 2019

I had visiting family today and I tried to get in a run between rain storms. Just as I started out Veterans Memorial Parkway, it started pouring down. I managed to get in 1.4 miles and got soaking wet. It was running streak day 3,535.
Saturday, June 22, 2019
Polish Pickle 5K
I ran the Polish Pickle 5K in Bremond this morning for the 24th straight year. I finished in 42:49 and was 2nd of 4 in the 75-79 age group. The first year I ran this race was 1996 and I finished in 28:10.
Friday, June 21, 2019

With a running club meeting this evening, I went out to the park ahead of the group and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Wednesday, June 19, 2019
Feeling close to normal
The steroids are working well. Felt close to normal today. I worked out at Iron Works this afternoon for the first time since last week. It was 97 degrees and humid outside, but I went to the park and ran 3 miles on the roads. It was my first time over 2 miles since June 5.
Tuesday, June 18, 2019
Starting to feel better
I finally got my new medication this afternoon and am starting to feel better tonight. The swelling and soreness in my hands has definitely gone down. I met up with the group at the park this evening and opted to run 2 miles on the park roads. All the others reported a big rattlesnake on the trail. With today's run, I completed 9 years and 8 months on my current streak.
Monday, June 17, 2019
Doctor appointment results
I ran laps this morning and then drove down to Conroe for my long awaited appointment with a specialist. He has tentatively diagnosed my problem as Rheumatoid Arthritis. However, he is doing a lot of blood testing and xrays of my hands. In the meantime is is prescribing a 30-day supply of steroids. RA is not curable, but there is medication for the long run. I go back to him on July 5.
Sunday, June 16, 2019
In between storms
I got in a run early this afternoon, between thunderstorms. Did 2 miles on Veterans Memorial Parkway.
Saturday, June 15, 2019

I got the stitches out of my back this afternoon, so I decided to run trails at the park. I ran 1.4 miles, but took a fall. Luckily, there was a tree nearby and I was able to get up. Six more days until I see the doctor.
Another short run
My symptoms are getting worse. I called my doctor's office this morning to see if they could refer me to another specialist that might get me in sooner. This evening, they gave me the name and number of a specialist in The Woodlands. I called that office, but they could not get me in until June 25. So, I might as well keep my appointment with the doctor in Conroe on June 17. I had visiting family all day today and went to the track at 9 tonight and ran laps.

Back from Wylie
My plan for Saturday was to get up at 5 a.m. to drive to Kosse to run the Greyhound 5K (for the 8th straight year) and then drive up to Plano (near Wylie) for my grand daughters first dance recital at 12:30 p.m. I am not sure what was going on, but I could not get to sleep Friday night. Still awake at 4 a.m., I decided to skip the race and leave at 9 a.m. for a direct drive to Plano. I got about 3 hours of sleep before safely making the drive. After the concert, I took a nap at my son's house in Wylie and then went for a run in his neighborhood. The normal 3-hour drive back to Huntsville took over 4 hours with extra heavy traffic. I got home at 6:30 this evening and went to the track and ran laps.
Friday, June 7, 2019
Friday laps
With a race tomorrow and the ongoing medical issue, I ran laps at the track this morning.
Thursday, June 6, 2019
Another 2 at the park
I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening. I get the stitches out of my back next Tuesday; then, back to the trails.
Wednesday, June 5, 2019
Global Running Day 5K
I went down to Fleet Feet in The Woodlands this evening to run the Global Running Day 5K. It was not timed. My GPS refused to talk to a satellite for a long time, so I never recorded my time or got the actual race distance. From what others said, the course was probably 3.4 miles. In any case, I got to visit with a lot of good friends. Also, got to meet fellow streaker, Paul Herman, who is over 7 years on his streak.
Tuesday, June 4, 2019
Just me and Glen
It was just me and Glen at the state park this evening. With stitches still in my back from surgery last Tuesday, I stayed on the park roads. 2-mile run.
Monday, June 3, 2019
Rest day
Given my body soreness and 5K's on Saturday and Sunday, I rested up today by running laps at the track this afternoon. Only 14 more days until my doctor's appointment.
Sunday, June 2, 2019
Sunday Night 5K 100
For the 100th time, I ran the Sunday Night 5K, put on by The Woodlands Running Club on the first Sunday of every month. I finished in 44:13.
Saturday, June 1, 2019
Heights 5K
With continued body soreness and swollen and sore hands, I almost stayed in bed this morning. But I got up and took Tylenol and headed for Houston to run the Heights 5K. It was hot and humid as usual. I finished in 42:55 and was 3rd of 5 in the 75-70 age group. The was my 1,090th race.
Friday, May 31, 2019
Short Friday run
With a race in the morning, I went to the track (flooded) and ran a little over a mile on the roads from there.
Thursday, May 30, 2019
Park roads
I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 2 miles on the park roads. No trails until I get the stitches out of my back.
Wednesday, May 29, 2019
Numbness wore off
The numbness from the surgery on my back wore off late last night. Not much sleep and some pain all day today. However, I managed a workout at Iron Works this afternoon and laps at the track without breaking any stitches (at least the outer layer of stitches).
Tuesday, May 28, 2019
Surgery
I had a spot surgically removed from my back this afternoon, so I ran laps at the track this morning.
Monday, May 27, 2019
Hosted Memorial Day Run
As we have done for a bunch of years, my wife and I hosted the club's annual Memorial Day 5K & 1-Mile and breakfast at my house this morning. I am not sure how many runners we had, but probably more than 100, including spectators. All went well. I was going to get up at 6 a.m., but woke up at 3:30 and never could go back to sleep. Lots of work getting everything set up. I took over 200 photos of the race and posted them on the club FB page. This evening, I ran 2 miles on the streets around the campus.
Sunday, May 26, 2019
Busy day
I host our club's annual Memorial Day 5K at my house every year. With nearly a hundred runners expected, I had a busy day preparing. My wife, too. She and others working on breakfast for all the runners. I took time this evening to go run laps at the track. Up early tomorrow.
Saturday, May 25, 2019
Stayed at home
I set my alarm to get up and go down and run the Run the Woodlands 5K. However, my body, including my hands, was too sore from what ever is ailing me. I have family coming in tomorrow and had a lot of work to do around the house. So, I took plenty of Tylenol and got it done. Late this afternoon, I took a nap and then ran 2 miles on the empty roads around the campus.
Friday, May 24, 2019
Back from Wylie
I ran laps at the track yesterday and then drove up to Wylie (190+ miles) to attend my grand daughter's high school graduation. It was also my 78th birthday. The hands and body soreness was worse today. When I got back this afternoon, I ran laps at the track again. I called the doctor and was able to move my appointment up to June 17, by agreeing to go to his Conroe office.
Wednesday, May 22, 2019
Appointment with specialist
After getting the referral from my regular doctor, I called the specialist for an appointment regarding my swollen and sore hands and general body soreness. The earliest I can get in is June 25. My God, the body may heal itself by then. I ran some errands in Conroe this morning and afternoon, but when I got back to Huntsville, I worked out at Iron Works and ran 2 miles on the streets in town.
Tuesday, May 21, 2019
Call from my doctor
My doctor called this morning to refer me to a specialist regarding my sore and swollen hands. They improved somewhat over the weekend, so I have not called for an appointment yet. I have a lot going on in the next week, so I may just wait and see. This evening, I met up with the group at the park and ran 2.5 miles on the trails.
Monday, May 20, 2019
Trip to Tyler today
I drove up to Tyler (135 miles) this morning to attend a funeral and got back this evening. I was tired and I have a bad blister on a toe (sweaty socks in the 10K on Saturday), so I ran 1.3 miles on the streets in the avenues.
Sunday, May 19, 2019
National Running Month 5K
I went down to The Woodlands this morning to run the non-competitive National Running Month 5K put on by Dick's Sporting Goods. The course was along the waterway and included steps. I finished in 43:59. Today was my 3,500th consecutive day of running. That's 9 years, 7 months and 1 day.
Saturday, May 18, 2019
Impact a Hero 10K
I got up early this morning to drive down to Sugar Land to run the Impact a Hero 10K. Hot and humid and mosquitos. I know why the minor league baseball team there is the Sugar Land Skeeters. I finished in 1:43:22 (3 of 4 in the 70 and over age group). I did not wear my GPS, but I think the course was probably long. My last 10K time several weeks ago was 1:28:56.
Friday, May 17, 2019
Laps
With a race tomorrow, I ran laps at the track this morning. Still waiting for my doctor's referral.
Thursday, May 16, 2019
Swollen and sore hands return
After completing the second round of medication, my hands are again swollen and sore. I have a call into my doctor to get a referral to a specialist. I forgot to blog last night, but I ran 1.3 miles on the roads in the avenues. This evening, I ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the park.
Tuesday, May 14, 2019
Monday, May 13, 2019
New shoes
I put on a new pair of running shoes today and did a 1.3-mile break-in run on the streets in my old neighborhood.
Sunday, May 12, 2019
Campus
Since it was Sunday, there was not much traffic around the campus. So, I ran a 2-mile loop around the campus, starting from the track.
Saturday, May 11, 2019
Run the Woodlands 5K
For the 96th time, I went down to The Woodlands this morning and ran the Run the Woodlands 5K. I finished in 41:44. This race has been held at Barbara Bush Elementary School and on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month for many years. $1 entry and very few frills. Today was special for my good friend, Vince Attanucci, who is a fellow streaker (16 years+). He ran this race for the 250th time. Congratulations, Vince.
Friday, May 10, 2019
Avenues
After the storms came though last night, it was 60 degrees this morning. I ran an unplanned course through the hilly avenues. It turned out to be 1.8 miles.
Thursday, May 9, 2019
Nearly normal
My medication is kicking in. The fever is gone and my hands are no longer sore and swollen. Still congested, but I got in 2.5 miles on the trails this evening.
Wednesday, May 8, 2019
Doctor appointment
I saw my doctor late this morning and he prescribed antibiotics for my sinus infection. However, he cannot figure out why my hands and sore and swollen. He gave me the same prescription that worked last time. He said that the issue returns after I complete the prescription, he is referring me to a specialist. I expect that to be the case. Still felt lousy this afternoon, so I ran a little over a mile in my old neighborhood.
Tuesday, May 7, 2019
Fever
I woke up last night with a fever and it hung around all day and my hands are sore and swollen. I doubt that the fever and hand issue are related.. Right now, my temperature is over 100. I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I went to the park this evening a ran a little over 1 mile on the trails - in the rain.
Monday, May 6, 2019
Sore and swollen hands returning
Now that I am off the pills the doctor prescribed a week ago, the swelling and soreness in my hands is returning. It is probably not related, but my sinuses are really messed up, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, headache. I did work out at Iron Works this afternoon and ran an unplanned loop in the avenues. It turned out to be 1.7 miles.
Sunday Night 5K
I forgot to post last night, but I drove down to The Woodlands last night and ran the Sunday Night 5K, put on by The Woodlands Running Club. I finished in 41:55.
Saturday, May 4, 2019
Chuck Norris 5K
My niece, Amie, came up from Houston yesterday and we drove over to College Station this morning to run the Chuck Norris 5K. This was the first year for the race and I am not sure if it was a one-time race. Amazing - 5,000 runners from 48 states and 7 countries for a 5K. The race was non-competitive and un-timed. According to my watch, I finished in 43:10. Chuck Norris was in the finish chute and gave everyone a high five. I bet his hands are sore tonight.
Friday, May 3, 2019
The doc called
I received a call from my doctor's office this morning regarding my lab tests. Everything was normal except for one test that indicated inflammation. However, they could not determine the cause of the inflammation. My hands were swollen and sore and that has cleared up with the medication he prescribed. I took the last pill today. They said if the soreness returns, I need to see the doctor again. In the meantime, I feel good. With a 5K tomorrow, I did a normal Friday short run. Went to my old neighborhood and ran a 1.1-mile loop.
Thursday, May 2, 2019
Beat the storm
We had a storm come through this evening after I got home from running 2.5 miles on the trails at the park.
Wednesday, May 1, 2019
Still no call from the doc
I still have not received a call from my doc about the blood tests, but the swelling and pain in my hands has pretty much gone away. The pills he prescribed are working well. I ran 2 miles on the roads at the park this evening. It is May 1 and the biting horse flies are out. I think they have a little calendar nailed to a tree somewhere. Every year, they are out for three months, starting May 1.
Tuesday, April 30, 2019
Pills worked
The swelling and soreness in my hands was much better today. The pills worked. However, I am still waiting for a call from the doc to get the lab results. In the meantime, I ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the park this evening.
Monday, April 29, 2019
Doctor appointment this morning
My soreness of the last three weeks never went away. Particularly, my hands have been swollen and sore. I had an appointment with my doc this morning. He does not know what is going on, but ordered blood tests and gave me pills to reduce the pain and swelling. I made it out to the park this evening and ran 2 miles on the park roads. Later tonight, I worked out at Iron Works.
Sunday, April 28, 2019
Spring Fling 5K
Yesterday, I ran the Spring Fling 5K here in Huntsville. The course in the Elkins Lake Sub-division is like a roller coaster. I finished in 45 something, about 2 minutes slower than the last race on this course. Then, I drove up to Tyler yesterday afternoon to my 60th high school reunion. Enjoyed visiting with old friends. Must have been close to 100 there, plus the spouses. I drove back to Huntsville this afternoon and then ran an short unplanned course in the avenues. It turned out to be 1.4 miles.

Lots of rain today
It rained much of the day, but I managed to get in 2 dry miles on the park roads this evening.
Tuesday, April 23, 2019
Just me and Jacob
It was just me and Jacob at the park for the group run this evening. I ran 2.5 miles on the trails and Jacob 3 miles and he was waiting for me at the finish. In fact, he probably waited a long time.
Monday, April 22, 2019
Back to the park
After Iron Works this afternoon, I ran 2 miles on the trails at Huntsville State Park.
Sunday, April 21, 2019

Saturday, April 20, 2019
Yuri's 10K
I got up at 4:30 this morning and drove to Houston to run Yuri's 10K near NASA. Really nice weather; sunny with the temperature in the 50's and 60's. I finished in 1:28:56 (first place of one in the 75-49 age group). After the race, I got to visit with good friends, Loren, Pete, Traci and Robert.

Thursday, April 18, 2019
9.5 Years
I ran 2 miles on the roads at the park this evening. Today marked exactly 9.5 years (3,470 days) on my current running streak. The soreness continued today, especially in both hands; sore and swollen. Then, it dawned on me. A few days ago, they switched my blood pressure medicine from a capsule to a tiny tablet. It is suppose to be the same stuff, just in a different form. I talked to the pharmacist about the soreness today. He said that it could be caused by something in the tablet and switched me back to the capsule form and gave me a whole new supply. We will see.
Wednesday, April 17, 2019
Continued
I still felt sore all over today and felt like I had a fever, but I did yard work anyway and ran 2 miles on the park roads later this afternoon.
Sore today
I felt sore all over today. Not sure why; probably from doing my taxes yesterday. Anyway, I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening.
Monday, April 15, 2019
Post tax run
I worked on my income taxes much of the day. I finished this afternoon and made it to the post office well before 5 p.m. Then, I worked out at Iron Works and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Sunday, April 14, 2019

It was sunny and cool today after the heavy storms through Texas yesterday. I went to the park this afternoon and ran 3.5 miles on the trails.
Saturday, April 13, 2019
Run The Woodlands 5K
With a cancelled half marathon up in Frisco, I went down to The Woodlands this morning and ran the Run the Woodlands 5K. It was hot and humid and I felt sluggish. My time of 43:08 reflected that. Last Sunday, I ran this course in 40:38.
Friday, April 12, 2019
Race cancelled
I ran laps at the track late this morning and then got ready to drive up to Frisco for the Big Star Half Marathon tomorrow. The weather forecast continued to predict thunderstorms for the race. I emailed the race and told them that I was leaving at 2 p.m. to drive up. They had the courtesy to email me back at 2 to give me advance notice that they were cancelling the race. Bad news, but I was not looking forward to running in the lightning. I then thought about running the Blue Bell in Brenham, but it looks like it will be storming there too. So, I plan to run the Run The Woodlands 5K if the weather is not too bad there.
Thursday, April 11, 2019
Uncertain about the weekend
I am signed up for the Big Star Half Marathon in Frisco (north of Dallas) on Saturday, but for the last 4 days the forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of thunderstorms. Hopefully, they will make a go/no go decision tomorrow before I drive up there. In the meantime, I ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the park this evening.
Wednesday, April 10, 2019
91
My truck thermometer showed 91 degrees when I went to the park to run this evening. Yet, the forecast shows cooler weather ahead. I ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Tuesday, April 9, 2019
Bees
I mowed my yard this afternoon and thought about all the bees that I had run over. Then, my son, who is a deputy sheriff in Arizona, called me this evening to tell me about a call he responded to Sunday evening. A guy trying to remove a hive of bees from his backyard got stung about 200 times. The fire department sprayed the guy with foam, while my son and another deputy removed him to an awaiting ambulance. They were killer bees and the guy died at the hospital. My son and the other deputy were stung several times, but they are okay. I keep wondering about the bees that I encounter when I mow my yard, especially since I live in south Texas. Anyway, I ran 2.5 miles on the trails at Huntsville State Park this evening and only encountered a bunch of squirrels and spider webs across the trails.
Monday, April 8, 2019
Sluggish 3 Miles
After a lot of rain yesterday and high temperatures today, I felt sluggish running 3 miles on the park roads this evening.

Friday, April 5, 2019
Run the Ramps 5K
I ran the Run the Ramps at Kyle Field in College Station tonight. This is the 11th time I have run this race since 1997. It use to be called the Ramp Romp. Now, the third different organization at Texas A&M is putting on the race. They used a different course than last year and this is the first year that it has been a night run. Three trips up and down the ramps and three trips around the top of the stadium. Nice finisher medal and hamburgers after the race. I finished in 44:48. No awards.
Thursday, April 4, 2019
Hot
It was about 80 degrees when we ran trails this evening. A few days ago, it was down to about 39. I ran 2.5 miles on the trails at the park this evening and even broke a few spider webs.
Wednesday, April 3, 2019
Tuesday, April 2, 2019
Just Glen and me
Glen and I were the only ones who showed up for the Tuesday group run at the park this evening. I ran 2.5 miles on the trails. All the fires are out from the controlled burn last week, but it sure smells different.
Monday, April 1, 2019
Back to the park
After working out at Iron Works this afternoon, I went to the park and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Sunday, March 31, 2019
Texas 10 Series Huntsville
I ran the Texas 10 Series Huntsville 10-miler this morning. It started a 7 a.m. on the university campus and consisted of two 5-miles loops around the campus. It is the hilliest race around. Nothing but up and down. The temperature during the race stayed in the 40's with a fairly strong wind. I finished in 2:27:18. and was 4th of 4 in the 70 and over age group. This is far from my best time in the Texas 10 Series, but it was about 5 minutes faster than this same race last year. Due to my surgery and all the hip problems, this was my first run over 5 miles in a couple months. However, I felt strong throughout the race. This gives me confidence for a half marathon in a couple weeks.
Saturday, March 30, 2019
Muster 5K
I ran the Muster 5K here in Huntsville this morning. It was held in conjunction with an annual celebration at the Veteran's Museum to honor the military, first responders and correctional officers. I finished in 43:15 and was third in the 60 and over age group.

While the controlled burn was completed at the park, there were still smoldering dead trees and plenty of smoke. I ran 2.5 miles on the trails, with scorched earth the entire way.
Wednesday, March 27, 2019
Another smoky run
I ran out of time this evening and cut my run to 2 miles on the smoky roads at Huntsville State Park. The trails are suppose to reopen tomorrow.
Tuesday, March 26, 2019
Smoky Park
They had a controlled burn at Huntsville State Park today and all the trails were closed. The group met up anyway, but we ran the smoky roads. I did 2.2 miles.

Just realized that is after midnight and I have not posted. In any case, I went to the park this evening and ran 3 miles on the park roads.
Sunday, March 24, 2019
Tyler Azalea 10K
I ran laps at the track Friday morning and drove up to Tyler (135 miles) to run the Tyler Azalea 10K Saturday morning. I have run this race several times over the years, but it was under new management this year. Everything about the race was good this year, except that someone removed turn signs on the course (5K and 10K) and everything got screwed up on the course. I was running with a girl I met on the course and we and others were stopped at over 2 miles and we told to run back the same way. According to her GPS, we ran 4.4 miles total. Runners at the finish line reported running different distances. They cancelled the awards ceremony and the race director told me that they would give discounts for next year. My official finish time was 1:03:07. After the race, I met and visited with two guys, who were brothers of football great, Earl Campbell. Neither ran the race. Saturday afternoon, I took two grandkids to the Tyler Zoo, so I am sure I made up the mileage I missed in the 10K. I drove back to Huntsville late this morning and got back in time for our club's annual Run the Trails at Huntsville State Park at 2 p.m. Before the race, I ran 1.3 miles on the trails and then drove down to another trail head and ran (with my good camera) about 3/4th of a mile to a spot on the course to direct runners and take photos. Busy weekend.

I got back to Huntsville this afternoon and went to Huntsville State Park and ran 5 miles on the trails.

Third and final shot
I went out to the park this morning and ran 2 miles on the roads, except for the last .2 miles on the trails. First time on the trails in a long time. Sam Houston 5K
I ran the Sam Houston 5K this morning in Huntsville. This was a new race on the SHSU campus. They got started late and the course was short. Someone said it was 2.8 miles. In any case, it was a very hilly course. I finished in 35:20. I was the only one over 70, so I was first in my age group. After the race, I drove down to The Woodlands and took my niece to a birthday lunch on The Woodlands waterway. Ran into a few friends who just finished the marathon and half marathon and watch a few late marathon finishers coming in to the finish line.
Friday, March 1, 2019
Early run
I had to run some errands with my wife in Conroe and The Woodlands today, so I did a short run before I left this morning. Got in 1.3 miles on the roads from the track.
Thursday, February 28, 2019
Dreary weather
I am not sure it was the dreary cold and wet weather all today, but I felt like I was coming down with something all day. I did work out at Iron Works this evening and then run 2 miles on the park roads. it was 41 degrees and very damp.
Wednesday, February 27, 2019
Gave up on the half marathon this Saturday
I am signed up to run The Woodlands Half Marathon this Saturday. Just not ready. Between the shoulder surgery, hip issues and sinus infections, I am too far behind in my training. My goal now is to run the Big Star Half Marathon in Frisco on April 13. My weight is down 21 pounds from this time last year, but it is not resulting in speed or endurance. Three miles on the park roads this evening.

Rainy run
Jacob and I were the only ones who showed up at the park this evening. It was raining and there was nearby lightning. I opted for a 1.2-mile run on the park roads.

Sunday and Monday
I had visiting family yesterday (Sunday) and got to the park late for a run. Did 2 miles on the park roads. Today, I ran 3 miles on the park roads.

Sweetheart 5K
I ran our club's annual Sweetheart 5K in Huntsville this morning. Nothing but hills. I finished in 45:54.
Friday, February 22, 2019
And another 3
I ran the same 3-mile course on the park roads this morning. However, I tried to increase my speed. I knocked off 2 minutes off of yesterday's run.

Another 3
I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran another 3 miles on the park roads. I am tempted to get back on the trails, but I suppose I need to build up strength in my shoulders first. I would hate to fall and tear the rotator cuff again.

Three comfortable miles
With the hip feeling much better after the cortisone shot yesterday, I went to the park this evening and ran 3 comfortable miles on the park roads. I still have thoughts about running The Woodlands Half Marathon (which I am signed up for) on March 2, but I need to get in a couple long runs to test my body for 13.1.

Morning run at the track
Since I was getting my second cortisone shot after lunch, I went to the track and ran laps this morning is a misty rain. While visiting with the doctor, he checked my shoulder and cleared me to start exercising. No more therapy. He scheduled me for my 3rd and final shot on March 6.

Shot number 2 tomorrow
I have an appointment to get my second cortisone shot in my hip tomorrow afternoon. Hope it is the last and I can get back to "normal running and racing." In the meantime, I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening.

Back from Yuma
Last Saturday (Feb. 10), I went out to Yuma, AZ (southwest corner of the state) to visit family and got home at 1 a.m. this morning. I did manage to get in a run everyday while gone. On most days, I went to the gym downtown with my son and ran from there. Other days, I ran in his neighborhood. Perfect running weather; 50's and 60's and very low humidity. The only problem was my hip. I was never able to get much over 2 miles. I went out to Huntsville State Park this afternoon and ran 2 miles on the park roads.

Need shot number two
The pain in my hip has returned for the last couple of days. However, I am scheduled for cortisone shot number two on February 19. I am signed up for The Woodlands Half Marathon on March 2. It will be tough getting my distance up. In the meantime, I ran 2 miles on the park roads this afternoon. Rocky Raccoon 50M, 50K and 13.1 was in progress on the trails while I was there. After my run, I had a nice visit with Bill, Leanne and others who were there in support of friends running.

3,400
I reached a minor milestone today; completed 3,400 consecutive days of running. I ran 2 miles on the park roads this evening - in the cold (34 degrees). Well, that's cold for Texas, anyway.
Thursday, February 7, 2019
Cooler
After a few days of warmer temperatures, it rained this morning and got down in the 40's this evening. My truck thermometer showed 81 yesterday. In any case, after Iron Works, I met up with the group at the park and ran 2 miles on the park roads.

Appointments today
I had my first post-sling rehab appointment this morning. Lot more to go. This afternoon, I had an appointment with the skin doctor in Conroe. I get checked every three months. This evening, I put on a new pair of running shoes and ran 2 miles on the park roads to break them in.

Catching up on yard work
Now that I am somewhat recovered, I started catching up on yard work today. This afternoon, I worked out at Iron Works and then ran 3 miles on the park roads.
Monday, February 4, 2019
More time at Iron Works
While recovering from rotator cuff surgery, I continued to work out at Iron Works. However, no upper body stuff. I start physical therapy this Wednesday to get my range of motion and strength back. So, I spent more time there this afternoon working on upper body strength. I was careful not to break anything. Then, I went to the park and ran 2 miles on the park roads.

Sunday Night 5K
I went down to The Woodlands this evening to run the Sunday Night 5K. I was pain-free for the entire race, but weak. I finished in 44:50, probably my slowest ever for this course. I obviously need to start working on my distance after missing so many long races this season.

Not sure what went on
My fever went back to normal overnight, but the runs continued until noon today. Not much sleep last night. Late this morning, I was able to go to the track and get in a 1-mile run. Was finally able to get some food down at lunch and then went down the the 11 Below Brewery in Houston for the Annual Texas 10 Series Awards Party. I got first place in the Armadillo Cup age 70 & over age group. That came with a nice mug and a check for $175. Also got a pullover for completing the 10-miler in all seven of the races in 2018. So far, no fever tonight. Just not sure what brought it on last night.

Just when I thought
Felt great this morning and went to the park and had a very comfortable 3-mile road run. Stopped just past the 1-mile point and had a nice visit with my friend, Chris McWatters, who owns Tejas Trails and directs the Rocky Raccoon 100, which will be this weekend at the park. Then, this afternoon, I started to get "the runs" and feeling nausiated. Even though I am taking antibiotics for the sinus infection, my temperature has been over 100 tonight. My nurse advises me to go to the emergency room if my temperature continues tomorrow morning.

Turned the corner
Today was the last day of wearing the sling after rotator cuff surgery on Dec. 20. So, I will be able to start more rehab for my right arm and will be able to sleep in my bed for the first time since surgery. However, I must say, however, that I was starting to get use to the recliner. My sinus infection is now under control with antibiotics and no more head and ear aches. When I woke up this morning, the pain and soreness in my hip was mostly gone, thanks to the cortisone shot yesterday. I can now sit down and get out of a chair without pain and instability. I can now even put on my own socks and shoe (my wife is really thankful for that). I met up with the group at the park this evening and ran 2 miles on the park roads. The lack of pain and stiffness really made me realize what I have been putting up with for the last month. Thankful that I was able to keep my streak going.

Working on the other issue
While I do not normally run in the morning, I went to the track this morning and ran laps. My appointment with the Orthopedic Surgeon was at 1:30 this afternoon. After looking at the xrays and examining my hip, he said that there was nothing wrong with my hips, except inflammation. He gave me the first of up to three cortisone shots. That was a relief. It doesn't seem much better tonight, but I will give it time.

One issue resolved
I went to the doctor (actually saw the PA) this morning concerning my sinus issues. She prescribed several things, including an antibiotic. Already feel better this evening. Tomorrow, I see the orthopedic surgeon regarding the hip. Hopefully, just a cortisone shot will resolve it and allow me to get back to longer running distances. Jacob and I were the only ones at the park tonight. I ran 1-mile on the park roads.
Monday, January 28, 2019
Doctor appointments scheduled
I set up an appointment with my regular doctor tomorrow morning to get my sinus problem fixed. No fever for a couple of days, but head and ear aches. Then, Wednesday afternoon, I have an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon on the hip issue. I am getting to be a regular at his office lately. In the meantime, I ran laps at the track this afternoon. Three more days in the sling!

No race this morning
I had head and ear aches all night last night. I got up at 4:30 this morning anyway to go to run the 5-miler in College Station. When I realized that the hip was worse, I decided to go back to bed.
Saturday, January 26, 2019
In the recliner most of the day
I had planned to go to our club run this morning, but my hip was so sore this morning, it was very difficult to get up and move around. I stayed in the recliner until 2 this afternoon. Took sinus medication and Ibuprofen and later in the afternoon, went to the track and ran laps. No temperature today and feel better this evening and plan to run a 5-miler tomorrow.
Friday, January 25, 2019
Darn fever back
I am not sure why, but I started running a temperature today. Tried to rest most of the day, but I did go over to the track this afternoon and run laps.
Thursday, January 24, 2019
Hip issue continues
My shoulder is doing fine, but my sore left hip continues to be a nuisance. I ran another 2 miles on the park roads this evening. Tonight, I switched from the 10 to the 5-miler at the Texas 10 Series race on Sunday.
Wednesday, January 23, 2019
Two more at the park
My hip is still sore, but seemed to be a little bit better today. I ran another 2 miles on the park roads this evening. I am signed up for the Texas 10 Series 10-miler in College Station on Sunday. I am considering switching to the 5-mile race.

Felt like I was coming down with something
I felt like I was coming down with something today. I took my temperature several times, but it was normal. I went out to the park this evening to meet up with the group, with the intention of running one mile. I kept going and ended up with two on the park roads, without the sling. I'm still required to wear it through the end of this month, but the doctor said that it was okay to run without it, as long as I kept my my arm down.
Monday, January 21, 2019
Better
My left hip was somewhat better today, so I upped my distance to 2 miles on the park roads this evening. Applying more heat tonight.
Sunday, January 20, 2019
Back from Tyler
Yesterday (Saturday), I got up early and ran 1+ miles on Veterans Memorial Parkway before driving up to Tyler for a family get-together. The left hip is very sore and it is difficult to get around, I ran laps at the track this evening after getting back from Tyler and treat the hip twice with a heating pad.
Friday, January 18, 2019
Short run, again
My hip and legs were really sore this morning. I stayed on the recliner until noon. Later this afternoon, I went out to the park and ran 1.2 miles on the roads - in a light rain.
Thursday, January 17, 2019
Left hip really sore
Am not sure why, but my left hip was really sore today. At shoulder rehab today, I tried to get them to divert treatment to my hip, but of course they would not. I managed to get in a 1.2-mile road run at the park this evening, before attending the annual running club dinner.
Wednesday, January 16, 2019
Track run
For some reason, my left hip was very sore today. So, I went to the track this afternoon and ran laps - in a light rain.
Tuesday, January 15, 2019
Appointment with my Orthopedic Surgeon
I had a followup appointment with my orthopedic surgeon this afternoon. The right should seems to be healing fine, but I will be in rehab for a while and the sling until the end of this month. I am more concerned about the left shoulder. If the pain returns after the cortisone wears off continues, it may need to be fixed too. I went from the doctor's office to the park and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Monday, January 14, 2019
A little sore
I was a little sore from running the 5-miler yesterday. It convinced me that I should probably not attempt the 3M Half Marathon in Austin (which I am signed up for) next Sunday. The sling is really making me slower that slow. Anyway, I went out to the park this evening and ran 2 miles on the park roads.

Texas 10 Series Bridgeland 5-Miler
I have been running the Texas 10 Series since 2012. However, today was the first time I ran the 5-mile event. My goal was not to fall and pull any stitches from my shoulder. I accomplished that goal and finished in a slow 1:17:20. There were three runners in the 70 and over age group and I was third.
Saturday, January 12, 2019
Ready for tomorrow
Tomorrow's 5-mile race will be my longest run in a month. Looking forward to seeing how I hold up. This morning, I ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Friday, January 11, 2019
3 more at the park
This afternoon, I ran 3 miles on the park roads. I am starting to feel more comfortable and secure running with my big bulky sling.
Thursday, January 10, 2019
Slept well
I slept well in my new recliner last night. Woke up at 8:30 this morning. Ran 2 miles on the roads at the park this evening.
Wednesday, January 9, 2019
New lift chair arrived
I bought a new lift recliner chair online and it arrived today. That's my new sleeping place. Very comfortable. After a short workout at Iron Works this afternoon, I ran 3 miles on the roads at the park. I plan to run a 5-mile race on Sunday and get back up to 10 miles by the end of this month.

Left shoulder diagnosis
My left shoulder has been hurting since the surgery on my right shoulder. Had an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon this afternoon. After looking at the xrays, he thought that it was also a torn rotator cuff. I had surgery on that shoulder in 1995 and he thinks part of it came loose. Maybe to put off a fix until later, he gave me a cortisone shot. Obviously, it feels better tonight and maybe I can get some better sleep. Later this afternoon, I worked out at Iron Works and then ran 2 miles on the roads at the park.
Monday, January 7, 2019
Three at the park
I worked out on a couple leg machines at Iron Works this afternoon and then ran 3 miles on the park roads.
Sunday, January 6, 2019
Two at the park
Between football games, I went to the park this afternoon and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Saturday, January 5, 2019
Felt better
I think I slept in three different places last night, but with sunny weather and the temperature in the 60's, I felt better today. With football this afternoon and this evening, I went to the park late this morning and ran 3 miles on the park roads. My next race is a week from tomorrow, the Texas 10 Series in Cypress. However, I switched my entry from the 10-miler to the 5-miler.

Taking it easy on the left shoulder
Hopefully, my left shoulder is just sore from overuse. So, I tried to take it easy today. I did a quick lower body workout at Iron Works this afternoon and ran 2 miles on the park roads.
Third rehab appointment
I had my third rehab appointment on my right shoulder today and make an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon next Tuesday to look at my left shoulder. Hopefully, the left shoulder is just sore from overuse. This afternoon, I went to Iron Works and worked on a couple of leg machines. Then, I met up with the group (just me and Jacob) and ran 1.2 miles on the park roads.
Wednesday, January 2, 2019
Hard to get up
Now, my left shoulder is sore. I am not sure it is from overuse trying to get out of a chair or bed or I have torn a left shoulder rotator cuff. Really frustrating, with my right shoulder in a sling day and night. I slept on the couch last night and it took me forever to get up this morning. It was raining all day and I never left the house until nearly 9 p.m. tonight. Went to Iron Works and ran the 360-foot track (14.66 laps = 1-mile) inside the building. I kept losing track of my laps, but it was around 20 laps.

Resolution 5K
For the past 11 years, I have run the Texas Marathon or Half Marathon in Kingwood. I broke that race streak today. Instead, I ran our club's Resolution 5K here in Huntsville. My goal was to run the hilly course (mostly on sidewalks) without tripping and tearing out my stitches. I accomplished that, even though I ran the entire distance very slowly. I finished in 54:42, a new Personal Worst.
